  • from the bottom of my heart... ty. One of my faves of ALL TIME. no words can express.. and ty for keeping it real and the wonderful sound quality~~~ Sail on Friend~~ find your southern cross

  • Wow! Takes my mind off the little things, less than five minutes, but still free to wonder.

  • I apologize to all listeners for YouTube's stupidity in making it impossible for me to remove the songs they have removed from this playlist. At least there is still some great music left, so enjoy! Yes, stupidity reigns universal.

  • Raced on a schooner, back in the 70's. This song always brings back those great memories.

  • NOT A BLONDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! D#@m

  • not a blonde!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAMM

  • THANK YOU for posting the TRUE recording of this song!!! Other vids don't have the omitted lyrics (due to corporate influences on true artistry)......... "So we cheated and we lied, and we tested. And we never failed to fail...it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested. Somebody fine will come along, make me forget about loving you...and the Southern Cross.".........Thanks CSN: I love this song more everytime I hear it. NOBODY else does harmony and lyrics like this.

  • A classic!

  • So many bittersweet memories associated with this song...Mom used to play guitar & sing this to my sister & I when we were very little. Mom is long gone, my sister & I are middle aged...but this song remains timeless.

  • Excellent sound

  • Harmonies and lyrics just don't get any better than this...I love this song more everytime I hear it. And it's never far from my turntable...on vinyl.

  • awesome tune. great pics...thanks for posting.

  • wonderful video of one of my favorite songs. Love the tall ships.

  • These boats are spectacular.

  • "We never failed to fail, it was easiest thing to do". I'm not sure that I have that right, but in my minds eye that is how we mess up, by not trying hard enough to make it work. I'll wager that durable relationships are built on hard work, and the results are a lasting love. Great song!

  • This song meant alot to me as I went through college. I love it.

  • I'm still in college. I'll be a senior next year. Ups and downs and all arounds. I just hope I can stay strong enough to make it.

  • Sweet, I love how a song can create fights!

  • you are a moron, nuff said\

  • Really?! Why is that!?

  • What does the Canadian Space Agency have to do with it?

  • Are you really that fuckin' stupid!?

  • there realy isn't all that much to this song, I think people over analyze things, could also be all those drugs from the 60s creepin up on ya.

  • Spoken like a true square.

  • This song is about self realization and salvation.. this was my class song when I graduated.. It took 10 years before I began to realize what this song was singing about.. and another 5 before I could say that I understood... When it hits you, you will know and it will set you free.. I have seen the Southern Cross.. it's a beautiful sight.. everyone should have that chance.. Good luck.

  • sweet

  • sailers sad love song..was i on oil tankerwhen song came out months later girl friend left me for besy friend/roomate "On a midnight watch i realized why...." BITCH

  • You are the bich. you deserved that!

  • This is us. We are travelers. We have this unspoken yearning to wonder/wunder/lust. What fine strange animals we are. I especially like the females of our kind. They seem to me to be the best of us.

  • Great, great song! Heard it on the radio today, and had to drive around until it was done.

  • This really is the most brilliant song. I just love it.

  • If there really is a Heaven, I hope to hear CSN&Y singing this song on the way upstairs! Touches your soul... their Harmony on this tune is simply Magnificent! Thank you...

  • Hearing this takes me back to the 5 years I lived on Nantucket. Greatest days of my life!

  • spirits are using me,

    a larger voice is calling...

    now I just gotta listen.

  • "And my love is an anchor tied to you- tied with a silver chain."

Sheer genius. One of my favorite lines in music.

  • This is church music...(the real church...not the one with laughable gods and incense and lies.......) This touches the heart of what we really are...Thank you, Steven....BTW, this song is copyright@1974, does anyone know why it took them 6 or 7 years to put it out?

  • unktantor...by no means do I claim to be an expert, but I'm thinking that during that time frame, they weren't talking to each other, much less recording together. I DO recall that this was on their 'Reunion' album.

  • This is truly a pool side-seaside-summer groove tune!!

  • ONE OF MY ALL TIMES FAVOURITE SONG . Simply AMAZING !!!

  • to Patrick Fitzgerald--go get Barry

  • Very accurate, except for the cheating and lied part, by the way. Great song.

  • what the hell you talking about. you an idiot make no sense.

  • great song love it.......

  • this is rl music. i mean yes, i do like uther music, but nothin calms me mor than acustic, classical, or old fashiond....like bagpipes...an the banjo...ther so relaxin^^ i also like the way the slide show looks so old fashiond

  • damn this song is amazing.

  • Twice you ran away.

  • I have loved this song for most of my life, reminds me of when I was starting out on my own, love Crosby, Stills, Nash, and, Young!

  • Happy New Year to the person(s)who shared this video with us,ty, great bands are never forgotten! Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young

  • But on the midnight watch...

  • What heaven brought you and me...why was it forgotten? Shaking my head.

  • loved this song when it first came out, now it has more meaning for me because my husband is a sea captain who has "been around the world" and our love has endured. great video

  • To improve sound don't forget to add &fmt=18 to the end of the link for stereo.

    Crank it. :-)

  • listening to this song makes you realize how crappy musicians have become. relying on computers to make the music for them. they dont make good music like this anymore! honest and pure!

  • HOME.

  • What a smooth, tight, and well composed and sung song! After not hearing this music for almost 30 years, it sounds just terrific to me now!

  • @Spottyo AS an old sailor, it sure brings back memories from long ago ('70's). Crossing the equator and seeing the Southern cross for the first time in 1975.

  • I was lucky enough to see these guys in a small place in Albany NY in 1989ish. I thought this was my favorite song they did, until I heard Stephen Stills do an acoustic "Midnight Rider". If anyone has that one, please post.

  • If you don't love the sea, you will by the end of this great tune!!! Thanks, Steve!

  • I was a kid when this came out and this kind of rock is all I knew at th time! Love it!

  • I can see a reason for living in this song, its almost a big part of my life, back in the days this came out i remember 5 of us taking the song apart line by line trying to argue over what it meant for 5 hours, the trouble is it means something different to everyone............they don't make them like this anymore, nor will there ever be another late 50s ,60s and early 70s rd1064........just as well i doubt i could live thru another........

  • The perfect video for a wonderful, soulful song.

  • Listening to this song quiets my soul. I cannot imagine the connection that inspired this song to be written ...... But love is such a powerful thing.

  • @gulfgypsy This song was composed during the break up of Still's marrige...It is about a boat ride he took when the split was final.. Funny too as Crosby was the one with sailing fever yet Stills pens one of the the best sea / sailing songs of all time - peace

  • @veribull Loving, losing love, no matter why, can make a person look inside and wonder if things could have been different. Yes, Crosby was the one with the sea in his soul. Maybe that's why Lee Shore is such a beautiful song.

  • No doubt...I lived an earlier life on a sailing ship back in the 1500's... I know it just as I know 2008.

  • For you that don't understand. visable in the southrn atmosphere is a gallaxy named Cruz,(cross)When sailing with an old sailor,he pointed out The southern cross in cruz. The bottom of the cross always points South. A night navigator then knows North,East, and West. I HAVE been around the World.

  • One of my all time favorite songs.

    Memories of a better time...

  • one of the best ever!

  • This song takes me back to easier times. Good times.

  • sounds like youngs singing in the back or did he leave before this song came out?

  • My father was heading into work last night, and this song came on the radio. He called me and played the song into the phone so I could listen to it.

WATCHING THIS VIDEO IS TIME WELL-SPENT. THANK YOU.

  • Love this song!

  • one of the all time greats!! love this song! and oh by the way, chrismach454, your a dweeb...

  • dweeb? I would have used a stronger word, kind of like dumbfuckerwhohasnotasteinmusic.

  • chrismac454; Would love to be inside your head to imagine how this song of all songs sucks ass!!-Unreal!!; Get yourself a fuckin SOUL man!!-One of the greatest songs ever written-this song transcends criticism-PERIOD!!!

  • my dad saw these guys in '69

  • Then dont listen to it and try to start drama?

  • This song ties my son and I together. He lives and works on a resort island. This song is about a trip to the French Polynesian islands, Papeete (capital of the island chains, located on Tahiti) and the Marquesas (volcanic island chain in South Pacific). Such a calming song. The music puts you right on the sailboat, doesn't it? A true classic song. Kudos to whoever posted this, with the great artistry!

  • Katieandjames6,Yes you are right about the song..I sailed across the pacific to tahiti in 1984.We played this song atleast a 100x This song brings back some wonderful memories.

  • Lucky!! I bet you have some neat photos to match the memories. Beautiful place, isn't it?

  • perfect great job with this and nice song

  • i seen them in concert in98 awsome

  • This song is one of their best. This video is really nice! Thank you for sharing it.

  • love this song

  • My all-time favorite!

  • One of the best written songs of all time.CLASSIC.

  • Agreed. I only wish that this band had more I that I like (the only other one is 'Teach Your Children'). If this means a lot, check out some of Elton John's work. My 3 faves are, (1) Funeral For A friend/Love Lies Bleeding (10:41 version), (2) I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues (2nd when you search on this site), (3) Someone Saved My Life Tonight.

  • YES elton john is a great artist ( one of my favorites)seen him twice in concert and 1 time with billy joel exelent performance.

  • The John and Joel duet must have been pretty AWESOME!

  • sweeeeet :)

  • It's the "Nicely making way" harmonies that floors me every time-Genius tune,Thanks Mr Stills.

  • This isnt your typical rap crap

  • Agreed.

  • My father and I took a really long car trip about 2 weeks ago. We got a C, S, and N CD. We kept replaying this song. It would be over, and we would play it again. This went on about 50 times in 2 days. He said to me, 'You know I like this song b/c I keep playing it and I'm not tired of listening yet.' I completely agreed! That was the ONLY song played in that car that trip. Windows open, full blast. We both agree- our fav part is with the silver chain.

  • Ha ha i love that. I've heard this song like constantly since i was a kid and here i am listening to it again. my personal favorite part is "In a noisy bar in Avalon, i tried to call you, but on the midnight watch i realized why twice you ran away"

  • I get what you're saying- I love the song and couldn't begin to tell you my least favorite part, simply because I don't have one in this song. This is what a truly meaningful song is like.

  • There's something about this song that keeps me coming back to it.

  • Is that c, s, or n? It sounds like David Crosby to me, but Graham Nash sang so many of their tunes. Sorry, just recently becoming a fan.

  • Stills sings the lead on this one.

  • stills is the main singer in this one, grasshopper. No need to ne sorry.

  • I'm starting to not be happy with how much this song is stuck in my head, I try listening to it to make it go away, but it won't.

  • Don't let it end , great ships and a great song , my compliment.

  • such a good tune

  • CSN is always GRET! but, that being said, CSN&Y can't be BEAT! you don't have to like Neil Youngs Politics ,to like what he adds to the vocals, and the instrumentals!

  • Rightfully done.

  • I'm about 9 minites from selling my home and buying a boat to go see the southern cross!

  • I can see the SC from my front porch on a tiny island famous for its sea captains.

Nicely done but what's with the lines throughout??

  • saw them on the colbert report :D they were funny and had a good performance with colbert :D

  • I have always liked their music but I think this song is #2 on my list #1 being ohio and #3 being wooden ships

  • timeless

  • Got to see this group unplugged, minus Neil, they were great!!!! This is my fav song!!

  • yeah i saw them on saturday in boston and the guy next to me yelled "where's NEIL?!" in between songs and grahm nash goes "hes in your closet asshole!" hahaha

  • this song makes me think of my dream

  • god i love this song!!

  • Nice Video and An awesome song!

  • I love songs about the sea, and this is one of the best...third gen Army..born ,49.

  • My favorite CSN song. Stills' voice is perfect and the lyrics touch something deep down.

  • It's one of my favorites also, although technically it's not CSN on the studio version. David Crosby was too strung out to participate in the sessions. Timothy B. Schmit (Poco/Eagles) and Art Garfunkel did the background vocals on this one.

  • That's something I didn't know! Thanks.

  • saw them in concert and this song brought down the house! Somewhere i have that tour tshirt with the flying saucers on it....anyone remember that?

  • As an old GI, this song has special meaning. I love the line, "I have been around the world, looking for that woman." That's my life: Colombia, Germany, Italy, Thailand, PI, Mexico, Puerto Rico, England, Spain, etc. The other song that I love is Travelin Man by Ricky Nelson

  • As a sail charter skipper I totally love this track - only in my case it's 44ft of waterline. It's a great feeling though! This is one of the alltime great sailing songs I reckon

  • I wish you could have been there, too. I have always felt so blessed to have grown up when I did, mostly because of the music we were surrounded by -- born in '55.

  • you did grow up in a blessed time. this song reminds of my dad even though he doesn't know it. i am a woman who is fifth generation navy. feel like i am living my parents sixties lives. beautiful song.

  • I'm 27...Truer words have not been spoken my friend.I'd give you 200 thumbs up if I could.

  • I'm sad my reply didn't get posted under the comment I was replying to.

  • i think I was told this is the name of Stephens boat but dont quote me anyone know?

  • The fact that Justin Timberlake is considered the highlight of my generation's music makes me want to kill myself.

  • EXCELLANT MUSIC!

  • one of the greatest songs of all time if not the greatest

  • AWESOME!

  • I'm building my time machine..and I'm travelling back to the times..when I jammed coin after coin into jukeboxes..to hear beauties like this..over and over and over..and I ain't ever coming back..

  • Great comment!

  • Love this song and this video, its sooooo peacefull I think!!

  • Very nice job! I love this song, the montage of ships was a great video for it. Giving it the "aged" film look is a great touch, and it actually makes the waves appear to move slightly.

  • CSN and Y whenever he's there=the greatest band ever, IMHO....

  • My uncle took his leave in the southern cross during his time in Vietnam.

  • The southern cross is a star constellation. What kind of space ship did your uncle use?

  • It was a model 7XR-3.

  • lmmfao beeoch!!!! funniest damn comment in the history of youtube. congrats

  • Great song, great video!!!

  • i love this song!:)

  • I think this song should be used at AA, It would help a lot of people

  • i need aa.....

  • Always loved this song!

  • I think the fake scratches and dust on the "film" was overdone and detracted from the pictures. It looked like the same pictures over and over.

Not bad, but could be better.

  • omg , do I know you >>>>>>>>> I think I do

  • Great job on this video chevymudslinger!!! I've been lucky enough in my life to see The Southern Cross,(and also to hear CSN&Y). If any of you EVER get a chance to, trust me, ...you will NEVER forget it!! Sail On!!!

  • I heard that the band had Art Garfunkel (uncredited) sing David Crosby's part because he was so messed up on drugs at the time of this recording. Anyone know if that is true?

  • I've always loved this song. They don't write them like this any more.

    Great images!!!

    &hearts

  • What is the Southern Cross? I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • the southern cross is a grouping of stars used by sailors in the southern hemisphere to navigate. like how sailors use the north star the northern hemisphere

  • Stephens boat and a star formation

  • That Slide show was awesome.

    very nicely done !!!!

  • Water is so theraputic! The vision of calming waters and the sound of water flowing down stream no resistence! Just go with the flow and no matter what happens, always keep your childish innocence, it is the most important thing ever! :) :) Tap Happy!

  • lovely! monica apollonia dickerson, owensboro, kentucky

  • thankyou silvertx for posting this to me

  • This song and sounds of silence two of the best written songs of all time , CLASSIC.

  • I so want to be on that boat looking at the Southern Cross! Guess I'll just have to be content with closing my eyes and letting the music take me there.

  • Lost my dearest friend (best man at my wedding) in a suspiciuos fire in 1987. We had this song played at his funeral, as it represented the lost souls that we had become. We never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do...

  • Beautiful song! Brings back great memories when this 1st came out. Thanks !

  • 'I have my ship,

and all her flags are a-flyin',

she is all that I have left,

    and Music is her name!'

  • Thanks for the inspiration. I Have always wanted to see the Southern Cross. I am about to turn 70, I guess I better get with it.

  • thanks man, made my day.............

  • Great Pic's (Video)! Thanks for making this. GREAT song! One of a kind! They just don't make'em like this any more! A true classic masterpiece!

  • I Think this video is one of the best and i love this song...

  • Beautiful song, great harmony, great video of tall sailing ships. Thank you.

  • Great song, and I remember it from being a kid 25 years ago... for those of us who headed "this way" 10 years ago, I think about moving 1300miles south of my home... For me, it's about the opportunities in the "sun belt" compared to the "rust belt" of my Pennsylvania.
