First let me ask you what do you expect from a martial art? Do you want to learn self defense or to learn how to win competitions like the UFC or the Olympics?
I too wanted to learn a martial art for self defence. I studied somewhat traditional Japanese jujitsu (Danzan Ryu Jujitsu) and liked it. However my friend and I always thought, "gee my girlfriend/sister/mom isn't strong enough to do some of these moves."
I much later began studying aikido, and there are lots of girls in the class that are alot smaller than me and especially smaller than the biggest guys in the class. These girls can and do kick our asses twice a week. My point is for self defence I highly recomend either aikido or a traditional jujutsu, especially aikido because a real test of how effective a martial art is how well someone with an obvious strength disadvantage can handle a life or death situation.
the whole point of aikido is to not get hit. if you throw a punch at me and i catch it, your arm is broken. if i miss it and get hit in the face and end up on the ground with you on top of me, well i guess i'd try to either claw your eyes out or punch you in the throat. maybe hope my buddy is around to hit you on the back of the head with a beer bottle.
who are you kidding? all the ufc's and mma's etc.. never seen an aikido guy win. Don't know that any of them incorporate aikido and practice either as part of their cross training. No, aikido is nice aethetics and spirituality but not for the street

does a double leg take down
gets mount beats the crap out of you
you turn over to stop getting hit
he gets the back with his hooks in
and rear nakeds you until you pass out
then what is aikido gonna do

brazillian JiuJitsu takes these guys out. It looks nice but in a real situation does it work?

Oh i dont thin so. I have seen an aikido vs bjj. And the aikido guy won. So Bjj can win over kung fu and karate maybe but not aginsed an aikidoka.
