  • WIFFY EXTREME

  • Could have used a Dremel cutoff wheel on the BNC connector rather than the pliers and dykes. Easier and neater

  • what guage wire is inserted to the bnc connector to make 1 5/8 element

  • I think it was #10, but it really doesn't matter too much.

  • Don't use silicone, silicone will rust the can. Use hot glue to seal.

  • So how well does the cantenna send the signal down range compared to the wireless adapater you took apart assuming the cantenna and the wireless adapter are located in the same place?

  • Adding the can makes a big difference!

  • FYI, USB 2.0 has much less bandwidth than Cat5/6, So id recommend NOT using USB. Besides, with Ethernet you can run a cable straight from the router to your home network.

  • Ethernet doesn't supply the unit with power so it would no be an "active cantenna"

  • I guess your not too concerned with high bandwidth then, youll be limited to about 2mbps download speed, roughly translating to a real work maximum download speed of about 200k per sec. Your losing a lot of bandwidth.

  • of course, ethernet wireless adapters have power supplies so, yes, it is considered an "active cantenna"

  • POE pal = power of ethernet - so it is possible..errr very do able.

  • Hey gthomas,

Thanks a lot for putting this stuff online!

I found it really interesting and it makes me want to make one myself. There is just one part of the video that wasn't really clear to me (probably because of me being a complete dummy when it comes to this kind of stuff). I'm talking about the preparation of the bnc connector (minute 25) and connecting the element. I mean, what goes where?

Do you maybe have some pictures or written explanation about this part of the process?

    Thanks

  • Sorry. This video is all that there is on the subject...

  • Corrected link for the calculator: it's turnpoint, not turningpoint

  • anyone know how you could extend the distance you can have this from your computer using ethernet adapeters and cat5 cbl?

  • sweet vi deo

  • Great video. Whats the brand of your analog multimeter? Thanks!

  • That's a 30 year old Radio Shack FET VOM.

  • great Vid :D

  • good idea

  • Does the inside of the can have to be metallic? Does the can have to be perfectly circular? Could you use sheet metal to make a larger cylinder?

  • The can needs to be metallic inside or out. It does not have to be perfectly circular. Sheet metal should work great. Changing the size changes the focal point where you mount to element.

  • Thank you for the quick reply. Regarding making the cylinder larger, I was just curious if bigger is better.

  • Yes...

  • Really nice cantenna! instead "Active Cantenna" may be the Linksys USB Cantenna WUCAN54G hahaha... are not illegal in my contry i try...

  • Much better than Myth Busters. You guys are not only informative (I'm going to build the cantenna following this video) but you are also very amusing and funny!

  • now everyone can do something useful with their can...

  • Awesome. anyone know where direct?ions would be for this?

  • wow i think thats the longest youtube video i ever seen

  • 100% excellent, with network stumbler!!!

  • good idea.

  • Good idea!

  • cooooool stuff

  • WICKED. Thanks guys.

  • excellent video...keep it up with your knowledge!

  • lerning all the time thankyou

  • cool
