absolutely perfect camouflage...they can even mimic a waxy leaf with the underbelly. It's amazing how evolution can produce this through trial and error.
Before these videos, I've only seen scorpions and tarantulas as pets. I had no idea that so many much more beautiful insects could be pets. They all seem to have their own personalities! I love these videos. (^_^)
Umm... I'm new to the amazing world of stick insects/mantids/leaf insects/etc. How can a species survive without males? Do the females simply carry both types of reproductive cells?
@mashmusic11235: no, having both types of reproductive cells would meat they are Hermaphrodites. The magic word here is "Parthenogenesis"
Sometimes however there are male phyllium giganteum, but they are very rare and the females don't need them.. i think it's a evolutionary relic from long time ago when they reproduced "normal"
@WiiSpeakApple : they walk and climb and eat and drink and play dead/leaf and lay eggs. They eat bramble and oak leaves. This particular species (phyllium giganteum) doesn't have males, but other phyllium species do, the males climb on the female, docks his abdomen on her abdomen and transfers the semen. This can take hours. The males are smaller and usually can fly.
@WiiSpeakApple p. siccifolium is smaller, and they have males. The females have wings, that cover the complete abdomen, p. giganteum have smaller wings. But still, the p. siccifolium females can't fly... You can feed the same, I think... the rest is a job for you&google ;)
i find it fascinating that an insect can genetically mimic the look of a plant to survive, that just blows my mind, how do they do it? well i kno how, over time but still...
@strohmann California. Zoos and other such facilities could have them but I was looking for sellers when I found out this state couldn't keep phasmids and tiger beetles.
i think the moult was ok, the video is 2 days after the moult and it hasn't eaten these 2 days. Some days later, after eating and drinking it got smoother. My other leaves looked quiet like this one at the corrosponding age..
it's adult now, i'll do a new video soon... the song is from youtube. They have this service "AudioSwap" where you can choose from quiet a variety of songs. Unfortunately I don't remember how it was named. It's not from a well-known band or soundtrack, at least i can tell you that....
R these good pets as I might be getting 3 of them
