  • Damn they are so much better live, more meat in their sound!!!

  • @Lukasoncapeta If you don't have it already, get the live recording called Live on the Queen Mary. It's insane, they are one of the original & greatest jam bands imho.

  • How can the people in the audience just be sitting there with their hands on their chins? Is it really possible to not bounce around uncontrollably to this?

  • @opaquiosq great musicians deserved to be watched!!

  • wow is that george porter jr? this is great.. art looks alot like his son ian in this.

God I ♥ NOLA

  • The Meters had the flavor of Swampy New Orleans Funk.

    ''I'M A JUNGLE MAN..THATS WHAT I' AM''

''I'M YOUR BOOGIE MAN, THATS WHAT I'AM''- KC and The Sunshine band

  • I like the organ players pimp ring.

  • good that

  • Ziggy's the MAN!

  • i love this band!! so funky fresh and clean !! must be hard playing for an all white crowd who sits and stares. i mean the band cant even tell if theyre digging it, a good show is where people give back to the band by showing their appreciation by groovin

  • How are the aduance sitting down?

  • @tinyEPICs ya seriously, wtf... i dont get white people they just sit and stare like its a puzzle.

  • @tinyEPICs On the floor in front mosh-pit style

  • @yourunclehank1 Well they are standing and moving but I would expect a little grooving.

  • @tinyEPICs The show appears to be more of

a small concert type setting instead of say Soul

Train or American Bandstand. That might be why

people are just chillin and listening

  • way cool song, and group- the toss the congas, they are over the top

  • Droppin serious music!!!! Thanks for posting this!!!!

  • Parliament is great, but they alway sound like they're trying to be funky. The Meters always sound like they'd be confused if you asked them to play it straight.

  • @fastrnb yes yes YES

  • Like Buddy Guy usually tells his band: "Play it so funky they can smell it."

  • LETS MOVE´IN!!! LETS DANCE! formidable! groovyyyy

  • The greatest funk band of all time.

  • Cheese,

    Right Here, Right Now,

    Lets Here It,

    Never Give Up.

    KM

  • The Cheese!

    Ouch'

    Right Here!

    Lets Here It!

    Never Give Up!

  • Quite possibly the most underrated group ever!

  • I need mouth to mouth, Haaaaay.

George Porter is dreaming. He's the shit.

The Meters are a Totem of funk with James Brown, the JB's, Parliament Funkadelic. Macon, New Orleans.

    gfg

  • It's New Orleans guys!!!!!!

  • @professor501 "$!""%/$%/%&(&/THGfvsdjchiwuwjnkqnq3uhqjnd

  • As greasy as it gets.

  • very nice dog gone 'outfit', as in group, as in dang they gettin' fluid.

  • hell yeah!

  • percussionist means the conga player here, I think he's killin the groove too

  • I really believe the percussionist is fab. This performance is brilliant!

  • it was the freakin 70's!! percussionist was prolly on acid. And so what???!

  • pôôôô, isso é coisa pra galera ver sentadinhaaaaa?

  • Damn this is funky

  • Good stuff! !

  • songs cool man

  • For some strange reason i thought the meters were white!!

  • Im pretty sure that "the Meters' have more white guys these days. The organist is still with them. but the two guitarists are white, i believe. they still kick ass.

  • @thewinebottle .......joking ? . . . . couldn't possib...well ,anythings possible... and half of the MGs were white ,BUT that was only half & even that was not to be expected.

I can't think of any reason that anyone could hear The Meters & assume "Oh, these guys are white." HA! Laugh Out f-ing Loud. That is funny ! i love it . . . . If U are serious I'd love to know if you figure out how/why you thought that The Meters were white . (!?)

  • @godhelpme2009 I used to confused them with the melvins...i think thats the reason

  • @thewinebottle Thanks for replying.Yeah, as i was typing my reply/question to U it did occur to me that it may have just been a word/language confusion, rather than hearing them & thinking they were white. But i was having too much fun thinking about someone thinking they sounded "white" to get into that language side b/c that mix-up just wasn't as entertaining . Thanks again. Now i wanna listen to The Melvins, but i am too busy listening to the amazing Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band

  • Thanks for posting this. It's a gem. Dr. John, The Meters, Professor Longhair, etc. This is the music right from the birthplace of American music, New Orleans!

  • Someone shoot the bongoman quick! He's just messing up all over the funk.

  • That's Cyril Neville, and he was in the band at that point. Cyril laid down some great funk with Zigaboo, and brought in serious soul on the vocals.

  • I was thinking the same thing. There's nothing worse than a percussionist that can't control himself. They just don't realize it's not about them and it's not about how many fast notes you can squeeze in. Totally the opposite of the feel Zig has.

  • F-O-N-Q-U-E.

  • That single telecaster bass sounds greasy- yeah I can smell the funk!

  • Ohhhh, that is funnnkay....mmm!

  • This was first as it was shot I believe in 73, 74. I'm your Boogie Man came out around I believe 76.

  • Serve me up some Neck Bones and Home fries.

  • Best funk band ever. No doubt whatsoever. Thanks so much Zigaboo for your funky funky beats, I am continuously inspired by your rhythms. Please come and play in Australia some time!

  • the meters is one the greatest bands that ever existed...if like them you should check out the poets of rhythm and the bamboos...parliments good but the meters are on another planet themselves.....

  • @dangalow I love the poets and the bamboos!

  • @dangalow Yeah they are (on anouther planet)--their on PFUNK!

  • @dangalow . The New Mastersounds are pretty badass too!!

  • great funk!

  • The second song they're singing..could that be where KC & the Sunshine band got I'm your boogie man from..hmmm

  • Wow...good call. Who was first, that is, when was this video shot?

  • I can smell the funk all the way from over here! You've got to love the 70's for this kinda thang, bro.

  • oh yes sound like my old band esposito, or should i say we sounded like these dewds:)

  • Yum!

  • Zigabo is KILLEN

  • i can feel the smell of the funk

  • I am trying to decide if I want the blue ring on the hammond, the white suit or the conga drums to augment my image toward being cool. A performance that pours out the energy like this is always rewarding.

  • de bons musiciens.

  • PRIIIIIME. Nothing beats this. So damn funky

  • It would seem that from this clip, Zigaboo has one of the earliest known remote hi-hat set ups.

  • what's that

  • Remote hi-hats are just when the there is another hi-hat set up in a different part of the kit.. It is sort of common place to see them on some drum kits nowdays (not so much back then).

  • The Meters are still kickin it! Funny, but even back in those days the TV execswouldn't let anyone in the audience but stale, whitebread mopes. Look at em all sitting on their hands!

  • thats just how it used to be. watch any old band from the 70s. Hendrix, Deep Purple are two that ive watched where the audience sits down lol

  • could be that they're stoned out of their minds

  • he uses a B3 organ right?

  • Yes that is a Hammond B3 w/ Leslie

  • the meter's ziggy the funkiest drummer of all time check out my channel for more funk

  • funk soul brotha

  • As deep as funk gets. This music is so hypnotically rhythmic.

  • Funky, funky, funky! The Meters are the best. Art, Leo, George, Zigaboo, and Cyril can make you bust your rump.

  • wonderful! i got their first two albums and it plays here again and again...fantastic band, thx for possibility to see them!

  • God-daaaaaaaaaaamn.

That Jungle Man track is FUNKY!

  • Meters are the greatest band ever!!!

    Yes ever

  • Oh maaaaaan, this is too much! Dig it the most baby! There is just no way I could have stayed sat on my ass during this! Unless the entire audience is whacked out on really string weed; check out the dude with glasses and moustache at 6:21, looks like a stoner to me... ;)

  • If you guys like this check out Papa Baloo

  • yo man

  • Evry member of this ensemble is a funk genius!Love it!

  • yeh. The colors of the camera´s and the "dead" audience. I think they´re performing in germany.

I´m also german but i hate it when people just sitting on their ass during such a groovy band performing their songs

  • Don't worry. This gig was done in New Orleans year 1966. And still they all stood still. Eh?

  • OOOOHHHHH YEAH!!! Grooovy as fuck..

  • i don't think there funky i think there goovey man

  • is that audience dead, or what? jeebus, how could they just SIT there?

  • probably German ;-)

  • hahahaahahahah

  • help me jeebus!!

  • The subtitles at 2:33 would seem to indicate that it was recorded in an Asian country. Sorry, but I've no idea where. Any ideas, folks?

  • ziggy and george, the best man. true, I could listen without the congas but its all good still sounds great.

  • Man, what the fuck is that click-clock about?!?

In my favorite drum part!! (2:16)

  • I dunno , but the breakdown and the name Look-a-py-py , are about the sound their old van used to make going down the road , and they wrote it singing allong to it...Fonky... as Mac would say

  • It´s amazing how funky this band is!!!

Thanks to the uploader for posting.

Thanks to the band for performing

    ;)

  • Yeah, the congas are really annoying, seems like hes just trying to show off instead of fit in. And plus the meters have a lot of space in their grooves and he just ruins that effect. But everything else is sweeeet

  • nice vintage Meters!!!!! Thanks for posting.... Gotta love the FUNK!!!!

  • UNBELIEVABLE!! The Meters are Funk Gods!!

  • omg the meters thank you so much for existing... no words just.. thank you..

  • Jungle man sounds alot like Boogie man by KC and the Sunshine band.

  • I think its okay. Maybe they should just had the congas down a bit in the beginning.

  • the world needs more congas man lol

  • Love this sound! Took a video last night of a gr8 band that did an amazing funk piece but it won't upload to you tube. Oh well. Love all the instruments represented here - and the beat. Again, great sound

  • FUNK IS INMORTAL!

  • I think we are only starting to scratch the surface with regards to how much this band influenced contemporary music.

  • indeed, it's always too late when we realise.

  • ZIG IS GOD!

  • Bubonik Funk has a lot of Meters influence in their stuff.

  • This is KICKASS!

  • Great playing, huge grooves from the undisputed Forefathers of N'awlins Funk!

  • The greatest funk band (in my very humble opinion). This is the real deal.

  • best bass player alive gp

  • ah man can't get enough of this video, love the meters, could anyone recommend any other underrated-type funk groups or any new good funk players around....? none that i've found come close to this band..

  • papa grows funk dumpstaphunk radiators

  • Cant go wrong with Stanton Moore and Galactic

  • Soulive and Lettuce are both amazing. They share a couple of members.

  • It's hard to find, but you might check out a band called the Daktaris on Desco Records. Also the JBs,who were James Browns backup band recorded some great stuff.I have to agree,though-the Meters were IT!

  • It's tough to say what is "underrated", but my personal favorite "underrated" album is "Maceo and All The King's Men"'s "Doin' Their Thang"--search youtube for "funky women".

  • That transfer between songs might be the funkiest moment in music history.

  • That bongo player is ruining the song!! He's covering up all Zigaboo's marvelous stop-and-stuff stuff that made the original Meters the BEST. Noooooo. Where's the trap door?

  • ok... first of all, they are called "congas" NOT "bongos". Secondly... that is Cyril Neville (you know... one of "The Neville Brothers"?) who was a permanent member of the Meters for a great part of their existence.

Thirdly, after viewing your profile, I'd like to tell you that the Meters just aren't for you. Please spare us your inane comments. That is all... thank you.

  • OK, congas. Didn't know that was Cyril. But they still sound NOT GOOD. What's the point of funk if you've got this loud, nonstop conga stuff? As for the ad hominem attacks, I'm from and live in New Orleans. Funk is in my blood. Maybe Cyril was high; he sucks here.

  • could not have put it better myself. Thanks for dropping that fool off B

  • This is the funkiest funk ever created..

    Totally übergeschnappt...

  • Where the hell is Leo? Dumb ass camera people sure got enough shots of the plants! And people sittin' on they're asses in the crowd! How do you sit still watching the Meters?!
