@hockeyplaya2724 pretty much the blood flow to the heart muscle is impaired, and they use the defibrillators to kinda jump start it again, if it is not relieved quick enough eventually the brain will no longer get oxygen which is carried by the blood and you will go and unconscious and soon after die.

Awesome Ref... quick to act. Player passed out, but appeared to be moving and breathing irregularly. Reminds me of cardiac arrhythmia, which can end in arrest... it's possible the blood wasn't moving and CPR helped restore normal heart beat.
