  • Where I live We have Air Tran 717's comming into Columbus Ohio everyday. It looks like a DC-9 from a distance but truly a quieter plane than a DC9.

  • @wdwron08 I love the whine and roar from jet engines, but I know how different the flight experience can be inside the plane.

  • I was on that plane

  • i've been on a 717 to fly from brussels to athens and it was quite good actually...

  • NA734-- I've flown on a few 717s. They're configured like an old DC-9 inside (2seater/aisle/3seater) but they're quieter. I think the engines are higher-bypass turbofan engines (Rolls-Royce, I believe). The old DC-9s (before Boeing bought MD and began producing the DC9 as a B717) were much louder -- had much older Pratt & Whitney jet engines. P&Ws engines are nice and quiet now too, but back in the era of the classic DC9, they were pretty loud.

  • what airport is this at

  • im flying on one of those today

  • what airport was this filmed at???

  • Nice quality.

  • Crop duster... 737 and MD80 much smoother and aesthetically pleasing inside cabin

  • Take off was steeeeeepppp!

  • @colonary16 the 717 ( like its McDonnel-Douglas predecesors) had somewhat overpowered engines so that they could do short field operations and such.

  • I got the privilege of sitting next to an engine on one of these in the 2nd last row.... Absolutely no view out of the window whatsoever! The engine blocked it and it was LOUD

  • I've flown on both the 717 and 737 of Airtran many times but the 717 is my favorite the business class seats I like, lots more leg room and wider seats

  • What airport was this at

  • @vfr802 the plane IS very nice, althought its mcdonnald douglas counterpart, the MD-80 series is not as nice although they appear extremely similar from the outside

  • These are great planes to fly in

  • Love the sound of the Rolls Royce engines.

  • Never been on a 717. Can someone tell me how comfy and noisy and such it is? Great aircraft from the exterior though!

  • I haven't flown on the 717 yet, but it seems to rate high for people who have, judging from comments I've seen here and with similar 717 videos posted.

  • @vfr802 I flew on an AitTran B717 from KATL to KMCO and it was excellent. I got lucky and got one of the eight seats located beside the emergency exits on the wings so I got extra leg room. It was a quiet flight, very comfortable, and worth the fare. Although I guess it sort of depends on the airline you are flying with.

  • @NA734 nice plane. kinda cramped, noisy by engine but overall nice plane

  • @NA734 it's very quite

  • @NA734 they are not bad the closer to the front you are the quieter but in the back it can be a little loud but not to bad

  • @NA734 have you ever been on an MD-80, similar (717 being development of md-80) in that thee back is deafening with engine noise, and the front having an eerie whistling of wind, no engine noise at all. perfect seats for sleeping. i prefer to be over the front half of the wing, a nice balence between alot of noice, and none at all.

  • @NA734 Ive sat next to the engine and its just like a md 80, brutal.

  • @loh1110 - do you mean it in a good way? or a bad way? The engine sounds in these planes (717, MD-80, MD-90, DC-9) are pretty awesome, and thats one of the main reasons why I love flying them. Plus I think the design is way better than the 737.

  • @NA734 - If I could, I would only fly on a 717. It is my favorite airplane ever, and I love the engine sound. Due to them being budget airlines (Southwest, AirTran, etc), you won't necessarily get the comfiest seats, but I know the seats are more comfortable than 737 seats. It is about average noise-wise, all airline jets are fairly noisy. AirTran, and I guess southwest now, offers free XM radio, so just plug your headphones in and go! I know this post is late, but I felt like posting anyways.

  • @NA734 It's just a smaller DC-9/MD. I didn't notice much extraordinary noise, but it IS a bit cramped.

  • @NA734 I loved flying on the 717!

  • @NA734 it is great

  • @NA734 ive been on one and its not that noisy

  • @NA734 been on one twice; really was not bad. it was not that noisy; and pretty comfortable. i had my daughter with me who at time was 3; then 4; she didnt complain one bit! so; hope that helps you out. last flight i took was a air tran 737- lots of turbulance- wow. take care!

  • A Common sigh at Port Columbus (CMH) Ohio. The 717 is a great sounding Jet.

  • Ive been on a airtrain 717 twice

  • Man I can't wait to fly in the 717 next month when I go to Orlando :)

  • Glad to get some B717's in Finland, thanks Blue1. It's been a pleasure to fly on MD-90s already.

  • Agreed, I like them better than the McDonnell Douglas versions. The Boeing 717 run a higher thrust GE Engine than the MD series. It gives you that extra kick in the pants feel.

  • I've been on an Airtran 717 before, Nice plane

  • I love delta but airtran looks pretty cool this looks like Newport virgins airport

  • ooooooooh im gonna be on that this saturday ( im happy this aint a crash vid )

  • Epic.

  • @kirbyks No, not at all, I just respect people. I bet you'd be the first one to whine about racism as well. Goofy twit.

  • @MrGrevy Really? Let's see now, who called who a disgusting jerk? Oh yeah, that was YOU. Hypocrite.

  • @kirbyks Oh well I was trying to defend people. I don't think that's the same...

  • @kirbyks Gee, that's a pretty crass thing to say. You must be a real treat. Disgusting jerk.

  • Airtran. Lucky to have these jets. sad to hear it ceased production. damn Air Canada

  • i love the style of the 717 however the interior is a little tiny and i was like whoa!! i took a 717 to florida and a 737 back and although i love both the 737 was my favorite because there was more room and it's just a big plane! when will airtran get another delivery of planes?

  • 717-200 is much quieter than the 737NG with it's BR715 engines. Makes you wonder if there'd be thousands of 717's rather than 737NG's, had Boeing decided to not phase out this aircraft.

  • I fly to BTV every summer. Nice little airport!

  • airtran is my favorite airline company

  • The airport is BTV (Burlington, VT)

  • It uses a lot of the runway for a little powerfull jet.

  • 717 can kick an MD-83's ass any day

  • I have been on 1 of these before && im going on one again Febuary 5th my flight leaves @ 7:20 in the morning && we will land in Baltimore && take a cab or train to Washington DC. I LOVE IT AT TAKE-OFF IT FEELS LIKE YOUR ON A ROLLER -COASTER WITH LOUD ENGINES !!!!!!!!!!!!!! (:

  • I'm flyin in one of those suckers next week PHL-MCO, cannot wait

  • This airport looks like Newport News Virginia. Could the runway be any shorter

  • Definitely not PHF. Look at the mountain in the background...

  • I fly the 717 and it is a great machine.

  • you for airtran?

  • It wasn't that the 717 is a bad jet....it was because it had nothing in common with the rest of the boeing series of jets. Airlines wanted commonality among their fleets. All airbus or all boeing etc. Although this jet is called a Boeing it was really an MD designed craft, so it's not really a "real" boeing.

  • That along with the fact that the 100-seat jet market had become rather competitive. The new ERJ series and CRJ-900 really beat up 717 sales, and Boeing saw the 717 as somewhat of an internal competitor to its 737-600.

  • how come I never hear about these things?

  • Boeing stoped making this plane because they were not selling. Bombardier and Embrier make better regional airliners, more fuel efficient and quieter. Also don't need the runway length that a 717 needs.

  • But they were also selling it as a medium range airliner

  • this isnt an rj though...

  • dude what airport ????????

  • i like airtran. cool vidio !

  • The 717 looks a lot like the DC-9's that ValuJet flew.

  • Yea except they aren't 25-35 years old and they dont burst into flames when the pilot makes a hard landing. lol

  • LMAO or on takeoff lol

  • I like the 717's......When I flew it was from MCO to ICT with a stop in ATl........I cant believe boeing quit producing them

  • Air Tran SUCKS but They do have low faires but as low as southwest

  • AirTran does not suck, and the only reason WN fairs are so low is because they have a contract on fuel. When that contract is over in a couple of years, they will be just like the rest of the airlines.

  • Yea but SWA is doing bad now cuz the oil price is so low cuz of the economy andnow their lock in price is higher thab the price now. If they can get themselves out of the contract and figure something out then they may be able to charge 50-60 dollar fares like USA3000.

  • Yeah, how long is it going to stay that way? lol

  • lol probably not that long.

  • AirTran doesn't suck, but they aren't great either. But thats my opinion. You might like them if u were on my flight to Florida in October, this dude in first class knocked down the curtains and it fell on a passenger and his soda got all over his white shirt and suit, it was sooo funny. lol

  • either its me or the glare from the light, but it looks like they're not using flaps; which i think is unlikely

  • it looks like that because we almost always use flaps 5 degrees, which is hardly noticable. shorter runways require more flaps

  • Yea i know that if its a shorter runway its less flaps, but i didnt know the runway length. They also use less flaps if the plane is really heavy. Thanks for replying. :]

  • well joey, it depends on climb gradient requirments... less flaps usually means better 2nd segment climb, but more runway used... more flaps usually means less runway used but less climb. It depends on more than runway length and weight. Certain departure procedures require different climb requirments. Like I said, flaps 5 degrees is typical on the 717, which you can barely notice from a vid. I had a passenger question me why I didnt use flaps, I told him we used He didnt believe me though lol

  • Ok i have a better understanding of it now. Thanks.

  • Why is it boeing stoped produced the 717's...Theyre amazing planes...Anyone agree?....I flew one from MCO to ATL then to ICT

  • I agree, I love that plane!

  • the boeing 717 is one of the most under appreciated jet planes next to the lockheed l-1011

  • I guess the industry has decied that T-tail rear mount engines are not effecient anymore.except for the ultra uncomfortable CRJ...

  • Nice!!!

  • Thanks

  • fokker 100

  • 717-200

  • I think American Airlines were the only ones in the US who had Fokker 100's and they retired those.

  • It's a shame they ceased production of these planes, they're a true joy to fly in.

  • I haven't flown on one yet. When I've checked out a few other AirTran clips here on YT, comments are generally 'very' positive without elaborating too much. I'm curious as to specifically what it is ppl like best. Is it more about the B717, the airline, or both? No doubt it's appearance is sweet.

  • It's a bit of both - very few airlines fly the B717. AirTran has free sodas and some damn good ginger snaps, and that's about it. But the 717s - oh, the 717s - think of it as an enlarged regional jets with some damn powerful engines on them. Very fuel efficient too.

  • @vfr802

I think it's a pretty comfortable airline, both in terms of service and seating. The 717-200 is wider (I think?) than DC-9's, MD-80's, but can only have 2-3 seating arrangements so you get wider seats. More room.

  • @vfr802 ive flown on one there really cheap when you fly on airtran

  • @vfr802 I have flown in a 717 on my Trip to Orlando from Harrisburg on AirTran.. I have a video on my Channel of the landing... The plane is a great plane, I think it is a comfortable plane for being small... Great plane :D

  • Guys, we get it :) Uploader1010 didn't mean this specific airplane was old, at least that's not how I took it. The evolution of this series goes a long, long way back. I was surprised when I checked out the B717 on Boeing's site. Quite interesting.

  • really old plane :) nice vid !

  • Thanks :) I was surprised to see how far back its history goes. Good stuff.

  • That's a very new plane! The design is old, but the avionics and engines are new.

  • The design of most of these aircraft stems back to the Sud-Aviation Caravelle.

  • Yes, but this is based on the DC-9 and MD-80(these designs are stemmed off the caravelle). Apart from that, this is a new plane in terms of construction and the other factors I mentioned above.

  • Its based on the MD95, and they was not selling as many as planed. AirTran tried to talk them into making a B717-300 a couple of years ago. Did Boeing accept? No, bottom line is when AirTran 717's get to old to fly. They going to be just like WN and fly all 737's.

  • That is a new plane! That is at most a 10-year-old plane. It seems new when you say the technical title, "The DC-9-95", or "The MD-95"
