Sometimes, American audiences are dullards. Why? This sketch was done on Saturday Night Live and barely a chuckle came from the live audience: despite everyone apparently familiar with Cleese & Palin. But the again the same crowd laughs at the most inane and essentially stupid attempts at feeble humor.
pining means: longing for the fjords. A fjord is kind of a glacier made rift starting from the coast line and extends the ocean narrowly inland. Fjords is not unique for Norway, it can also be found in alaska, canada and greenland among other places
LOL love how you people tries to describe a fjord! ;) I am from Norway.. and I can honestly tell you folks that a fjord is something of the most beatiful thing you will ever be able to see on this earth! :D
It is some sort of a river. A fjord is wider than a normal river. There can often sail several large fishing boats at the same time on the fjord and also ferries. So a sort of a very wide river with sea water and life from the sea in it.
- Will that explain it? The word "fjord" is scandinavian, and fjords only exists in Scandinavia.
- But in this case the sentence "pining for the fjords" is used to describe, how to convince a person, that the dead parrot, which seems to be dead, isn't dead.
I've LIVED this sketch. I once bought a parakeet, and it died exactly 12 hours later. I tried to take it back, they they said it was perfectly fine that morning, and I must have done something to it. After a few minutes of arguing, they let me have another parakeet.
its not pining, this parrot has passed on! its no more! its ceased to be! its expired and gone to be its maker! this is a late parrot! its a stiff knife, it rests in peace! if you hadent nailed it to the purch it would be pushing up the daisies!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!
Great that you included the complaints dept. part, it's so hilarious. The way Cleese says "The pet shop owner's brother was lying!" while they both look at the camera always makes me crack up!

Cleese looks so inbred and retarded! He proabably is both! Benny Hill was considered funnier than Monty Python by a UHF station (WLVI TV Channel 56 in Cambridge, Ma) running both! I agree! And combine "exodus" and "international" and ".org".
Ahh yes.....channel 56 is the ultimate authority on what's funny. Wait...didn't they become a CW affiliate? That speaks volumes about their decision making skills.
I bought a Monty Python double CD and the liner notes indicated that much of their comedy rose out of anger. Like the Cheese Shop sketch and the sketch of about the book buyer, you see the baffled rage and frustration of both buyer and vendor as they deal with difficult and unhelpful people, a situation many have found ourselves in. The Argument sketch has that same quality, wherein a complainant says "I didn't come here for an argument" and a wiseacre may reply "Where do you usually go, then?"

lol, Benny hill was just slapstick, you cant compare the combined genius of the Monty Python team with Benny Hill who ran around slapping bald men whilst being chased by buxom women in every episode!!
Back in the 1960's, when he was on the BBC, Benny Hill was a one-man Monty Python, combining his usual slapstick (albeit sans T&A) with biting social commentary. Take a look at his "The Lonely One" sketch from the 1964 edition of "Christmas Night with the Stars" and see what I mean. Beats the "Ethel the Frog" look at the Piranha brothers by a mile. And back when "Python" was first on the BBC, Hill consistently rated in the Top 10 whereas Python didn't even make the weekly Top 20 TV ratings once.

Very insignificant. We all know to please the masses the format has to be simple. For simple minds. It is the only way you can please so many minds. The inteligent mind seeks more and is a lot rarer. Look at the ratings pop idol, fame academy, coronation street recieve and then tell me if you still have a point.
Great bio the Benny Hill Story (with a flattering intro by mega-legendary comic Bob Hope) shows this of Benny Hill. Bio is by John Smith and the bio is for sale at amazon!

In that case they are spot on.
