If you watch the last episode they have an insert in there that says that Souls who use the Death Note go to neither Heaven or Hell but they go to Mel. which is Nothingness. In otherwards either Light is floating through an empty void of nothing, concious of every waking moment of blackness for eternity, or he has been eliminated and his soul no longer exists... he is completely gone...
