  • I favorited this video forever ago and it's still amazing!!!

  • Well, it don't get no better then that.

  • family guy brought me here....

  • hihi i'm a lady who loves to have fun

  • Love the harmonizing between Bruce and Nils @ 2:50

  • cool like romantic nights

  • Your love is hear & now the vicious circle turns & burns, without you though, I can not live, forgive me now, the time has come to take this moment and take me now, take me now take me now.

  • "Take me now baby, here as I am."

  • RIP Clarence :'(

  • I know Bruce wrote it & Patti made it famous but Michael Stipe & Natalie Merchant both do much better singing it.

  • @Beckicat07 Thanks Becki - you're so right. I love Bruce, and Patti did a good job with it, but Natalie takes it hands down, and Michael is fabulous as well.

  • I saw them do this in Philly. It was a transcendent moment.

  • Michael Stipe definitely gets into it. His little dances he does shows it.

  • Every cover song michael stipe sings i can never fault! His voice is out of this world. What ever he sings and who ever with he brings a touch of magic to the music

    A music genius!

  • He's no Joe Satriani, but he sure plays with passion.

  • Great Job by Clarence Clemons. R.I.P.

  • WOW What else is there to say.

  • Madonna che live!

  • Volume 100

  • oh my god... the two best voices togeather... I'm really impresst... this is amazing... awesome...fantastic

  • CASCADA

  • Amazing. Simply amazing.

  • 44 people are afraid of the dark

  • OMFG! this is amazing! I was never a huge fan of this song... Until this performance. there an amazing duo...

Hopefully this time round we'll get a repeat performance.

  • I am a huge fan of both Springsteen & REM, but Michael Stipe has to be one of the most unlikely rock gods ever. Stipe is so different, but it's his peculiarities that make him so good.

  • I prefer the natalie merchant/ 10,000 maniac cover, but this one is good, too.

  • Great collaboration between The Boss and Patti Smith on this tune. Love this performance (Bruce, the band), but can take or leave Michael Stipe. Springsteen's solo is filled with muscle, sweat, and passion - truly amazing. Have seen Springsteen live, as far back as '77, and his shows compare to no others. Fantastic.

  • that is classic stipe dance

  • Thanks for posting this great Bruce Springsteen classic. The sheet music for Roy Bittan's wonderful piano part on "Because the Night" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.

  • Beautiful, classy, wonderful. I love these guys.

  • Michael Stipe just earned back some cool points.

  • CAPOLAVORO

  • Freaking killer solo 3:30 to 4:50 - wonder why the Boss is not among top 10 guitarists of all time!! Guess Duane Allman, Stevie Ray, Slash and Hendrix are even better...

  • @shantanudas See the version of this on the Jimmy Fallon show? Some guys might be great at making a guitar talk but Bruce can flat out rock.

  • @xmassan20906 I agree wholeheartedly. I must have seen the Fallon episode 10 times... both songs were so beautifully executed - unlike the artificial sounds we see today (think Superbowl half time show).

  • @shantanudas Because although Bruce is great guitarist, and played lead in his first bands, before he had written or even sang a word, and still plays most of the solos in the E-Street Band, lot's of people play as well. Few, if anyone, writes at his level, and *NO ONE*, IMO, has put it all together and maintained his level of excellence over the last 40 years: writing songs, in the studio, and performing.

He plays at the level and complexity needed, but it's a given, just one more talent.

  • @CPSJSMSUUMUGA Agree buddy... few people these days perform like the old school performers - who play, sing, dance around, and put their heart and soul into each and every performance. Nowadays, its more about props, a lot of support, flashy no doubt but when it comes to the core performance, they don't mind using an autotone or recording now and then.

  • Two phenomenal singer/songwriters.

  • Yo Weirdcritter.....great vid mate....thanks for posting

  • Awesome!!

  • great tune and performance !

  • best duet ever!!!!! Stipe my fave and bruce top 3

  • Very powerful performance...... but although I like this version, not as good as the performance by The Boss on Jimmy Fallon.

  • I love this song.

Natalie Merchant was my favourite performer of it until I heard this version...

Fantastic! Wish I'd been there to see it !!

  • Gone to heaven - my two favourite men .... gorgeous. Would do anything to catch either of their eye!

  • goosepimples from head to toe.outstanding!

  • Stipe's ecstatic dancing is great, then Bruce brings it al back home from 3:55.

  • Yeah, Patti's verson is really good, but who could possibly compete with Bruce on this song, with Van Zant and Clarence rounding out his song and his greatness in putting his heart out there. Kinda like on "Thunder Road", but in a different way.

And I'm not even a 'Bruce-a-maniac", but what he does well, he does the best. And whenever I hear's Patti's version on the radio, I think "Bruce's is better".

  • Stipe and Merchant was the bomb

  • Why dont people understand that the performance is not a competition. They both respect each other.

  • i love this dueo they are great i love rem and bruce

  • Gorgeous. Together, they are amazing.

  • Michael Stipe is a damn great singer! I love his voice and his performances.. my favourite-singer of all time. ;-)

    Keep on singing, Michael!!! :-D

  • sry, folks, but i prefer Stipes voice over Springsreens.

but nevertheless: they´re both great !

  • @1:50 Check the moves. Michael Stipe is now my favorite person alive. What a cool cat.

  • wonderful!!!

  • i love the dance style ^^

  • Horrible solo ... I prefer 10000 maniacs ...by far ...

  • @JohnLennon100 Yeah, but it sounds like Neil Young... Bruce must have wanted a change of sound there.

  • @Mahesh991000 A change cartainly for the worse ....This guy is not a lead guitarist ...period

  • @JohnLennon100 whats sad is that normally the solo in 'because the night' goes to nils lofgren, who is among the best rock guitarists in the world and REALLY does it justice. dont know why bruce decided to take it himself that time, but ive always felt he underutilizes lofgren

  • @chopsie01 Yes it's sad ....

  • This is not true ,since 1978 Bruce started performing this song and he played extended 7 minutes or more guitar solos and Bruce played it great.this version is maybe the sloppiest i ever heard him play, look for other version ,especially from 1978

  • Not true, this version is sloppy, but Bruce is a great guitar player.check his 1978 versions of this song,he nails it

  • You are right. Good call.

  • .....OOOOOOoooooooh are you sweating tooooo...????!!!!!

  • WOW! Amazing!

  • Michael is the lead singer of R.E.M

  • he is amazing...

  • amazing duet amazing

  • two of the greatest performers together to give the best duo performance of all time

  • me encanta esta cacion pero alguien sabe si la puedo encontrar en version de estudio y no en version de directo???

  • BRUCE IS A LEDGEND

  • The Best

  • Amazing!! So Good!

  • Do I smell a collabaration in the future? That would be FREAKING AWESOME!!!!

  • Fantastic...

  • Damn Michael Stipe can do no wrong..what a contrast of styles tha work together..great video

  • They compliment each other PERFECTLY! Bruce jams while Michael sings, and Michael dances from head-to-toe while Bruce sings!

  • who's that?! no, no, no please!!! patty is patty! dont't touch her, don't my god! nothing to do...

  • Springsteen originally wrote the music, thought it'd suit Patti Smith better and gave it to her. It's a Springsteen song at heart.

  • IMHO He made the right choice back then without a doubt.

  • yeah, good call, it has Bruce all over it.

  • no way, Natalie's voice is like a human sleeping pill

  • Bruce wrote the music as well. Patti just added her own lyrics

  • I like Patti Smith's version better. Plus, Bruce Springteen didn't write it on his own as some people have said, they both co-wrote it. I heard Springteen wrote the original lyrics, but Patti rewrote them from a female pespective.

Anyway, the song is awesome, and both Patti and Bruce are the best at singing it, I don't know why people keep comparing them all the time.

  • Great performance, great song, great musicians.

  • Patti smith is an over blown bitch

  • It is a Bruce song.

  • Bingo. Bruce wrote it, Patti Smith's version for some odd reason has received more play (at least on my local stations). In my opinion, Smith's version is absolutely terrible when compared to some of the live versions Springsteen and the E Street Band have cranked out. This version isn't my favorite, but if you dig back through various Springsteen live performances it's evident (at least to me) that he wipes his ass with Smith's version.

  • patti smiths version is miles better than this

  • I got to see the first VFC show in Philly in the pit. My 2 fav. artists are REM & Bruce - this was hands down, the great show I've ever seen!! And B/C the Night w/Stipe on lead was the greatest song I'll ever see at a concert!

  • בן זונה!

In hebrew it means "Fucking Awesome" (and also son of a bitch :P )

  • lol

  • UNREAL

  • WOW!!! A powerful performance by two great musicians.

  • Michael Stipe backed away from the high notes and Bruce Springsteen's 'solo'... he should stick to chords.

  • Yes, the solo is really bad.

  • Looking for a particular awesome version of this song, recorded in the late 70's. It has a ca. 1.30 minute long piano intro. It has been on youtube, but now its gone.:-( Anyone know where to find it, or where its recorded???

  • ohh yeah!!!! broke all!!! this is rock in roll!!

  • because rock belongs to bruuuuuuce!!!!

  • Fabulosa interpretación del "Boss" y de R.E.M.

  • Michael Stipe 4 ever, best songwriter/singer ever :D

  • Can't get enough of this.. 2 of the most amazing voices in popular music

  • Amazing!

  • love it.

  • great performance. Felt like they really shared the song. Prefer the Bruce part, but both are awesome

  • Because that night belonged to Bruce Springsteen and Michael Stipe. Great video!

  • Great Song. Really awesome! I would like to hear this song performed by Michael alone.

  • I wouldn't. He's ok but doesn't come close to the genious of The Boss.

  • genius*

  • just love it!!!

  • Yea...these guys are great.

    Bruce + E Street Band = Amazing

Michael Stipe = ten times that :-p

  • no band on earth do it like bruce and the e streeters... new album this year too... and i bet a tour i cant wait!!!

  • I LOVE the song! and Michael's voice is giving me goosebumps! but i also like the patti smith group's version! Great!

  • Well considering this is Bruce's song, maybe you might reconsider your opinion.

  • I love REM, and I hate Bruce Springsteen, but together, they just blow my mind. Friggin' awesome!!

  • great duo stipe is one of my favourits

  • my two heroes!

  • what a performance. two of rocks greatest.

  • WOW!!! If you ever want to show somebody the power of rock music, this is exhibit A. Two outstanding performers, an incredible band, and a rock song for the ages. A million thanks for posting this.

  • michael stipe (REM)is the BEST! not so keen on springsteen but hes ok i suppose.

  • What a powerful performance of a great song!

  • mickle is the best

  • two of the best

  • I love you Micheal Stipe and Bruce Springsteen!!!

  • feelin' it over here!!!

  • both of them are great...

  • Wow.

  • That was amazing... gave me chills!

  • i mean co wrote

  • Bruce actually wrote "Because the Night" for Patti Smith

  • It's Michael singing his idol (Patti Smith)'s song with one of the great performers of our time. What a treat. Patti's album 'Horses' is what made Stipe become a singer in the first place. He also did a whole book of photos following her on tour called "Two Times Intro". So lots of love in that performance.

  • that was amazing

  • Michael Stipe dances pretty weird and funny, but it's cool!!! Just nice!!!

  • When i first watched this video, i thought that stipe was completely outclassed. However, i have to agree with PM78 after watching it about 10 times. He does a good job, maybe needs to work on the dancing haha

  • My apologies...I got my facts mixed up. I can't believe I did that. Normally I'm on top of things. I suppose sometimes things get mixed around in my head.

  • This is sort of the 10,000 Maniacs version. Stipe is definitely singing that set of lyrics; Springsteen is singing a mixture of that set and the original lyrics.

  • This is so too damn good! Been repeating it over and over .. and over again ..

  • but it's not a 10,000 Maniacs song. Bruce co wrote it with Patti Smith, who did her own version in the 70's.

  • Two different artist singing a 10,000 Maniacs song. Does it get any better than this? I also like how Michael Stipe always changes the lyrics. I wonder if he does that on purpose or if it's a subconscious thing going on.

  • I know its 7 months ago but I hope you bought a clue by now as to who wrote this song.

  • OMFG - what a fantastic song sung by FANTASTIC artists...my favourite - I would hav ekilled to have been there! does anyone know where I could get an audio copy of this version?? I'd give the whole left side of my body!! lol!

  • Wow! Just plain fantastic!

  • demais demais demais \o/

  • Thank you for posting this video. I wished I had seen "Vote for change". Was it possible to see this concert on tv in the USA?

  • great stuff...two greats of modern american rock music. I think stipe just about pulls this off and does the boss some justice.

  • great song. what gets me is that bruce and michael are the same height. that kills me.

  • Bruce is playing his ass off! A great display of guitar skills!

  • Genial, mu buena, Stipe el mejor, como siempre

  • this is awesome.

i love rem fantastic band i seen them in balloch loch lomond.

    what a night
