This is like the most interesting thing I've ever listened to. What a story and a history! I could listen to stories like this all day long. And by the way, I soooo dug your Crazy Train solo (on another youtube vid). I
@RachelBartonPine That's one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed for the violin and orchestra! I would love to hear you play it! Please let me know where I can find tour dates and locations to hear you play, thank you!

Fine violinist and beautiful playing, unfortunately her historical background regarding the numbers of surviving Strad and del Gesu instruments is greatly exaggerated and incorrect. Maria Soldat, the ex-owner of this fine violin, picked this instrument with her teacher Joachim's help, who, in his life time, has played and owned several Stradivarius and Guaneri del Gesu violins.
O'Connor does have a VERY good violin. I played in an orchestra behind him a couple years ago. He plays a Vuillaume set up with gut strings. He also has a very unusual bow grip with his thumb UNDER the frog. He was fun to play and rehearse with and was very willing to talk to us in the orchestra, which is why I happen to know these little factoids.
I think the rich deep tone of that fiddle suits her style of play perfectly she has a very robust and powerful sound. You hear some soloist sort of squash the sound when they play aggressively, especially on Strads.
Lol she's such a cracker. Guarneris are much better than strads in my opinion, I love the sound they make. Like she said, great violinists like Paganini, Heifetz, Kreisler, Menuhin, and Szeryng all preferred del Gesus... I wish I had one lol.
There are more than 40 of them. Cozio lists at least 187 Guarneri Del Gesu. Also, the same site only tracks 308 strads; although there could be more. All of the players Mz. Pine mentio, Sophie-Mutter, Perlman, Pagannini, Stern, heifetz, and kreisler all played both Strads and Del Gesus. Currently Perlman and i believe Mutter owns both Strad and Guarneri.
She said Heifetz played del Gesu? He played the Strad!!

Strads can sound a bit "tinny".
Guarneri's can sound very lush and rich like chocolate!

This was before a Milwaukee Symphony concert ... I would've loved to have been in attendance. What piece(s) did you play?
ThaSchwab 3 years ago
Bruch's Scottish Fantasy
RachelBartonPine 2 years ago
Yeah, I read about it not too long after I asked the question. Would've loved to have been at the performance.

they are both great makers obviously. . . it really depends what characteristics you look for in the instrument.
