AHHHH sooo good. The suspension at the end!....the A moving to the G over the F#!!! Yummmmm. 1:13 - 1:20 ...how about that for a progession! The orch. arrangement is so much better than the piano so, in my opinion! Nomnomnom.
Can I please direct you're attention to some other great Norwegian composers? : Ole Bull and Johann Halvorsen. Even though they are probably not in league with Grieg, they still have wonderful qualities. If you like Grieg, I promise they are worth exploring.
@goawayanddontcomebac the notes aren't hard... it's just a fast scale. it's just a matter of letting your fingers fly and not making the notes blend together in a muddy mess.
@goawayanddontcomebac Not really, it's just a matter of not letting your fingers get sloppy and articulating well with your left hand (on the fingerboard). After playing scales for years your fingers know where to go and can probably move fast enough :P
@goawayanddontcomebac it's actually just a descending scale starting with the first violins to the seconds then to violas, cellos, and ends in the bass. it's pretty simple but sounds ridiculously hard to manage. That's what I LOVE about classical music. There's so much technicality in the piece which makes it seem impossible :)
I've noticed that in pretty much every classical song I like, there's one part with some sort of crazy effect, followed by a glorious melody. At this time, you feel success at making it to this point, and the instruments sing with satisfaction. In this piece, this happens at 1:35
amazing,I believe Holberg Suite is one of the best 10 or 20 classic songs,it s never getting older, ,but if people listen this music everyday, but everday, I bet wars could be end or never happen again.
It's an absolutely beautiful song to play enough, I've learned this due to my orchestra class...but I must say, it's more spectacular to hear being performed by professional rather than my little student orchestra class. ^^ Bravo Grieg for such a brilliant set of suites!
I absolutely adore 'The Holberg Suite' and part 3 is my favourite... althought I wousl happily listen to them all... Wonderful music indeed... Equals a happy me :0)x
The original of this is for piano and the '1 +a 2 +a' rhythm in the upper strings in the beginning are broken arpeggios that are wicked fast. Great piece though, thanks for posting!
@arlenm2008 i've heard like 10 ppl on youtube play this on piano, from professionals to just ppl with a passion, and nobody ever gets it right. but it still seems like it could go very very well on piano
Sorry, but this doesn't hold a candle to the original version for piano IMHO! It completely loses all the incredible energy of the broken chords...this version is so saccharine!
OK, two things: firstly, all I said was that, in my opinion this arrangement isn't as effective as the piano version, which I think is a fair enough comment given that Grieg himself admitted this.
Secondly, it's a little harsh saying I have no musical talent - I'm currently doing my Doctorate in music at a Conservatoire for your information! Don't attack people for having opinions!
@brassgirl89: i think that the orchestral arr is more complete and whole. the sound covers the entire spectrum of pitch. this is esp so for the first and last mvmts for this piece. any pianist has but two hands, playing an average of two to three distinct melodic/harmonic lines. on the contrary the string orch can display more diff timbres. perhaps they shouldnt b compared in these terms; rather, they are diff and evoke diff emotions. juz my opinions :)
You have to realize that some schools have excellent music programs. College-level, even. The one I go to does. A lot of the ones you find on here aren't that great, though.
i went to one myself. Winning competitions and all that good stuff. but still, even though there were many excellent players, the back ranks/files are still filled with kids who arent great and hurt the sound of the Violin II section , or Violin I's who are so out of tune you can hear them when playing high up on the E.
Trust me, when you play with a more professional group you'll instantly see the difference. If you have ever played as a youth guest you know what I mean.
@246trinitrotoluene exacto, it seems the older the music style and orchestration, the harder it is to make it sound good, esp with holberg if anyone is off their game you will hear it
we just played this for our concert and took it like ten times this speed.we didnt plan it tho it just sorta happened lol. i am viola player and may i say this was insane to play! but its awesome :)
@frozenwolves but don't you find how difficult it it is makes it all the more satisfying, enjoyable to play and inherently more beautiful when you do manage to play it well?
woah this song amazing...but our orchestra is not D: only in middle school and we're playing this. violas bowings really hard :( i wonder how they do the bowing so perfect
i remember playing this piece my freshman year... and i also remember having nightmares about that viola part :P haha... i didn't do so well that year XD
I just got this piece today for the cello. Well, technically since I am the weakest of our four cellos, I'm playing the Bass part. and I hate it for only one reason: My timing is horrible! Having to rest for 10 measures then jump in is not something I've been good at. I love the piece, but it's tough since I only have 5 days to learn the entire thing.
