I remember when Bevan would pull the Aussies out of the shitter all the time. Provided some great moments like when he saved then in the 2003 world cup against England
"Roger Harper fields well to his own bowling" um I dont think so. He dropped a sitter return catch off Bevan earlier in the innings then tried to claim the catch. Bevan stood his ground shaking his head. Replays clearly showed the ball rolling out of Harpers hands and hitting the ground. He knew he dropped the catch but claimed it anyway. Needless to say Bevan was given not out and ended up smashing him for four off the last ball to win the game. Stick that up your ass Roger Harper!!!
@Jhantor1987 I was 16 and living in Australia when this happened. I am Indian but fell in love with the Australian cricket team since 1998 and to present and future.
I remember being at a barbeque when this game was on, at the beginning of the Australian innings about 20 people were in the living room watching it. At 36/6 I was the only one, and I stuck with it till the end. When I went out and told everyone we had won there was just silence then many beers were drunk. Best post evveeerrr. Cricket sucks these days compared to this time.
i remember in my childhood when we used to play those weird cricket card games bevan used to have the highest batting average than any other player on the cards
He was the best player for any format of game. Far better than Sachin Tendulkar and who has most of his one day hundreds against minos. He was a genuine all rounder.
haha 173?! shows you how much has changed in recent times. 173 is par these days in 30 overs. Hell it's achievable in 20/20- smaller grounds these days I guess and falling standards in bowling.
Still, take nothing away from Bevan- what an incredible player he was!
Aah....the reaction to the victory was as cool as the winnings in itself..Just imagine if it was present day...the batsman would hav gone crazy and ran all over the place...the runner would go in some direction...whole team would run on to the ground and absolutely dont even think of the fact that some other team was playing the game as well..no complaints tho..victory is a victory and everyone has their own ways.. :)
i work with alot of indians and from their view, they all thought Bevan was a genius. They regarded him as the best player to come from Australia. Yet us aussies did them a favour and dropped him. Shame on us (Aussie cricket board)!!
@bevanheaven3398 umm awks for you , do you have evidence ?? no this video doesnt count because your not involved in it and how would i know what you look like???
Bevan was poorly treated by the selectors. He should have played more Test cricket than he did. The stuff about him not being able to play bouncers was exaggerated. I remember they wouldn't take Bevan to India (where they can't bowl bouncers) and instead took the young Ponting (who back then couldn't play spin).
this one guy at my school who was a good cricketer use to think bevan was a "selfish" player and it use to infuriate me, his argument was he played for 2's and singles and never hit boundaries < biggest wanker ever
anyway this innings and his innings of 105* i think it was were the best two games i ever did see so controled and measured.
am a pakistani, but i have always said that u cant compare any1 with bevan, hes the best 1 day player ever, i agree tendulkar n all hit 100s n stuff, but this guy knows how to play one day cricket! he cums for sum tym, n just wins it for you :S its insane how australia dropped HIM. simply the best player, he hardly used 2 get out.. n he knows how 2 keep the scorecard ticking without taking risks. he was unique, after him cum all the great players for me.
Bevan should never have to pay for a drink again after that. Julia Gillard should make it a law instead of wasting time on education and the economy. Sickening.
completely agree with u jamal. I believe he should have got the award for australias greatest ever one day player and not adam gilchrist. Don't get me wrong gilly was awesome but bevan was so consistent - scored a run a ball and saved australias bacon on so many occasions.
Australia wouldn't have been dominant in the 90's if it wasn't for Bevan. Inspired a lot more batsmen than of Gilchrist. Gilchrist only started to inspire toward the late 00's. So I agree
He was a great finisher. He used to bat at number 6 and used to remained not out. Though Australian top order batting line up was really good at that time.
SilviaTom23, exact same story as me except I was 12 at the time. Watching it today, was just as exciting as watching now! I still get goosebumps watching this.
Cant believe Australia booted him outta the team before his time. One of the greatest one day players in history was screwed by the Aussie cricket board.
Agreed. I think one of Bevans problems was he was seen only (and incorrectly) as a superlative finisher - and with Australia at the time totally dominating finishing wasn't needed. They could win by simply bludgening. Perhaps as well he came across as a measured humble person which didn't really fit with the Australian team ethos then which was brash to say the least. One of my favourite all time cricketers and it's criminal he wasn't picked more. Great role model too.
