7x-4(3x+2)=7

he multiplied the 4 with the numbers in parenthesis:3x times -4= -12x and -4 times 2=-8

that's how he got the 8

@ZombieKillerNova Blame the teacher not yourself. The teacher should have explained it to the point where everyone in the class understands. A couple of kids in my class just sit there either chatting it up, or staring down at their blank piece of paper. This is unacceptable considering when test time comes no one has a clue what to do so they bring in their parents bitching about how they didn't teach this or that. If teachers did their job and actually TAUGHT the world would be a better place.

his goal was to isolate the variable 'x' on the left side of the equation.

the reason he added 8 is because the equation read -5x-8=7, and he wanted to remove the -8 from the left side of the equation. In order to remove the -8, he added 8, because -8+8=0, and so the -8 was canceled out.

Having added 8 to one side, he had to add it to the other side of the equation, because if he did not do this, he would change the balance of the equation he began with, in effect, making it different.

its so that he can cancel out the negative eight. you have to do that to understand the variable. you just take the number without a variable and add or subtract the opposite of it (in this case it was negative eight plus eight to get zero.) you have to get zero for the number without a variable.
