@Beckicat07 Thanks Becki - you're so right. I love Bruce, and Patti did a good job with it, but Natalie takes it hands down, and Michael is fabulous as well.
Every cover song michael stipe sings i can never fault! His voice is out of this world. What ever he sings and who ever with he brings a touch of magic to the music
I am a huge fan of both Springsteen & REM, but Michael Stipe has to be one of the most unlikely rock gods ever. Stipe is so different, but it's his peculiarities that make him so good.
Great collaboration between The Boss and Patti Smith on this tune. Love this performance (Bruce, the band), but can take or leave Michael Stipe. Springsteen's solo is filled with muscle, sweat, and passion - truly amazing. Have seen Springsteen live, as far back as '77, and his shows compare to no others. Fantastic.
Thanks for posting this great Bruce Springsteen classic. The sheet music for Roy Bittan's wonderful piano part on "Because the Night" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.
Freaking killer solo 3:30 to 4:50 - wonder why the Boss is not among top 10 guitarists of all time!! Guess Duane Allman, Stevie Ray, Slash and Hendrix are even better...
@xmassan20906 I agree wholeheartedly. I must have seen the Fallon episode 10 times... both songs were so beautifully executed - unlike the artificial sounds we see today (think Superbowl half time show).
@shantanudas Because although Bruce is great guitarist, and played lead in his first bands, before he had written or even sang a word, and still plays most of the solos in the E-Street Band, lot's of people play as well. Few, if anyone, writes at his level, and *NO ONE*, IMO, has put it all together and maintained his level of excellence over the last 40 years: writing songs, in the studio, and performing.
He plays at the level and complexity needed, but it's a given, just one more talent.
@CPSJSMSUUMUGA Agree buddy... few people these days perform like the old school performers - who play, sing, dance around, and put their heart and soul into each and every performance. Nowadays, its more about props, a lot of support, flashy no doubt but when it comes to the core performance, they don't mind using an autotone or recording now and then.

Stipe probably only agreed to do this song because he's buddies with Patti Smith who had her only hit with this cover of Bruce 's song. Watch how he controls and makes sure Bruce can only sing on cetain parts.
Yeah, Patti's verson is really good, but who could possibly compete with Bruce on this song, with Van Zant and Clarence rounding out his song and his greatness in putting his heart out there. Kinda like on "Thunder Road", but in a different way.
And I'm not even a 'Bruce-a-maniac", but what he does well, he does the best. And whenever I hear's Patti's version on the radio, I think "Bruce's is better".

@JohnLennon100 whats sad is that normally the solo in 'because the night' goes to nils lofgren, who is among the best rock guitarists in the world and REALLY does it justice. dont know why bruce decided to take it himself that time, but ive always felt he underutilizes lofgren
This is not true ,since 1978 Bruce started performing this song and he played extended 7 minutes or more guitar solos and Bruce played it great.this version is maybe the sloppiest i ever heard him play, look for other version ,especially from 1978
I didn't know that springsteen was the author. thanks for your comment. but i don't like this singer(Michael Stipe... who is?). It would be interesting if springsteen sang the song.
I like Patti Smith's version better. Plus, Bruce Springteen didn't write it on his own as some people have said, they both co-wrote it. I heard Springteen wrote the original lyrics, but Patti rewrote them from a female pespective.
Anyway, the song is awesome, and both Patti and Bruce are the best at singing it, I don't know why people keep comparing them all the time.
Bingo. Bruce wrote it, Patti Smith's version for some odd reason has received more play (at least on my local stations). In my opinion, Smith's version is absolutely terrible when compared to some of the live versions Springsteen and the E Street Band have cranked out. This version isn't my favorite, but if you dig back through various Springsteen live performances it's evident (at least to me) that he wipes his ass with Smith's version.
I got to see the first VFC show in Philly in the pit. My 2 fav. artists are REM & Bruce - this was hands down, the great show I've ever seen!! And B/C the Night w/Stipe on lead was the greatest song I'll ever see at a concert!
Looking for a particular awesome version of this song, recorded in the late 70's. It has a ca. 1.30 minute long piano intro. It has been on youtube, but now its gone.:-( Anyone know where to find it, or where its recorded???
WOW!!! If you ever want to show somebody the power of rock music, this is exhibit A. Two outstanding performers, an incredible band, and a rock song for the ages. A million thanks for posting this.
It's Michael singing his idol (Patti Smith)'s song with one of the great performers of our time. What a treat. Patti's album 'Horses' is what made Stipe become a singer in the first place. He also did a whole book of photos following her on tour called "Two Times Intro". So lots of love in that performance.
When i first watched this video, i thought that stipe was completely outclassed. However, i have to agree with PM78 after watching it about 10 times. He does a good job, maybe needs to work on the dancing haha
My apologies...I got my facts mixed up. I can't believe I did that. Normally I'm on top of things. I suppose sometimes things get mixed around in my head.
This is sort of the 10,000 Maniacs version. Stipe is definitely singing that set of lyrics; Springsteen is singing a mixture of that set and the original lyrics.
