(Jean).
This is just MY opinion....No doubt that Tommy and Jimi totally different styles but don't forget Tommy plays a solid body electric too!.. Love Eric Clapton and my all time favorite rock blues player... I am just stating what I have experienced and that is Tommy Emmanuel the best and most talnted I have ever heard!.. Believe me, many guitar players and great ones, who have seen him, say the same thing!..
I have to say that not even the original version sung by such giants as Nat King Cole and Dean Martin reach the same level of emotion and power as does Tommy Emmanuel. That's saying something.
@AndreasSku93 you are right you can't compare the 2. TE would blow Hendrix out of the water. Hendrix was very original. He could not do half of what TE can do
@richiemabie Music is not about what you can do, it's about what you make with what you can do. Besides, JH could do stuff Tommy Emmanuel and countless other guitarists never would have thought of on their own. Seriously you should dig deeper into Hendrix, as a guitarist myself it took a little while to realize how amazing he actually is. But let's not compare guitarists, it's ridiculous.. Tommy Emmanuel is great, seeing him live is an experience for life!
SO!!!...I am not alone!Whereas Emmanuel(love those videos)is a marvelous EMULATOR...Hendrix is the most astounding INNOVATOR since the Beatles.A massive,MASSIVE milestone in the history of the universe...They created something out of nothing. When I first heard 'Are You Experienced' it revealed a world of guitar playing I could not imagine...then Axis..the intro to 'Little Wing' and 'Castles Made of Sand'.....then came "Ladyland'!!!Shattering, inexplicable (as you say)genius.
@tony9L9L Probabably the same as the vast majority of guitar manufacturers who put white dots on a black fretboard....so you can see them more easily in the dark..LOL.WHERE TF did that comment come from???TeeHee,

@ToneDeafecation Have you managed to work out why Jimi Hendrix was so far beyond every other guitar player? I can't explain it and I've been thinking about it for years.
@tony9L9L The 'Tommy and Hendrix' issue is something i've been interested in for a long time.. They're styles seem to be avoiding eachother for some reason... A paradox if you will.. :)
@Firestoner46 With the greatest respect for Tommy, I am always impressed by his technical skills and agility like watching a great gymnast but his music doesn't make me cry or want to dance. Does he sacrifice feeling for extraordinary dexterity? When I listen to Jimi I just want to go and fuck my woman.
yeah I have been thinking the same. that is a question that I would like to know Tommy's answer to. I have heard him say SRV is his favourite blues player and is for me, one of the closest to hendrix for electric blues
@sightsizemethod Oh no not srv, he was just a fancy dress tribute act who insulted Hendrix's legacy with his joke parody performances. Why would anyone listen to the man who put the 'ass' in 'Texass' when theres so many better people to listen to? Stick to Jimi- the real deal, the incomparable Seattle maestro.

Thanks for tipping me off Heikkipajunen, My attempts to make a jewellery box out of my guitars didn't go too well, but i'll find something, train spotting maybe.
Another big factor why Tommy is so great is his presence and ability to detach himself from the whole situation of fingerstyle which is already independant within itself!. Most every guitarist Brent Mason. Pat Metheny Doyle Dykes even within their greatness have to concentrate quite a bit just to stay in the pocket of their playing. Tommy somehow so aware looking around while even poking innocent fun while in the jam. Such control.
@halfhott No I'm saying for Tommy its not even an issue to have a full conversation or poke fun while playing intricate guitar where others seem to be annoyed or have to concentrate harder to play intricate guitar.
There are lots of tabs out there for this song, but most of them are incomplete or contain errors. If you are serious about learning, you can get the official transcriptions on Tommy's website (for sale). They are quality publicatons and you can be sure they are the original arrangement and not some internet douchebag's shotty attempt. To neggy's comment, yes it is possible to learn it from tab. I use tab in conjunction with Guitar Pro (software) to help work out the timing. Hope that helps.

Go to 1:00. Not only is that out of this world technically stupendously difficult to pull off...the man looks at someone (a non-beleiver maybe?) and makes sure they are sufficiently gob-smacked. He even times the string flip with his plectrum perfectly for emphasis!!! The man should be considered both Australia's Greatest Export and Talent....ever. Any idea how many people have played the guitar throughout history?...this man is better.
@Sirbrooksalot I said hes playing lead, rhythm and bass at the same time, like Jimi did. Thats what Jimi did, Jimi didn't play fingerstyle in that way but Jimi did all three at once too.
@skint0n0minted yeah, but he didn't.. lol, dont get me wrong, as a guitarist, I idolize Jimi, but to compare him to Emmanuel is to compare apples to oranges.
This is from his DVD "Live at Sheldon Hall" c.2000, absolutely the best representation of his work to that point and still maybe until now. It's the best $40 I ever spent.
Absolutely INCREDIBLE! I have been playing guitar for 40 years, and just now found this guy! Tommy you are amazing!! thanks for the lessons in Up Close. I'm miles and miles and miles behind ya, but just trying to follow at least 1 footstep.
This was filmed at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis (not sure what year). The acoustics in that hall are amazing!, but Tommy sounds great wherever he plays. I got tickets to his show on October 8th and can't wait. Does anyone know if Tommy signs Martin guitars or just people with Matons?
Hey men, this is the greatest acoustic guitarist and entertainer of all time! Surely Andy Mc Kee is a great, but I can't imagine one hour and half of concert with him only! What a bore! There's no match with Tommy....
ur so rite, an theirs a very small population of tommy emanuel lovers in Ireland, its so cool, nearly no one knows him, BUT every one gets blown away by him.
Dont compare between tommy and andy..andy is till in the begning of the road and yes i like andy and i listen to his music but hard to leave tommy to hear another guitarist..even he is going to just talk and not gonna play,we still gonna watch lol
As talented as Andy is, I think he lacks the passion, emotion and FUN that Emmanuel puts into his playing. Although Andy does compose his own stuff it sounds a bit too technical to be music to me... I mean I do watch his videos in utter awe and admire his abilities as a guitarist, but they just don't compare imo.
@jysniper his brother might be hehe :) phil is every bit as good a guitarist as tommy is, both in terms of technique and body of work... he just hasn't done as much visible work, sticking instead to the underground blues and rock scene.
back home, tommy would play the bigger stadiums in town and phil would be playing down at the corner pub! love them both though - absolute legends!
No solo piano player, orchestra, horn section,or any musical instrument or musician can ever surpass "One Man 1 Acoustic Guitar playing solo fingerstyle",NOTHING inexsistance even come close,Nothing!!!!!
His tiny clams are better than all my years of good guitar playing!
My take on this video is, he looks like he just felt like altering his fills, which didn't work out 100%. I must say, though, in great Tommy fashion, he showed us what an incredible guitarist he is by completing the song without missing a single beat, and maintained his usual unwaivering upbeat attitude.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
there are alot of mistakes i think but still man this is awesome ......... if only he would slow it down a little more and i might be able to see (not play) all the tricky parts he's doing ..... We're not worthy, we're not worthy

I agree. Andy McKee is musical genius, but listening to his playing makes me mentally tired. Listenning to Tommy makes me refreshed and joyfull.

His tiny clams are better than all my years of good guitar playing!
My take on this video is, he looks like he just felt like altering his fills, which didn't work out 100%. I must say, though, in great Tommy fashion, he showed us what an incredible guitarist he is by completing the song without missing a single beat, and maintained his usual unwaivering upbeat attitude.

there are alot of mistakes i think but still man this is awesome ......... if only he would slow it down a little more and i might be able to see (not play) all the tricky parts he's doing ..... We're not worthy, we're not worthy
