from the bottom of my heart... ty. One of my faves of ALL TIME. no words can express.. and ty for keeping it real and the wonderful sound quality~~~ Sail on Friend~~ find your southern cross
I apologize to all listeners for YouTube's stupidity in making it impossible for me to remove the songs they have removed from this playlist. At least there is still some great music left, so enjoy! Yes, stupidity reigns universal.
THANK YOU for posting the TRUE recording of this song!!! Other vids don't have the omitted lyrics (due to corporate influences on true artistry)......... "So we cheated and we lied, and we tested. And we never failed to fail...it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested. Somebody fine will come along, make me forget about loving you...and the Southern Cross.".........Thanks CSN: I love this song more everytime I hear it. NOBODY else does harmony and lyrics like this.
So many bittersweet memories associated with this song...Mom used to play guitar & sing this to my sister & I when we were very little. Mom is long gone, my sister & I are middle aged...but this song remains timeless.
Harmonies and lyrics just don't get any better than this...I love this song more everytime I hear it. And it's never far from my turntable...on vinyl.
"We never failed to fail, it was easiest thing to do". I'm not sure that I have that right, but in my minds eye that is how we mess up, by not trying hard enough to make it work. I'll wager that durable relationships are built on hard work, and the results are a lasting love. Great song!
This song is about self realization and salvation.. this was my class song when I graduated.. It took 10 years before I began to realize what this song was singing about.. and another 5 before I could say that I understood... When it hits you, you will know and it will set you free.. I have seen the Southern Cross.. it's a beautiful sight.. everyone should have that chance.. Good luck.
sailers sad love song..was i on oil tankerwhen song came out months later girl friend left me for besy friend/roomate "On a midnight watch i realized why...." BITCH
This is us. We are travelers. We have this unspoken yearning to wonder/wunder/lust. What fine strange animals we are. I especially like the females of our kind. They seem to me to be the best of us.
If there really is a Heaven, I hope to hear CSN&Y singing this song on the way upstairs! Touches your soul... their Harmony on this tune is simply Magnificent! Thank you...
This is church music...(the real church...not the one with laughable gods and incense and lies.......) This touches the heart of what we really are...Thank you, Steven....BTW, this song is copyright@1974, does anyone know why it took them 6 or 7 years to put it out?
unktantor...by no means do I claim to be an expert, but I'm thinking that during that time frame, they weren't talking to each other, much less recording together. I DO recall that this was on their 'Reunion' album.

listening to this song makes you realize how crappy musicians have become. relying on computers to make the music for them. they dont make good music like this anymore! honest and pure!
@Spottyo AS an old sailor, it sure brings back memories from long ago ('70's). Crossing the equator and seeing the Southern cross for the first time in 1975.
I was lucky enough to see these guys in a small place in Albany NY in 1989ish. I thought this was my favorite song they did, until I heard Stephen Stills do an acoustic "Midnight Rider". If anyone has that one, please post.
I can see a reason for living in this song, its almost a big part of my life, back in the days this came out i remember 5 of us taking the song apart line by line trying to argue over what it meant for 5 hours, the trouble is it means something different to everyone............they don't make them like this anymore, nor will there ever be another late 50s ,60s and early 70s rd1064........just as well i doubt i could live thru another........
Listening to this song quiets my soul. I cannot imagine the connection that inspired this song to be written ...... But love is such a powerful thing.
@gulfgypsy This song was composed during the break up of Still's marrige...It is about a boat ride he took when the split was final.. Funny too as Crosby was the one with sailing fever yet Stills pens one of the the best sea / sailing songs of all time - peace
@veribull Loving, losing love, no matter why, can make a person look inside and wonder if things could have been different. Yes, Crosby was the one with the sea in his soul. Maybe that's why Lee Shore is such a beautiful song.
For you that don't understand. visable in the southrn atmosphere is a gallaxy named Cruz,(cross)When sailing with an old sailor,he pointed out The southern cross in cruz. The bottom of the cross always points South. A night navigator then knows North,East, and West. I HAVE been around the World.
chrismac454; Would love to be inside your head to imagine how this song of all songs sucks ass!!-Unreal!!; Get yourself a fuckin SOUL man!!-One of the greatest songs ever written-this song transcends criticism-PERIOD!!!
This song ties my son and I together. He lives and works on a resort island. This song is about a trip to the French Polynesian islands, Papeete (capital of the island chains, located on Tahiti) and the Marquesas (volcanic island chain in South Pacific). Such a calming song. The music puts you right on the sailboat, doesn't it? A true classic song. Kudos to whoever posted this, with the great artistry!
Katieandjames6,Yes you are right about the song..I sailed across the pacific to tahiti in 1984.We played this song atleast a 100x This song brings back some wonderful memories.
Agreed. I only wish that this band had more I that I like (the only other one is 'Teach Your Children'). If this means a lot, check out some of Elton John's work. My 3 faves are, (1) Funeral For A friend/Love Lies Bleeding (10:41 version), (2) I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues (2nd when you search on this site), (3) Someone Saved My Life Tonight.
My father and I took a really long car trip about 2 weeks ago. We got a C, S, and N CD. We kept replaying this song. It would be over, and we would play it again. This went on about 50 times in 2 days. He said to me, 'You know I like this song b/c I keep playing it and I'm not tired of listening yet.' I completely agreed! That was the ONLY song played in that car that trip. Windows open, full blast. We both agree- our fav part is with the silver chain.
Ha ha i love that. I've heard this song like constantly since i was a kid and here i am listening to it again. my personal favorite part is "In a noisy bar in Avalon, i tried to call you, but on the midnight watch i realized why twice you ran away"
I get what you're saying- I love the song and couldn't begin to tell you my least favorite part, simply because I don't have one in this song. This is what a truly meaningful song is like.
CSN is always GRET! but, that being said, CSN&Y can't be BEAT! you don't have to like Neil Youngs Politics ,to like what he adds to the vocals, and the instrumentals!
yeah i saw them on saturday in boston and the guy next to me yelled "where's NEIL?!" in between songs and grahm nash goes "hes in your closet asshole!" hahaha
It's one of my favorites also, although technically it's not CSN on the studio version. David Crosby was too strung out to participate in the sessions. Timothy B. Schmit (Poco/Eagles) and Art Garfunkel did the background vocals on this one.
As an old GI, this song has special meaning. I love the line, "I have been around the world, looking for that woman." That's my life: Colombia, Germany, Italy, Thailand, PI, Mexico, Puerto Rico, England, Spain, etc. The other song that I love is Travelin Man by Ricky Nelson
As a sail charter skipper I totally love this track - only in my case it's 44ft of waterline. It's a great feeling though! This is one of the alltime great sailing songs I reckon
I wish you could have been there, too. I have always felt so blessed to have grown up when I did, mostly because of the music we were surrounded by -- born in '55.
you did grow up in a blessed time. this song reminds of my dad even though he doesn't know it. i am a woman who is fifth generation navy. feel like i am living my parents sixties lives. beautiful song.
I'm building my time machine..and I'm travelling back to the times..when I jammed coin after coin into jukeboxes..to hear beauties like this..over and over and over..and I ain't ever coming back..
Very nice job! I love this song, the montage of ships was a great video for it. Giving it the "aged" film look is a great touch, and it actually makes the waves appear to move slightly.
Great job on this video chevymudslinger!!! I've been lucky enough in my life to see The Southern Cross,(and also to hear CSN&Y). If any of you EVER get a chance to, trust me, ...you will NEVER forget it!! Sail On!!!
I heard that the band had Art Garfunkel (uncredited) sing David Crosby's part because he was so messed up on drugs at the time of this recording. Anyone know if that is true?
the southern cross is a grouping of stars used by sailors in the southern hemisphere to navigate. like how sailors use the north star the northern hemisphere
Water is so theraputic! The vision of calming waters and the sound of water flowing down stream no resistence! Just go with the flow and no matter what happens, always keep your childish innocence, it is the most important thing ever! :) :) Tap Happy!
I so want to be on that boat looking at the Southern Cross! Guess I'll just have to be content with closing my eyes and letting the music take me there.
Lost my dearest friend (best man at my wedding) in a suspiciuos fire in 1987. We had this song played at his funeral, as it represented the lost souls that we had become. We never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do...
Great song, and I remember it from being a kid 25 years ago... for those of us who headed "this way" 10 years ago, I think about moving 1300miles south of my home... For me, it's about the opportunities in the "sun belt" compared to the "rust belt" of my Pennsylvania.
from the bottom of my heart... ty. One of my faves of ALL TIME. no words can express.. and ty for keeping it real and the wonderful sound quality~~~ Sail on Friend~~ find your southern cross

Very nice job! I love this song, the montage of ships was a great video for it. Giving it the "aged" film look is a great touch, and it actually makes the waves appear to move slightly.

CSN and Y whenever he's there=the greatest band ever, IMHO....

My uncle took his leave in the southern cross during his time in Vietnam.

The southern cross is a star constellation. What kind of space ship did your uncle use?

I think the fake scratches and dust on the "film" was overdone and detracted from the pictures. It looked like the same pictures over and over.
Not bad, but could be better.
