I think the reason for the negativity from the band is because there was so much bad feeling surrounding them when recording the album. I can't fault the first half of The Lamb, - but apart from a couple of exceptions (Lilywhite Lillith, The Lamia and Slippermen) I don't like the second half that much. I don't understand why The Lamb in its entirety is put on a pedestal when such albums like Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England, Trick and Wind are just as good.
Sorry - but I can't handle Phil's attitude. He looks back on all this with contempt, but people were trying to break new ground. Maybe Peter's costumes got in the way, but he was trying to push the envelope - something Phil wouldn't understand. For a great example of an excellent drummer who never sold out and always tried to expand his horizons instead of taking the easy road of pop garbage - see Bill Bruford.
Phil was a pop whore in the 80's and 90's, and good for him! That doesn't take one bit away from what a great musician he really IS. You have to admit too that Easy Lover gets stuck in your head.
It's the best albumthey ever did! The story does make sense its very surreal but the imagery is fantastically strong. "Fly on a wind shield" is amazing! "Lily white Lillith" is so powerful ! The lyrics Peter didn't write are the weakest on the album. Yellow plastic shoo-bee-doo! : )
People who think that the second record is boring, well...they're missing out. Beautiful songs on it ("the lamia", "in the rapids" and the great finale "it"...).
It's so weird to hear most of the band members (excluding PG) cutting the album down?! It is one of the best albums of all time. It amazes me they can disown it.
@OllieKubrick1 It IS puzzling to hear them always knocking this LP. This thing was a crazy masterpiece! Tony didn't like the lyrics to 'Lamia'... he's nuts! Beautiful imagery to match the beautiful music... and it tells a nice concise story to boot! What's his problem?
I love the comments by Phil & Peter in the middle. Maybe all these ignorant morons who crucify Phil will shut the hell up now and get over themselves.

@dummytree its a misunderstanding because people think its a b-sides but its just part of a concept album. How sad people were so stupid to realize.

That was very interesting - thanks. I saw Genesis in a University gymnasium in Ontario just after Peter G had left.
