People were extremely skeptical when the World Cup came here to the USA in 1994. I remember (I was 8 at the time) people talking on TV how it would be a failure since Americans hate soccer because it's perceived as "boring" among other things. They thought that because it's not violent like American football (and to a lesser extent the thuggery of the NBA), we'd ignore it.

However, those who actually watched remember how great it was. '94 is the reason why I love watching the game today.
