Utubist512, You are seeing what I do, (maybe we look closer). Definately. When Keith sits on the drum riser at the end of the song, he has that brief smile , and looks to his right(presumably at Ronnie) and you can see the look on his face, Yea , we nailed it. Keith has just gotten better with age. Probably his slowing down on drug intake helped, but he has matured as a guitar player, and sounds more secure in his sound over the past 10 or so years.
This is the best music video I've ever seen! Staying on Keith's hands - it's like an instruction video. I love it. Thanks.
...Oh yeah, and Ron Wood is terrible. Bring back Mick Taylor! Let's start a movement. People should boycott their live shows until they bring MT back!
"Honky Tonk Woman", or "Brown Sugar" are great, but "Monkey Man" is Keith's defining moment. The most ruthlessly catchy, powerfully syncopated, and brutal guitar riff of his career. Prowls and pounces like a black cat. It in turn, may be the Stones' defining moment as well... No wonder it is my favorite!
I've seen the Stones several times from the late 60's, up to the late 90's. They burn the fucking place down every time. They don't sound better today than they did yesterday. They are fucking pros man. They would sound good beating on your mamma's pot and pans!
Those side tiles are SOOOOO ANNOYING!!!!!. What idiot though it was a good idea to put those on the left. Sorry, I had to get that out!
It's those little extra chords (mostly barre) he throws in every now and then. Kind of like on Honky Tonk Women. I'd still say the best performance he ever put on was Sympathy Devil on Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. I challenge any guitar player to come close. If you do...post it!
@rowjimmyb the reason mick taylor left was he listened to his wife bitchin,if, he would have sat tight sooner or later he would have got all the finacial reward he was after, mick n keith are a very closed circle.Woody eventually got full stones status on the steel wheels tour,he's set for life(i'd do it for free0
THE STONES WERE NOT THAT GREAT AT PERFORMING LIVE, AND JAGGER EVEN KNEW. THAT'S WHY THEY NEVER RELEASED THE 'ROCK N ROLL CIRCUS' UNTIL LIKE 10 YEARS OR SO?
They were a great live band for a few years in the 1960s. Then Richards and Jagger started doing serious amounts of heroine, and they became pretty shambolic right up until about 1978.
They got a LOT better when Ron Wood joined, as he's a truly world class guitarist. On a par with Richards.
But their live performances didn't really get really tight until Jagger stopped doing heroine. As in 1992-1993?
Ron Wood plays most of the lead these days. Leaving Keith to do what he does best - his blues/r+b rhythm.
Before Wood joined though, guys like Brian Jones and Mick Jones were actually pretty sloppy guitarists. They were good, but pretty unprofessional, and not world class.
You know, Richards trusts Wood. He knows he's world class. Don't think he had that with the other 2
@MrCeej9999 ....Mick Taylor...not Mick Jones....and Mick Taylor was one of the most succinct and precise Blues guitar players in the world. Ron Wood has never written, nor played for that matter, something as great as the outro solo to Sway, Can't You Hear Me Knockin', or literaly anything Mick Taylor played from 69-74. You know nothing about guitar playing if you think Wood is/was better than Mick Taylor. Lol.
@MrCeej9999 Its pretty well known that Keith wanted Wood because he was a non-threat to his control over the guitar sound of the stones. He found a guy that would play exactly what he told him to and was never much of a songwriting threat. Thats why Keith hated Mick Taylor, because he was better than him for one, and Mick was a LEAD guitar player. Its got to mean something that Mick Taylor was 17 years old playing in the Bluesbreakers with Mayal, while Wood was doing what again? Nothing?
@cgraber Wow! That's a lot of ignorance crammed into a single post. Keith never "hated" Mick Taylor. As a matter of fact, during the promotion of the re-release of Exile, Keith said, "If I had my way, Mick Taylor would still be in the band." As far as a career is concerned, Woody has accomplished significantly more than Taylor. Taylor is a brilliant blues player, lead player, and slide player, no doubt. But Woody has more credits and a lot more money. It all depends on how you define success.
@docthebluesman Please direct me to the songs that Wood wrote or played on that compare with Taylor's playing with the Stones from Hyde park in '69 through '74. The stated reason Taylor left is because the Glimmer Twins weren't giving him writing credit on many of the songs that he made great. I notice that no one has yet pointed me to a song that Wood plays a solo on that compares in quaility, depth, and skill to Sway, knocking, Casino Boogie, Honkey Tonk, Ventilator, etc? Still waiting.
@docthebluesman And Wood has been broke nearly the entire time of his tenure with the Stones. Read his autobiography. I did. Keith and Mick bailed him out of at least 4 times that he was flat busted from pissing his money away. Mick replaced Clapton with the Bluesbreakers for F's sake! Taylor's body of work with the Stones is better than Wood did with the Faces or the Stones for that matter. Black and Blue, Voodoo lounge? Those albums compares to Exile, Sticky Fingers, Goats Head? Really?
@MrCeej9999 IMHO NOT true. If anything Keith plays way MORE lead than he did say 25 years ago. He has steadily reasserted himself, further blurring the lines between who is the lead or rhythm player in the band. And say what you will about the studio efforts of the group, the truth is that their live guitar sound has never been more mesmerizing and tight than it is today. As a matter of fact the whole band play better live now than at any point in their earlier history. Like it? Yes I do.
@NightGallery I wish they were better than in 1973, but I respect your opinion. For me it feels empty without Mick Taylors guitar playing, but the Stones are still a great live band (of course)!
This is one of the riffs that can be played (almost) equally well in both standard and open G tunings, although the latter has a little more "drone." Most of Keff's riffs from '68 on have to be played in open G to sound anywhere near "right." This one is not physically difficult at all, but like all good things, requires patience. Mick T. (and Ronnie here) put truly nifty slide runs over it.
I know, you're probably thinking that here's a band in their 60's 70's? and you're right. But where were you in the 60's and 70's? Those of you that criticize the Stones weren't even around then ot never cared much for them. The Rolling Stones made such an impact on pop culture back them that you woul have had to be around back then and just not a twinkle in your mothers eye. Those of you that missed the 60's/70's Woodstock, Vietnam, and the list goes on, It's unfortunate.
Richards looks like he's honestly enjoying playing on stage after all these years. He can't just be doing it for the money. The guy just likes to play. Keith has the best riffs in the business
been a Stones fan for 45 years and I have always loved them all ..from Brian to Mick Taylor..Charlie..Ronnie...Wyman...Jagger..but I must say that what keeps me most interested in them now is Keith...could a person be more talented and so damn cool? :-)
However, Keith gained his reputation with memorable riffs in the late 60's and early 70's.
Because of this he deserves also great respect, even in the last years he became like a ghost on the big circus/stage that is called the Rolling Stones.

@occhioallallocco , yes to be honest ,the best stones stuff is from the 70s , just amazing stuff. AMAZING, and for me it ends with some girls. after that time i couldn't find the feeling again , maybe a few songs but that's it . still love them forever!!
@NightGallery You know, I agree with you wholeheartedly but you state it so well, much thanks,,,, I love this song! It has a groove that I can move to..
Its a shame they play their songs so disected now. Too many people on stage. They could make this a real rocker when playing live instead to me its a bore. Keep in mind they are and always have been my favourite but I still call it as I see it. I thought they did a lame job with cant you here me knocking as well. Slow it down a little and turn up the fucking distortion along with power chord instead of this boring open chord lame no distortion bullshit!! But thanks for posting.
As a hard-core Beatles fan since the age of 12, I have to agree. I rarely play my Beatles collection these days, but hardly a day goes by without me playing a Stones CD.
I believe Kieth is a hero to many of us because he basically said the hell with Life and it's ups and downs. He did the drugs for us all and went to the edge. We all can identify with being down and life going to shit and if we could we would have all been Keith Richards at some point.
the musicians play off each other and my belief is The Rolling Stones with Mick Jagger and Kieth Richards need each other, I do agree Mick needs Keith more than ViceVersa but they both will never reach their greatest potential as the Rolling Stones without each other. A band needs a front Man just like a business needs advertisement. plus if you know their history he has always been the business end of the band.Grow Up.
I kindly disagree, Mick has written some of the greatest Cliche's and rebellious lyrics next to Chuck Berry and Country music. ( "I was raised by a toothless bearded Hag" "Please allow me to introduce myself" I been bitten I been tossed around by evry she rat in this town"
"I saw her today at the reception" "I can't get no satisfaction") All Mick Jagger writings.
If you are a Stones fan and you don't own the DVD "Four Flicks" go out and get it now!! It's the best concert DVD I've seen and I own plenty of concert DVDs. It has incredible concerts and tons of behind the scenes documentary footage
This is REAL music......Keith is the last of his kind......we better give him all the love he deserves because kiddies, when he goes? Rock will take one step closer to the egress that MTV and American Idol have led us to.....Love LIVE the Greatest Rock band in the world. Long Live It's Guts and heart which is Keith Richards.
@fang66LSD Well stated. I couldn't agree more. For all of his idiosyncricies and strange habits ( past drug use maybe?), Keith Richards is a genius in rock. For those of us born around the Stones generation, I am so thankful to have seen Keith, Mick and the Stones perform. Today's music doesn't have a clue.
I've had the HONOR to have seen these guys a few times & there is no one past, present, or future that holds a candle to 'em. Truly what rock 'n roll is supposed to be.
@fang666LSD I completely agree and have been saying the same thing. We need to appreciate these geniuses while they're still performing because once they're gone... music will be in a very sorry state. I'm 20 years old and became a fan 6 years ago and they've been my favorite band ever since I discovered them with this very DVD and I've seen them twice already and can't wait until the next tour. LONG LIVE THE STONES
so true, just look at him here performing, what a gift he is to us, he shows how much he loves his music and he respects and loves his audience, after keith goes, sorry, thats all folks...
@fang666LSD Christ, your right! Eric Clapton had this 'Gunslingers' program on, what, a couple of years ago. Keith wasn't there but he's really not a slinger. Anyway, alot of the old veterans from the '60's were there, tearing it up. and who did they have from the modern era: John Mayer. John Mayer, are you kidding me. That's the future ? No, your right, say bye bye. Keith has always been my favorite out of all.
The Cockroaches also did a tiny club in DC (my hometown) which was overrun and the show was cut short once everyone and his brother found out that it was the Stones. XD
Keith will outlive us all because "he was exhumed from the dead and therefore cannot die now"!
Seriously though, this version sounds a lot like it's from the 95' tour; as in the CD "Stripped" which, by the way, if you don't own it, I seriously suggest you buy it--It's damned good! Worth every nickle.
I've always said that, no doubt he will outlive us all! he is a God, and I am already making plans to meet him this year...lucky I know someone who knows someone. I just want to tell him I've admired his work for years and get a quick pic with him if he doesn't mind. No stalking or harasing, just a 5 minute encounter.
I am not a starstruck person by any definition, Yet the only person I want to meet before I die is Mr. Keith Richard(s) (as he would like). He influenced my playing, my approach, and appreciation of riffs my whole life, since a child, and it's been noticed by many people who listened to me play.
@ela7145367030 ............I agree,.....I've met Alice Cooper, Frank Zappa, and many others..........always wanted to have a conversation with him also.......he had a huge influence on my guitar playing,..... his survival of his battles with drugs and alcohol have also been an inspiration to persue recovery.......put it this way,..........if he can stay clean anyone can
embalm funny you should say cockroaches and Keith Richards will be the last thing in the universe. Back in like 1984 the Stones did a pre world tour gig at this 100 person capacity club in my hometown in Massachusetts (and yet if you bring it up at least 5000 residences of this town swear they were there). Anyway they headlined under the alias the Cockroaches.
cockroaches and Keith Richards will be the last thing left in the Universe.. Long Live Keith you rocking old leathery druggedout fucking Bloke~! Rock ON!

Great Stones tune. Love it. Check out Gov't Mule's version of this classic song from their concert at Mountaim Jam 2010.

the stones could farth for an hour on stage and it would still sound amazing they are gods of rock !

@clubfun12
am afraid you are right, my friend.
They are today a parody of what they have been in the 70's.
Brian Jones and Mick Taylor are gone....
Keith can only play his role of King in the kingdom of farths.....
occhioallallocco 1 year ago
@occhioallallocco , yes to be honest ,the best stones stuff is from the 70s , just amazing stuff. AMAZING, and for me it ends with some girls. after that time i couldn't find the feeling again , maybe a few songs but that's it . still love them forever!!

At the time, I never would have imagined the Stones music would have withstood time's test so much better than the Beatles. It certainly has.

Nvg8r1 1 year ago
I kindly disagree, Mick has written some of the greatest Cliche's and rebellious lyrics next to Chuck Berry and Country music. ( "I was raised by a toothless bearded Hag" "Please allow me to introduce myself" I been bitten I been tossed around by evry she rat in this town"
"I saw her today at the reception" "I can't get no satisfaction") All Mick Jagger writings.

This is REAL music......Keith is the last of his kind......we better give him all the love he deserves because kiddies, when he goes? Rock will take one step closer to the egress that MTV and American Idol have led us to.....Love LIVE the Greatest Rock band in the world. Long Live It's Guts and heart which is Keith Richards.
fang666LSD 1 year ago 20
@fang66LSD Well stated. I couldn't agree more. For all of his idiosyncricies and strange habits ( past drug use maybe?), Keith Richards is a genius in rock. For those of us born around the Stones generation, I am so thankful to have seen Keith, Mick and the Stones perform. Today's music doesn't have a clue.
kilts4u2 1 year ago 5
Props to ya fang666LSD, very well said!
I've had the HONOR to have seen these guys a few times & there is no one past, present, or future that holds a candle to 'em. Truly what rock 'n roll is supposed to be.
hfknd03 1 year ago 2
@fang666LSD I completely agree and have been saying the same thing. We need to appreciate these geniuses while they're still performing because once they're gone... music will be in a very sorry state. I'm 20 years old and became a fan 6 years ago and they've been my favorite band ever since I discovered them with this very DVD and I've seen them twice already and can't wait until the next tour. LONG LIVE THE STONES
kevinjim33 1 year ago 2
so true, just look at him here performing, what a gift he is to us, he shows how much he loves his music and he respects and loves his audience, after keith goes, sorry, thats all folks...
grenda5 1 year ago

XD
janedoe1024 2 years ago
Keith will outlive us all because "he was exhumed from the dead and therefore cannot die now"!
Seriously though, this version sounds a lot like it's from the 95' tour; as in the CD "Stripped" which, by the way, if you don't own it, I seriously suggest you buy it--It's damned good! Worth every nickle.
janedoe1024 2 years ago
I've always said that, no doubt he will outlive us all! he is a God, and I am already making plans to meet him this year...lucky I know someone who knows someone. I just want to tell him I've admired his work for years and get a quick pic with him if he doesn't mind. No stalking or harasing, just a 5 minute encounter.

I am not a starstruck person by any definition, Yet the only person I want to meet before I die is Mr. Keith Richard(s) (as he would like). He influenced my playing, my approach, and appreciation of riffs my whole life, since a child, and it's been noticed by many people who listened to me play.
Long live Mr. Richards!!!

embalm funny you should say cockroaches and Keith Richards will be the last thing in the universe. Back in like 1984 the Stones did a pre world tour gig at this 100 person capacity club in my hometown in Massachusetts (and yet if you bring it up at least 5000 residences of this town swear they were there). Anyway they headlined under the alias the Cockroaches.
