My favorite weather report song. I love the way it builds up and falls apart over and over again. There is an indescribable atmosphere right from the start that is familiar yet alien. Perfection.
one of the most underrated songs by Shorter. I love the build up. I wish they would have played this track live more, it would have been interesting to hear jaco play on this.
@timages 13 - I believe that Sweetnighter represented something transcendent in the world and for the band. I saw the band in '74, same lineup, and my memory of that night recalls a kind of magic that was demonstrated by Jimi, Cream, Miles, and maybe 1 or 2 others - I saw all of the above live. I didn't like Weather Report's other albums.
We're listening to one of the great Weather Report pieces here by Wayne Shorter on perhaps their best album...to these ears anyway. Zawinul called it, "sound tracks for the mind"
I couldn't agree more! I've always be partial to the writing of Wayne Shorter, the runic style of his playing and here he certainly doesn't disappoint.
I thought I was the only person who knew of and appreciated this song. I know WR is acclaimed for other music projects and compositions, but this is my favorite.
The first time I heard it on the radio back around '73 I said "whoa, wait a miniute!" who is that?" When I found out I bought the album. They had albums back in those days, lol. Anyway, thanks for posting this.
@kountzer You sound so silly, Manolete was from the Album Sweetnighter which won the Downbeat Poll for best jazz album the year it was released..do you think there might be others you've heard and appreciated this beautiful timeless runic piece besides you?
@timages13 Back in '74 that WR album got some playing time, but these days when you mention weather report most people bring up the music influenced by Jaco Pastorious. Sweetnighter is my WR favorite. I am glad others like it a lot also.
@kountzer It happens to my favorite as well! Sweetnighter to me had just the right tenor in it's compositions and the rawness in some of its playing. When you listen to their latter albums they sound so over produced. It also has these great leaps, these totally different sounding pieces with some real gems like: Will, Non Stop Home, and one of my all time favorites 125th Street Congress. Sadly the creativity they displayed in Sweetnighter could not sustain itself in their latter work.
Fusion Jazz....cold-blooded back in the day......Miroslov Vetus, Wayne Shorter.....Joe Zawinul....can't get much betta than that..I'm leaving someone out, but I can't think who it is..
Great album, totally underrated Jazz Fushion group.

@kountzer you have to listen to each one individually; thats the greatest part of WR, each album is its own journey from track to track

I had always appreciate the Wayne Shorter's soprano saxophone work. It's divine! Thanks for this post.
