Does anyone know if Kim Weston did an album with Marvin Gaye in the 70's? Or was that another duet collaborator? I remember listening to the album but can't remember if it was Kim.
@88duckbill You might be thinking about an album Marvin did with Diana Ross in the 70's. OR you might be thinking of the album Kim Weston did with Johnny Nash (of "I Can See Clearly Now" fame.)
@88duckbill - Kim Weston & Marvin Gaye are responsible for one of my all-time favorite songs: "It Takes Two." They released a duet album "Take Two," in 1966.
@ELLADOGZ Yeah, Kim has a real powerhouse voice. Do a search for "Thrill A Moment" and there are a couple of spots where her voice cuts through so powerfully, she nearly overtakes everything else on the record!
I was 14 when this first came out, and it was the first 45 I bought. In addition to the song, I also like the old Gordy label saying "it's what's in the grooves that counts"
@6motion6 Big Smile here! My folks bought the Temptations' "Get Ready" 45, probably the year I was born. I still have that record and besides the songs on both sides, I too really liked that old Gordy logo! It was some years before I could read and when I figured out the "It's what's in the grooves that counts" slogan, I thought it was about the COOLEST thing you could run around saying (and I did say that to a lot of people!, lol!)
Glad there is another person who appreciates the old logos as well as the music. I would have loved to see a child running around saying "it's what's...." Great story! I still like to say that.
@6motion6 lol! After reading your comment, I told myself I'm going to start using that again! I think it's just such a great slogan, you could almost say it in any situation and it would just sound cool. If you say it right, people will just think its some hip saying that they hadn't heard yet!
@6motion6 HAPPY UPDATE: I worked that slogan into a conversation today with a co-worker! We were talking about how our company seems to be trying too hard to cut corners to improve the profit line. I said, "Hey, just remember- 'It's what's in the grooves that counts!'" He said "What did you say?" I said it a second time, trying to say it wit a bit of an all-knowing attitude and he said after a pause: "That's true, that's true!"
Yes, it's a real shame that James (and Benny, among others) never were able to receive the accolades they richly deserved. I would wager they would have never guessed that 40 plus years after their work people would not only be interested in Motown in general, but in their contributions specifically. Obviously a big thanks to Standing In The Shadows Of Motown. The whole Motown experience--writers, producers, artists, musicians, etc.--are simply peerless!
@mattforte192 I still find it amazing how much talent was buzzing at Hitsville. The right time, the right place, the right people. That sort of combination- I don't think we'll ever see another recording company, songwriters or musicians like this again. What is so sad though is how easily Motown tossed away the Funk Brothers- they weren't even invited to that Motown 25 Special, which is a true shame. But their fans will always hold them in the highest esteem.
Another Motown masterpiece in such a large stable! Yeah, I'm biased but I gotta believe James Jamerson is the best bassist of all time, and Benny Benjamin is the greatest drummer (no disrespect to Uriel and Pistol who were also great in thier own right). Some of Benny's strongest and best known tunes speak volumes (besides this one): Uptight; Get Ready; Girl, Why You Wanna Make Me Blue among many. Benny Benjamin, the inventor of the Motown drum sound!
@mattforte192 Matt, if you're biased about James Jamerson and Benny Benjamin, well I'm proud to say I am too. Not to say I don't love other musicians' work, but I've just never found anything else that gives me a musical rush like the Funk Brothers' work and James and Benny were unbelieveable together. Who else has come up with such an instantly identifiable drum lick as Benny? And James has been a benchmark for really opening up what a bass can do on a pop song. Love your comment- thanks!
@mattforte192 good to hear people recognising the most soulful bass player ever ,everyone one should know how good this guy is, but just like all the greats ...never fully appreciated till there gone....many thanks
@wheelworker1 lol! you mean the goons who voted "thumbs down?" Maybe the votes weren't for the song itself- it may be the video- I can accept that, but anyone who can't rock to this song has to be out to lunch! :-)
@tomovox Greetings! Actually, I don't know how anyone can fault the finest Motown videos on YouTube. Whenever I think of Kim Weston videos, I think tomovox. ~Kim Weston Fan Page

@yetibexiobo Makes me feel good reading how much you like this song! Oh man, I'm so completely with you on this one- Kim really does have a special voice and you're so right about how good this song makes you feel! Thanks for the comment!
@tomovox Thanks for the reply, appreciated it. It truly is a great song, I've liked motown artists and more for a long time but only recently have discovered this song. Todays music is incomparable to this and many others made at the time, sheer class! Thanks for the post, real music!
There is no other version of this song but Kim Weston's. Thanks for this post. Don't ever take it away. She was a great talent. I love this song so much. Thanks, again.
@necktieguy1 Hi necktieguy! As long as it's allowed, I'll never dare to pull this down, lol! Thanks so much for adding to the great comments on this wonderful lady!
@blondie9999original Hi Blondie! Really glad to get your comment! The Doobie Brothers' version was my first introduction too; I like what they did with it- they accomplished the trick of making their own. When I heard Kim's version, I was hooked on her original forever after! Still, when I finally heard Kim's it made me appreciate that the Doobie Brothers did a pretty good job of keeping a Motown sort of groove going, but wow!! - nobody could ever top the Funk Brothers and Kim!
@CharlesBarry HI Charles- this was an alternate take recorded around the same time as the version that was released. I'm with you- I like this one even better, but maybe Quality Control or Holland Dozier Holland felt it would be almost too much for a Top 40 audience of that time. This version continues to amaze me; I thought the released version was really tough, but this performance takes the song to levels I don't think ANYONE else could have achieved.
Kim Weston burns the track as only she can in this incredibly great Motown Masterpiece (different than original 45rpm mix) that should have gone to #1 and would have if given airplay...for some strange reason lame Radio Programmers would not program Kim Weston songs but us fans wore her old vinyl recordings out...the Magnificent Voice of Motown is the ultimate! Bravo Kim Weston!!!
@bradly2007 It always puzzles me why Kim didn't become a bigger name and why Motown seemed to keep some of her best material in the vaults. At any rate, the fact that we're listening to her music and talking about it to this day shows the woman had all the rights to becoming a star and for her fans, she's among Motown's biggest and brightest stars! Thanks for your fantastic comments!
The first time I heard this song was on the "Tamla Motown Gold" 3 CD collection. It's hard to find since it was made in England. The cover is white with gold letters. I found it at some music store in Boston that has many floors of just music. I liked this song since then
@whately47 I really find it amazing that it didn't do more damage on the charts when it was released. The nice thing though is that this seems to be one of those records that gets more attention with each passing year. I first heard it back in 1981 on a radio station. Then I didn't hear it for years, but suddenly it seemed everyone was talking about this fantastic track. You're definitely right: it is OUTSTANDING!
@holgerspeckter lol! I love Kim, she definitely has an amazing voice, especially when you consider how young she was when she was recording at Motown.
@Lorenzo1950 this is a very complicated (at least for me) tempo/beat to play and to play it in perfect time AND throw those rapid-fire drum fills in is incredible. I don't think anyone other than a jazz musician in general and Benny Benjamin in particular could ever do this sort of a beat justice.
@ac3491 thank you very much! I'm always happy when someone likes the pictures that go with the music- it's fun to try to come up with something visually that matches the power of the music. (now if I truly matched kim's vocal power and fire, my computer would have burned up before I finished the video!)
and yes in my opinion she was motowns most underrated solo artist together with hattie littles.
I really love kim (also few songs of her mgm work). This video is really great and you got some nice rare pics :)
I still hope they will release her Take Me In Your Arms album on vinyl... I once contacted a label but they said they have no chance at the moment because UMG re-release some stuff by themself so there's no way...
@Individuell83 I'm so glad to have a fellow Kim Weston fan on board! Having bought the 2-cd Kim Weston Motown Anthology, I fell even more deeply in love with the woman. There also seems to be quite a lot of material she recorded with Holland-Dozier-Holland. Her cover of "Come And Get These Memories" would have made for a fantastic release.
@Individuell83 yes, I've been really going crazy over all the previously unreleased stuff that has been coming out lately by all the Motown artists. some really amazing music!
yes that is really true and there are still tons of unreleased material. I was really positive shocked when Jonathan showed me an article that Meet The Supremes will be re-released as an expanded CD...
on CD one is mostly the original album in mono and stereo and on CD 2 some version of earlier songs like "Heavenly Father" with flo leading in stereo and other unreleased stereo mixes. plus there are live recordings included from 62 and 64 which were meant to be released on the
live live live album which was also never released plus a book with really early unreleased pictures and an interview with barbara martin with the girls :D
@Individuell83 PS. I've heard that there is question on whether or not there was actually going to be a "Take Me In Your Arms" album. All the same, Kim deserved at the very least that one album and at best, an album each year she was with Motown.
Take Me In Your Arms, I'm Still Loving You, Helpless, Don't Compare Me With Her, Love (Makes Me Do Foolish Thnigs), Stop In The Name Of Love, Looking For The Right Guy, A Little More Love, Come And Get These Memories ! ! !, Go Ahead And Laugh, Any Girl In Love (also originally by The Supremes) and Drop In The Bucket.
As you can see most of the songs has been already released and as you can also see the album would have been AMAZING.
