Interesting debate about response levels. Given the speed at which fires grow, a strong initial response is the only prudent response. Yes, most calls are false alarms, but that's the way it goes. One way to reduce costs is to have the business or alarm company notify dispatch if it is a false alarm and then response can be reduced to one unit to verify. That has worked here in Columbia, SC.
Well said. Ive been on HUNDREDS of "false alarm" automatic fire alarm calls. Ive also been to 2 working fires that came in as automatic alarms. My FD sends 3 Engines, 1 Truck, 1 Rescue and a Dep Chief on all automatic alarm calls.
Yea, that's similar to what we do here in Topeka. Except, all trucks run hot but first on scene investigates while all others stage, so a fairly similar concept there.
Fire doubles in size every 30 seconds. You send everything, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Having units on standby at the station while a single unit goes to investigate would leave many structures burned to the ground.
thats standard dude. the station may not have a medic/ambo to respond with, this one does, but depending on the department its 3 engines 2 trucks 1 spec service, normally a squad, 1-3 medics/ambos and a million chiefs
My department responds 1 Chief, 1 Engine, 1 Truck to all single family residential AFA calls and 1 Chief, 2 Engines, 1 Rescue and 1 Truck to all commercial and multi-family/high occupancy AFAs. No EMS units are dispatched. We're an ISO Class 1 department.
Correct. We're listed/traded on NASDAQ and are contracted with the County and City (and other communities across the US and Canada) to provide emergency services to the public within their geographic areas.
Damn...empty the house lol. The EQ2B has got 2 go. I wonder why so many departments have switched 2 the EQ2B...around here, you don't hear nothing but the classic Q....thank God. Anyway, this is a great vid, I love seeing the firehouse cleared and Q's screamin'!!
In my town of twin Falls , Idaho . We have a small paid department of 36 men . On all fire calls , all 3 engines one from each station goes with the battalion cheif . Extra off duty firefighters are called in to man and respond with extra apparatus , be it both tanker/tenders , the rescue unit , or the platform tower . A paramedic rig from the local hospital is automatically dispatched as well .
San Francisco FD has quite a response for initial alarms or "boxes" . They send 4 engine companies , 2 truck companies , a medic unit , battalion cheif , division cheif , and a heavy rescue squad if the incident is in or near the downtown area . On the second alarm , they send 3 engine companies , 2 truck companies , a medic unit , 2 battalion cheifs , a mobile air squad ,and a rescue captain .
Gosh I wish I had digital...I think with those you can listen to everything. NWCD for 1. I just heard one sentence on that frequency I mentioned above "ambulance 11 back at quarters" Nothin Special lol
Really Cool! Do you use analog radios at all anymore? I was gave a scanner and I found one analog frequency 154.20500 under Mt.prospect Fire Is it used anymore? Could you leave me a message. Do you know of any other cool local analog frequency's?
all that for a fire alarm, are standart is 2 engines and a ladder if we can even get that to get on scene before cancelling it all because it was just a alarm malfuntion
so whats the big deal? better to have it on the way and not needed it then get there and then needing it and it probably being between 4 and 8 minutes out. Plus you roll 3 trucks they rolled 3 trucks and an ambulance...seems about equal to me =P
haha, yeah, i live in a suburb of chicago and i saw it the day it went into service. i'm hearing 2 different things, some people say 5-1-1 is slightly bigger than 5-1-2? is that true? but anyway, 5-1-1 is massive! what houses are they at...i forgot?
5-1-1 is at eng 22's house w/ambo 43 and 6-2-4 over in lincoln park, 605 W Armitage. 5-1-2 is at eng 60's house w/ tower ladder 37, ambo 38, Batt Chief 17 in Hyde park, 1150 E 55th St. not sure if one is larger than the other. (it wouldnt be a big noticable size difference)
They are the same trucks 5-1-2 is on the south side 5-1-1 is on the north side tower ladder 10 use to have the same trucks as TL37&TL21 does anyone remember that? Until it got replaced.
an engine has the water and handlines. ect. a truck has the big ladder on top which can reach aprox. 100 feet in the air. SCBA stands for Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. (Air Pack) used to breath while inside of a structure fire. Thanks For Commenting and Asking Questions.
Thanks. Yes and My Brothers Girlfriend. He Was Getting Sworn In At That Dept. As A Full Time Firefighter That Day. It Just So Happened They Got A Call But He Didnt End Up Going.
Those Yellow Hoses Are Exaust Hoses. They Are Called Plymovents. What It Is, They Hook Up To The Exaust Pipe And When The Engine Turns On, The Plymovent Starts Up And Suctions The Exaust Up Through The Hose, And Through A Filtering System. It Follows The Apparatus Down A Track And Then Comes Off At The End Of The Bay.
So many sexy Q sirens :) that's not overkill. In this business, it's always better to have more than not enough.

No, thats why you have $800,000 vehicles getting damaged chasing Fire Alarms & EMS calls! Overkill and it takes unit oos for other calls.
