  • This was one of very few games I bought with my own money back in the day. I loved it and still do play it.

  • Somebody converted this game to flash and I played it

  • Wow- I made that last comment about the music before hearing you say that you didn't really rate the music in this game as highly as the original's. In my opinion the music is a LOT better in this game than in the original! But each to their own, Steve. :)

  • This game had some of the best music on the Mega Drive and, by definition, some of the best video game music of all time.

  • Love RR played the 3do version to death, we need a revised version with online play.

  • Definately my favourite series on the megadrive!!! I love the 1 st one the best too for it's music

  • I have seen WW 2 motorcycle combat sequences in games like the older Call of Duty 3,etc.

A game that is totally based on that concept might do pretty well-I would buy it at least.

    Entertained by your work-as always!

  • 1st place?

    does not compute

  • @ReplayRetro It's witchcraft... or something ;)

  • The most fun I have with this game is by using the 'Wild Thing' bike. It's an insanely fast bike with unlimited nitro boosts! I'll put a video response on of my Wild Thing vid :)

  • another great piece entertainment steve now make part 6 of a game on the dreamcast

  • @theg00dnamesg0ne Soon :)

  • @SteveBenway oh steve you are a tease

  • Great video as always. Have you tried "Skitchin" on the Genesis? EA used the same engine and made an in-line skating game but despite how that sounds, it plays a lot like Road Rash. It's worth checking out if you haven't played it.

  • @dream97 I've seen Skitchin, but for some reason it doesn't hit the right buttons for me. I couldn't even say why.

  • classic game, used to play this all the time back in the day

  • I've seen a few videos on YouTube about these licensed MegaDrive replicas and a lot of them seem pretty lacks, I don't know why they make them because it's not hard to find a second hand MegaDrive on eBay, and for those of you who have a Wii you can of course download some MegaDrive games on that. I guess the reason why they make these things is for the nostalgia factor.

  • @Lachlant1984 It's a good question... I'm not entirely sure why they make them, or why people buy them. Maybe it's that very pointlessness that makes them interesting.

  • Fantastic game, I agree with the music on RR1, it was incredible, but RR2 had two player support, which was the big attraction.

  • Japanese army had no motorbikes in WW2. They used pedal bicycles to conquer South East Asia.

  • @edwardszzz It's true, but why let historical accuracy get in the way of a silly one liner? :)

  • steve yer a road rash god

  • @murrayefc78 LOL :D

  • Loved this game, even if it was as just a full priced slight upgrade to the 1st. I think the Playstation had the 3DO version with some real nasty load times.

  • What's this? Steve winning a race? I think I'll buy a lottery ticket!

  • @GT3x24x7 Haha! Sounds like a plan :D

  • All time classic.

  • @28steryan Absolutely :D

  • If you would rather a version the same size as this but with the proper inners of a Megadrive so you get the proper sound I guess the one for you to get is the Megadrive 3 but that is very rare. I've only seen one once in google images and the rest were import Genesis 3 versions.

  • @wrestletube1 I remember the Megadrive 3. I saw it in an indoor market in Milton Keynes, branded as a Scorpion, for reasons I couldn't figure out at all.

  • Am I the only person that has played the 16-Bit version on the SEGA CD of Road Rash CD?

Granted it was on an emulator but it was just as awesome as the 24-Bit variations in gameplay just in the 2.5D perspective of these.

  • This is good and all, but ever since the first time I played Road Rash 32-bit on the 3DO, there was simply no going back. The 3DO/PS1 versions to me totally overshadowed the games on the Genesis. I'm all for old stuff, that much is clear. But sometimes the new stuff actually does it's job and is better in every way over the old stuff unlike so many games today.

  • @OldsXCool The 3DO version is certainly the best by far, but I still enjoy the 16 bit versions too :)

  • This is AWESOME to see again!! Love to see the old road rash games again, fantastic stuff! always love how when your guy gets hit he goes flying a thousand feet, gets back up, and runs back to his bike lol. chainsaw on a motorcycle haha, yeah, that would be safe. Splatter house and road rash combination, that could work well I think.

  • @lukemorse1 A lot of people complain about how far your guy has to run to get back on his bike, but like yourself, I like that aspect of the game :)

  • I wish EA would revive this franchise it was fantastic. RR2 was of of the last game from the old EA era when they were good. I did like the way Rob Hubbard re-worked the title theme for this and it sounded similar to the original. I did enjoy this game and IIRC didn't this version have a 2-player option? I agree the in-game music was a bit of a let down but the gameplay was fantastic and they added new weapons. Happy days.

  • @DLiberator78 There is indeed a 2 player game on this, though I haven't tried it yet :)

  • God she's ugly... LOL

  • @lilacfloyd One of those Benway moments where whatever is in my head is out of my mouth before I even think about it :D

  • Road Rash is a classic i dont know why EA dont do a new one i would buy it.

I had it on the Playstion its the same as the 3DO from what ive seen of the video you have got on here.

  • You should get one of the Turrican's, especially Turrican 2. I would love to see what you make of it. You will want the Atari ST, Amiga, C64 or ZX Spectrum versions. The Amiga version is the best. I have the ST versions.

  • Sure they had motorbikes like that in WWII, Montgomery and Churchill used to race each other bashing Nazis with clubs. That is the image that came into my head.

  • @DemonOfGaming LOL. Inside your head sounds like a fun place to be :D

  • I saw MN12BIRD's review of the original Road Rash on Genesis and the music on that game was just incredible, This game's music pales in comparison but you are absolutely right, Road Rash is Road Rash and this one still looks awesome.

Ironically I hate most racing games but for some reason, Road Rash has always entertained me....must be the combat racing. My favourite is the 3DO game but like you said, who would expect the Megadrive version to compete with that? Great vid Steve =)

    Dan.

  • @DansGameCorner There's definitely something that sets this apart from other 16 bit racers, and for me, it's the way the road is constructed. It's actually using real 3D geometry. It probably accounts for the less than impressive framerate, but the trade off is worth it.

  • Great game to showcase matey :)

  • @XFile2708 Cheers Marcus :)

  • I always liked this game a mate had it on the megadrive i always thought it was a great games console .

  • One of my favorite Genesis/Megadrive games of all time!!!

  • Now, THIS is a great game.

I was always partial to the Master System port of the original as it is an amazing port job that has a strange laid back feel to it whereby you feel more comfortable hanging back a little to line up a shot and kick some bloke into oncoming traffic.

I've never understood why EA are so keen on releasing yearly titles for Madden and every other one of their franchises, yet leave their best original IP go to waste after a few shitty 3D games.

  • @Quimbyrbg EA talk about not rehashing old IP unless they have something new to bring to it. Clearly that's BS, given, as you said, that they keep rehashing Madden and the like. I can't think of a real reason why they don't do it.

  • @SteveBenway Reading a few of the comments on here it is clear that a revisit to the franchise would be a fairly safe bet.

I've always thought, if you can't do a good 3D version of it, then go and make a friggin' awesome 2D version with pixel perfect sprite scaling, tons of tracks and bikes, and a good Gran Turismo-esque campaign mode and then release it via digital distribution as the ultimate fan service game.

EA has $ signs in their eyes and that must make it hard to see properly sometimes.

  • where did you get this console and whats it call, i want to get one :)

  • @elspuddy It's an ATGames Blaze, branded as a Sega Mega Drive. It has 10 games built in, and can take standard carts too. They can be found pretty easily, brean new on ebay, and probably on Amazon too. A 2nd hand genuine Mega Drive would probably be just as cheap though, and better quality... just without the built in games.

  • First place, where is the real SteveBenway and what have you done with him?

  • @MrStephen182 He's locked in the wardrobe ;)

  • one of my all time fave megadrive games, love to see this remade and have some online carnage lol

  • that white line would do my head in, i'd always think there was a car coming!

  • @DubSe7en I kept thinking it was a road junction.

  • Yeah clone systems, it baffles me that they can't replicate them perfectly, it doesn't help that many people have a distaste for the Mega Drive sound chip so any inaccuracy in the clone only makes this issue worse. Whenever I play Road Rash I keep wondering why GTA games never included motorbike melee moves, chainsaw yes please. Yes the scaling is quite smooth, just shows that if you don't have the hardware write a software renderer instead. Excellent showcase Mr. Benway. :D

  • Road Rash is awesome, the music did unfortunately only get worse as the series progressed, but all the same Road Rash is one of the greatest franchises ever made and thats not open to discussion!

Whats this about this not being on a proper Megadrive?

The reasons had better be good and if your in need of a new console then PM me and i will hook you up :)

  • @darrenwalshsock LOL... the reason for the non-genuine Megadrive is purely one of convenience. This thing is tiny and so can remain setup all the time. So I figured I'd do some vids while I was having a play on it.

  • @SteveBenway Fair enough mate,i appreciate seeing some Megadrive love from your goodself, clone system or not :)

  • Great video. RR II was my very first video review here on youtube. Ah the memories :)

  • Haha. Yeah I have this game somewhere. I love the original!

  • ive saw some very bad reviews on the wee sega clones, i had actually ordered one and cancelled it after seeing all the reviews, im trying to remember the name of it, arggghhhh ..... 'Atgames Blaze' im pretty sure that was it.

im suprised sega even allowed their name on the product. but thats the reason i finally bought an old megadrive on ebay :)

i even bought that 'reactor' wireless sega console beore all this carry on, and wholy crap, less said the better !!!! lol

  • @mrbassman25 This thing is made by ATgames. Probably the same internals as the Blaze handheld thingie. It's definitely quite surprising that Sega allowed it, so maybe they're short of cash.

  • @SteveBenway

hehe, my thoughts exactly uncle steve !

  • Those side-view mirrors are really cool!

  • @alecjahn Shows how much attention I pay... I hadn't even noticed them... lol :D

  • In regards to sound it cant be as bad as the non licenced ones , I have a Seddaa clone (I have a brief look of it in my videos) and it ether has way too soft music with random sound effects that sound like it came out of a NES instead of a sega, or no music and SFX glitching with random beeps. combined with the fact that both of my video capture cards cant record it :(

  • The problem with Genesis/ Mega Drive clones is that it's a really hard system to emulate proberly because of the resolution and the processor in the original system itself. The only REALLY accurate Genesis clone was actually the Genesis model 3 which was made by Majesco and officially licensed by Sega believe it or not.

Road Rash is an awesome series. I loved these games and am hoping to pick them up again soon!!

  • @PerroKiltrodeCombate I know... something went terribly wrong... lol :D

  • My favourite game in the series. I still remember the cheat for the Wild Thing 2000 to this day.

  • fab games 1 and 2 ....be intresting to see review on cloned system mate

  • This has more exciting tracks and better combat than Road Rash 1, the only thing missing is Sir Rob Hubbard. Buy a really fast bike!

  • Awesome series ripe for a remake!

  • @MaximumRD Absolutely! :D

  • Nice pick. One of my favorite Megadrive games. What made it stand out above the rest was the co-up 2 player split screen mode. One thing is playing against the computer, but playing against or with a human makes it just that more fun. Road Rash 3 was equally good and actually feels a bit more colourfull (even tho it does have that "sequal" feel to it).

  • RR original was better graphically or at least in my opionion

  • @GamingWithStatoke I agree. Something about the original just looked more... pleasantly green.

  • All 3 Road Rash carts are multi region. How comes you got the slow PAL version of the music on your NTSC Nomad?

I use NTSC mode on my MD and never got PAL slowdown in the music like you did.

    Weird.

  • @wrestletube1 The music is awesome on NTSC speed I'll think you'll find and it's a good soundtrack in it's own right like the game.

  • @wrestletube1 But I'm not playing this on my Nomad. It's some weird clone machine.

  • love this game spent hours playing this

  • @RonnieCoffman It's definitely one a person could get hooked on :)

  • Looks a bit choppy framerate, but seems still quite playable. Love all the Road Rash games on my PS1.

  • @Polaventris Pal games run at 50 FPS NTSC at 60 FPS so a USA Nomad would render it at the wrong FPS as far as i assume anyways

  • @TheSymbianFreak Then again he is using a clone machine, and there known not to be as good as the real thing

  • @Polaventris I agree, it is a bit choppy, though I've always thoght the framerate on the 16 bit Road Rash games was a little iffy. I should give it a go on a genuine megadrive and see how it performs on that.

  • Looking forward to your review of the clone system! I like the idea of hardware clones, and own a Retron 3 myself, but it definitely isn't spot on, like any other clone. One day I'm sure these companies will develop fully-compatible and totally accurate systems, and that'll be a very good day for retro gaming.

I wonder if they'll move on to consoles that used optical media when those patents expire, or if we'll be expected to play those games on PCs using emulators and controller adapters...

  • Bloody awesome game, and one of my favourites for the Megadrive. I used to rent this like crazy when it was in it's prime. A shame you don't care for the music, as it's one of my all time favourite MD soundtracks. No matter, to each his own!

    Thank you for reading!

  • @BlooditeDrakan The music might be more to my liking if I play it on a genuine megadrive.

    Thank you for writing :D

  • @SteveBenway Well, who knows if that would change your mind. But, yes, this clone has butchered the music beyond belief in lowering the tempo and octave. If that were me playing, I would have yanked the cartridge out and thrown the console in the bin. But that's just me.

    Thank you for replying!

  • is this video working?

  • @MooreGamesJay It's working now. YouTube was being totally lame for an hour or so. The upload page said it had completed processing, and it was playable from my channel's front page, but when you came to this page, it said it was still processing. Totally lame.

  • i cant watch anything, as all i see is its "being processed" i'll check back later mate.
