I'm Anita in my school's production of West Side Story... I love the boy/girl version of America better than the girl/girl version... But definately not this particular performance. It's way too fast, and the actors sound like their just shouting, not singing.

We're doing this at my local theatre, I really hope they do this version of America instead of the all-girl version. It's what made the song and the MOVIE so popular! It shows that the Puerto Rican kids are flirtatious and actually loving which, I agree with SiloliWolfeden, makes Bernardo's death more devastating.

It's really much better with the boys, actually - it boosts it up over the top of awesomeness! Plus it shows us more of the relationship between Bernardo and Anita, which makes Bernardo's death triple heartbreaking.

I must say that this is very impressive! Yes, it's not true to the play and it's the movie staging having the boys with the girls,but this is what people,especially kids know and it's what they want to do! When you have dancers like this,take advantage!

Actually there are two verisons of this song for the stage verison one is all girls, than the Guys and girls song.

No matter how illegal this is... this is how the song should be done. The Shark boys have NO part in this show, and when you're a Shark boy who is mainly a singer and NOT getting paid to do nothing... this number is perfect. It should be allowed to be substituted.

I'm conducting West Side Story currently, and the Bernstein estate is VERY strict about the script and score. You are not allowed to use anything from the movie in the stage version. So really, this is just illegal. Broadway I'm sure could work something out, but just any production anywhere doesn't get special privileges from them......

One of the many many reasons why copyright needs to be reformed ASAP. People should get money from their own work, and maybe that of their parents for some time after their death (considerably less than 70 yearsm, btw), but when heirs and corporate "owners" and their lawyers want to have a say in what is performed and how, this is censorship that should not be allowed at all.
