@rdproductions01 Yes! VSTs and digital wave-table "synths" are of the future! I'm just kidding. Music is no fun without my analogs. The software stuff lacks the richness of analog, and tries to cover that with excessive reverb and delay.
I could listen to the 60 non-stop for hours. One night I took mine up to the club and patched it into the mixer and let the arp go on a smooth arpeggio for background between sets. A couple people asked what was playing. It just feels very nice in the brain, the sound of this synthesizer...and slowly opening/closing the filter with a touch of LFO really made the soft arp come to life. Love that synth. :)
I sold my Juno-60 many years back to pay the rent...bad move! Luckily I still have my Juno-6 and a recently acquired Juno 106 (with newly restored voice chips!).
I've owned a number of different keyboards over the years and this is still my favourite line of synthesizers. They're beautifully designed, well built and have elegant, easy to program interfaces. Not to mention the killer sounds.
Each one has it's own unique character but they are all worth having.
I miss my Junos soooo much! Had a Juno 6 and a 60. Practically gave them away when I ran out of space. Such a distinctive and lush sound. Always good to hear
MAN these filters bring back memories. had a korg poly61 but our soundguy had a juno 106. really envied his ability to change parameters without navigating a menu. i'd rather hear a synth string pad than a orchestral string symphony ANYDAY. excellent demo. serene.
for those interested, Not all juno106's have dodgy voice chips, a large batch of 106's do have the problem but not all, i've had a 106 since 1988 in regular use with no problems, so don't let the voice chip thing stop you considering getting one if you like the 106 sound, as there is a good chance of getting a good problem free one.
@KeltyVince I agree, i own a JUNO 106 bought in 1985, use them 2 a 3 times weekly for almost 26 years and it is still running without dead voice chips and the same (not leaking) battery. Am I lucky ore ...
If you can buy the 106 ore 60 ore 6 ore whatever from those old juno synths, you won't regret. And forget the discussions about which sounds better.
can someone please explain to me what this whole 106 voice issue is? I am very confused and am pretty new to analog synths. Since i was thinking about purchasing a juno, i just want to understand thier faults. Thanks.
@TheDLovas Juno 106 is known for its breaking of the voicechips, iow you lose a voice (it goes silent or hangs, crackles, pops...). Mine unfortunately does have a bad chip also. There are 6 voices in the 106, so worst case scenario you'd end up replacing all of them at EUR 40,- each.
I was lucky enough to pick up a Juno 106 a few days ago at a bargain. It'd gone completely silent, owner didn't know what to do. I opened her up, found 2 fuses gone bad (tho not popped) and replaced them > it's alive! And best of all, no bad voices! Didn't inform the previous owner, most expensive fuses he's ever bought :-)
Nice demo of the two Juno's. Love those rich 106 pads. By the way, I use the Kenton Pro-DCB with my Juno-60. Excellent for arpeggiated filter sweeps synced to a midi source.
I keep hearing about the voice chip issue but how serious is it? I mean does it depend on the usage of the instrument or will they die given a certain age? Thanks
i think it has to do with age. basically the plastic around the chip makes it go stop working after a while. look up 'juno-106 chip' on here and look at the first video for more info on why they go bad and a good way to get them back to life.
@maccagrabme i think it is luck of the draw. some died a long time ago. mine is going strong. so all about same age but some are good and some aren't. easy to fix if you remove the plastic from the chip.
@mindphlux Its 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. You will pick up a 106 cheaper than a 60 but the 60 has a fab arpeggiator and the 106 doesnt but its got midi so you can send complicated arpeggios to it from a pc or another synth but that defeats the object. I've owned both and now only have the 106. I miss the 60 but I also have a JP8 and JP6 so not short of anologue fatness.
@mindphlux 60! I used to have a 6: the slider was broken so I sold it. The 106 gets boring imo. The 6/60 are way fatter, and you can't beat the arpeggiator, especially when hooke up to another clock outputting device. MIDI is overrated, unless absolutely necessary.
I had a near permanent loan of a Juno 106 around 24 years ago and missed it so much that I recently bought one from ebay for seriously large amounts of cash but it was worth it. It's in great condition, all 6 six voices work and it sound beautiful. One of my favourite all time synths.
you will have to get yourself a Juno 6 and complete the family Marco!! excellent as usual:) Also great to hear what the 106 sounds like with all 6 voices, i had forgotten!
I rarely use my 106 anymore... it suffered the dreaded voice chip prob. Replaced one of them. only, to my dismay, realized TWO of the chips were bad. I can play up to five notes, but once I hit that bad chip with note 6... un-attractive noise. ...sigh... :( Do you know where I might find another good chip?
If you can pinpoint the exact chips that are gone in test mode, you can remove them and eliminate the horrible sound they make. My 106 has been operating on 4 voices for ages and I'm quite happy with it.
If you do want that 6th voice, I remember coming across a website somewhere that sells 'copies' of the Roland voice chips, and I hear they sound like the real things. I own a Roland JX3P, not a Juno (from around the same era) so I couldn't give you my own personal opinion, but you might wanna check that out? :)
analogue reconnaissance. hang on, analogue renaissance. I've been running on 3 chips, 2 of them with busted resistor thingy, it does wild ms20 feedbacks.
I bought a synth with two dead chips and replaced them with two of the reproductions. They required a tiny bit of tweaking under the hood, just the resonance trimpot. If you listen VERY closely you can still notice a slight difference between the originals and the repros (when in the maintainence mode) until they are good and warmed up.
I COMPLETELY recommend them over salvaged chips from eBay that WILL someday die as well.
@THESonicMMM The problem with those chips is the materials used. It is ceramic sustrate with circuitry and then coated. After an extended period the coating becomes conductive thus interfering with the operation. I have seen a method where you carefully remove the chips and soak them in a solvent softening the coating. It is then carefully removed thus restoring the chips functions. The instructions might even be here in detail on You Tube. I'll check around.
@THESonicMMM Drop the chips into a jar of acetone for a couple days and peel off the coating. They should be good as new. There are a few 'how to' videos here showing the process.

Would you say that the bass on the 106 can get bigger, juicier, etc. than the 60?

@NightfurMovie I'd say the 60 has better bass (if you set it right). I'm pretty sure the neighbours were feeling some of it :p
