This was, both, a stakes and course record. Secretariat beat the existing stakes record by 2 1/5th seconds with Ten Tam also beating the existing stakes record. The hold on Sec was much tighter than at the Belmont Stakes. He ran the second half of this race faster than the second half of the Belmont AND, as always, he looks like is just having fun.
seems he was just playing with the other horse, almost teasing him. you could see the stride of Secretatiat was so much longer, he was just galloping along at the end, a walk in the park
@Secretatiat159224 Agree with you! This just looks like one of his early morning work outs! what would of happend if the jockey really asked him to stretch out off that bend? 30 lenths win? Was hardly off the bridle in any part of that race.
So many great horses from 1972/73. Tim Tam, Kennedy Road, Onion, Angle Light, Twice a Prince, the great Sham, and so many more. It's a testimony to how great Secretariat was and how difficult it was to win the Triple Crown. You can tell how much heart Tim Tam has in this race, he's just over matched.
@TheVagolfer IMHO, Secretariat was just too much horse for anyone in history. The valiant horse in this race is in fact Tentam, son of the speedy Intentionally...Hall of Famer Tim Tam ran in 1957 and '58.
Others have mixed up the names in the past, so it's no big deal. :)
One of the best clips to watch him run. True athletes love what they do and he certainly did love to run and had the equipment to do it. One of a kind! ♥
tim tam ran a huge race...secretariat was just a monster....you wonder if he could have gone 2:22 if he really had to sprint at the end of this race or the Belmont
Big Red was all heart, figuatively and literally. When he was put down they estimated his heart was 22 lbs almost 2 and a half times bigger than a regular horse. Sham also had an oversized heart, his was 18 lbs verified.
All Red had to do was to maintain his pace. He was too big and strong for other horses to keep pace with him. Just ask Sham, he will tell you all about it. The greatest race horse of all time. Hands Down and the End of Conversation.
What a magnificent animal. On the rein all the way, galloping with such purpose and stride. When gently prodded he always found another gear. This superb American champion was the epitome of a "horse of a lifetime".
the horse who ran second tim tam made 2 awesome runs at secretariat -the greatest race horse ever. nowadays great horse run on either dirt or turf-they become specialist. secretariat ran on both.
We just don't see horses like this in America anymore. Trainer Sherrill Ward described Forego as being a stayer with speed, and that is an excellent description of Secretariat; put aside the big body and all the muscles, the longer the race was the more Secretariat liked it. Now when D. Wayne Lukas suggests shorting the Kentucky Derby to a 1 1/8 you can find people in the industry who support him. We need more longer races not shorten the ones we have, and we'll have better horses for it.
@jsandlin08 lol thats what it looks like but he was just slowly picking up speed and the other horse kept trying to catch and runnin out of steam haha
Thanks for the video. Never saw it before. Never saw Big Red run in that fashion before either. Lucian Lauren did tell Penny Big Red would have been better on grass. Gives you something to think about. Thanks for the video.
Secretariat ran faster fractions in many of his races. He was a "man among boys" who enjoyed toying with the other horses by hanging back, then turning on the afterburners, as if to say "I'm the champ, watch how it's done!". His losses were flukes. First race he finished 4th. He finished first in another race but was disqualified to 2nd. Onion crowded Big Red on the inside to beat him. There is only one Secretariat, and he will forever be the measuring stick for all other thoroughbreds.
Awesome to see him running on grass, as a racing fan from Down Under, I don't like dirt track racing, it's just too hard on the horses, and the rate of injury is just too high for my liking. I love racing, but I love horses more.
Wow, I never get tired of watching Secretariat run. He's so beautifully balanced, and powerful. It's truly amazing. He won this race so easily...in another hand ride. Thank you for posting this video!
Secretariat was in a gallop here not the big stride he had in the Belmont. Watch both videos and you can tell he was not given much head here. He also looked bigger and Charles Hatton said he had a coughing virus looking terribly ill. Still he ran it in track record of 2:24 4/5 that still stands today.
Secretariet had one extra gear that he could use for all of his races. In the Belmont Ronnie Turcot let him loose to show the world just how good he really was. The one thing that is sad is that we will never see another horse like this in our lifetimes. If you were alive to see Big Red you will have memories of a horse that will be mentioned 100 years from now. God Bless Big Red thanks for memories and RIP.
@stephen39217 well i do agree with you for the most part, the world will always remember Secretariat but who knows there might come a day when a faster horse arises and beats his record, most likely not, but still who knows.... could happen
@starfire2727 I'm sure there are some people who feel the way you do, but I seriously doubt his Belmont time will even be approached - within a second - at least in my lifetime. The big thing about a horse coming close to his time is whether or not he is untouched by the whip. Secretariat's feat is all the more amazing in the fact he was merely hand-ridden in the last 70 yards because Turcotte saw a chance at a record time. If a horse can do anything like that, only then would it comparable.
@starfire2727 As the fractions are not what they were, I would bet money the Belmont is reduced to 1 3/8 th's miles before any horse breaks 2:26 let alone come anywhere near Secretariat's 2:24. For those that do not understand, it juts does not happen. Read this : Sec's Belmont time DOES NOT HAPPEN in horse racing.
@bbmtge In other words, it is just impossible at that distance for a horse to run each quarter-mild fraction fast than the previous. That is why Sham folded. It just can't be done ... only Secretariat could do it. His heart ... bigger than a lion's.
@phddddd I think you may be confusing the KD with the Belmont. In the KD, Sec ran each successive quarter faster than the previous. With respect to his time in the Belmont, the fraction required to even match his time are imposssible. Yes...impossible.
That was just cruel how Secretariat let Ten Tam just get close enough to feel some hope, then draws away farther, lets Ten Tam get close again, then puts him away. Don't ever tell me that Red didn't deliberately toy with his opponents. That was part of the fun of the race for him (besides trying to achieve his ultimate ambition of flying off the track and into the sky).
Just mind-boggling! I still get chills watching this great horse run. He hardly drew a breath in this race, and nothing on Earth could have beat him that day. Just the greatest.
@BellaDonna55 Totally agree with everything you said. Makes one wonder just what he would have been capable of if asked for everything. I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 2:22 3/5. Then again, seeing him run this great time so easily just adds to his legendary status.
@cf1970 Tim Tam??? challenged Secretariat throughout this race? Tim Tam?? Tim Tam won the K.D. in 1958 over Kennedy Road and Silky Sullivan, among others. What's he doin' running as a what, 18 yr. old in this race?
@Gantonish Are you referring to Dave Johnson's pronunciation of Tentam's name (it can sound very similar to "Tim Tam") , or the previous comments made with the name "Tim Tam"? If it's the latter, I simply don't have time to correct every minor inconsistency posted on here. In that vein, Kennedy Road didn't race until 1970, not in the '50's, and he didn't even run in the Derby. Perhaps you meant Lincoln Road, who finished second in 1958.
Oops, so sorry. I don't hear well enuff anymore to distinguish names that sound so similar. I stand corrected, on BOTH counts. I shouldn't have reacted so hysterically. Again, please accept my humble apology....
@Gantonish Not a big deal. I admit that I was puzzled at the hysterics, but I can understand your incredulity at the possibility of a horse from the '50's being called in the '70's. Hearing loss is a sad thing, and I wish you well with that. I appreciate your humble reply very much.
To those who weren not alive or can not remember 1973.....This is what a race horse is supposed to be...not a Drosselmeyer who staggers across the finish line in 2:31 and change. Through these videos you can see "magic" in motion.
@MelC54 Well put, Mel...Big Red's stride is absolutely mesmerizing. This race looks like the easiest mile and a half ever run. For God's sake, the horse doesn't even look like he's trying!!!
@TheDenisSugrue Good point. You would think that they would create or rename a dirt race for the horse who was arguably the greatest of all time. Secretariat has a race named after him on the turf as well, at Arlington Park, but he did run on the grass, unlike Man o' War. Peculiar, to say the least.
@bbmtge Big Red carried 121 lbs in this race, being entered as a three year old, while Tentam and Big Spruce shouldered 5 lbs more, a standard weight concession for older horses.
Wow, it's great to watch a video of a legend. Just wish I could of seen Sec race in person....Big Red was indeed the greatest race horse on this planet.
Sec has this beautiful gate that is so wonderful to watch. He has so much power in front, reaching out, grabbing, then he seems to just fly. So powerful but so relaxed. He makes it look so easy!
What I love about this race, the MC and the Canadien is that, in my humble opinion, we were getting a glimpse of the continued maturation of Sec and some insight as to what he would have benn capable of at 4YO. I simply cannot get enough of this champion.
Big Red ran this race a full second faster than the Belmont from the 3/4 mile post to the finish line.
He was clocked at the 3/4 mile in 1:11 3/5 here to 1:09 4/5 in the Belmont.. 1 & 4/5 seconds behind at this point but finished only 4/5 of a second behind his Belmont time. Truly amazing folks.
What an amazing race! Tentam tried so hard, but Secretariat was no mach for him. It almost seemed as if Secretariat was teasing Tentam. Tentam would try to draw near and Secretariat would let him get to 3/4 of a length on him then shoot away. I wonder what goes on in his mind when he runs. It is obvious that he loves it though! Amazing horse for the ages!
@dhanimals1028 Turcotte said he was playing cat & mouse with Tentam. He could have pulled away easily if wanted too. This turf track was faster than the dirt track he won at the Belmont race. If Ron turned him loose here like he did in the Belmont he would have ran it in less than 2:24 flat.
What I find most amazing is that a horse of his size and moving so fast at the top of the stretch turn always managed to hug the rail when he had the lead. Maybe give Turcotte credit . He was like a truck engine with a 50 gallon tank but great fuel efficiency.
Those front leg kicks are amazing. Never seen a race horse with such leg kicks as these. The one in the Preakness when he started his swift move to the outside to go to the front was an awesome kick too. I thought he was going to go airborne.(smile)
the power of the chestnut and his reserves and extra gears is awe inspiring! The game runner up would have run down a lot of good/great horses in an effort like this.Often great horses succumb to amazingg challenges like this in longer races The way Secretariat pulls away when they come to him so often is a thing of beauty . Must have been a thrill to ride him with the confidence in knowing you had so much horsepower at your disposal and so many gears at your command!!!
Game effort by runner up .Would have run down many good to great past horses He came at Big red a few times but those incredible gears of Secretariat are too much for even great horses and super efforts by others To be able to keep pulling away from challengers like this seemingly at will is a sight to behold ! Many times great horses succumb in longer races to willing challengers But the power and the reserves of this magnificent chestnust were awe inspiring!
Great race.. one of the most entertaining longer races for Secretariat..The user's comment here was right on about the very game and all out effort from Tin Tam.. Came at Big Red a few times Probably would have run down a lot of past very good//great horses. But Secretariat lets them come and then moves away. Even in these longer races Big Red seems to toy with even the most gallant of place finishers finishers.Secretariat and those incredible gears! Never see another like him!!!
The ironic thing here is that he was syndicated for a then record 6M and Penny was just trying to do right by the horse physically when she wanted him to race on the grass whilst also not denying the racing public. 2 grass races, 2 victories and Champion Grass Horse as well that year. mitch, you're right as well. That horse chasing him was a champ in his own right and took aim but still couldn't catch him. I think Big Red was the impetus for the automobile invention of cruise control.
This race came after his loss to Prove Out in the Woodward. Afterward, Ron Turcotte said that Secretariat was just tired, but they had already turned their focus to running on the grass at the Man o' War. Three days prior to the race on Saturday, Secretariat worked 5/8ths in 56 flat - only 4/5ths off the world record! Ron siad that Secretariat was so eager to run the race that he could barely hold him back. Three runs at him by the four year old grass horse champion Tentam were to no avail.
They put S in Wdwrd bec of rain, Riva didn't like mud. Sec was gently training for the Man O'War in 2 wks, wasn't prepared. And don't forget for Marlboro Cup LL had pumped 4 strenuous wkouts into S coming off virus which caused Whitney loss. It took 2-3 wks to sweat out and come back . A virus goes thru whole system. Nack said another horse wld've been ruined. He improved w/each wkout. Then Woodward debacle, bad judgment. Yet S had great time which noone mentions.
I'd love to see the 12 other horses that the one "expert" thought was better than Secretariat. It's almost a given he voted Man O' War first, but who were the other 12?
My GOD! this animal was so amazing it was hard to hear of his death. i think the world lost a magnificent creature that day. His immortality remains unshaken at the Belmont!
truly amazing how he toyed with the field. every time the 2nd place horse got close enough he would just away. it really looked like tourcotte and sec were teasing the way you tease a little kid.
You are right. Quotes from Turcotte rebutting the writers who did not choose sec for Horse of the Century:
" In that race I was only playing cat and mouse with Tentam. I could have pulled away anytime I wanted to . . . He was lighter on his feet and just seem to float on that grass. At the time I estimated, and I sincerely believe to this day that as great as he was on the dirt, he was 10 to 15 lengths better on the grass."
imagine the records if he'd been a turf horse. amazing
Man O' War was chosen as horse of the century by a panel of racing experts but it was later revealed that the reason Secretariat placed second was that one voter maliciously voted Secretariat as only the 14th best horse of the 20th century. Secretariat actually had many more first place votes than Man O' War though.
Nack talked about that, he said if he had known that some so called expert put secretariat in 14th he would of done the same to man o war just to even out the voting. man o war was a great horse but he had zero competition. the so called 100 lenght win he had was against a stable pony.
Great post. I hope you enjoy other Sec videos. He ran with such ease. Please note in this race that the 2 horse made multiple runs at Sec only to fail every time. The energy required by Sec to adjust to this is incredible. Still, he wins with ease.
Secretariat was the greatest horse to step foot on the track. He was the finest of physical specimens - almost without flaw. He never put a lame step down and retired just as sound as the day he started racing. L Laurens conditioning brought him to his sharpest at the Belmont. Coming off an illness to set a world record 145 2/5 at the Marlboro, toying with Tentam in the Man'oWar, stakes race times for morning workouts. Never a bandage on him. His accomplishments may never be equaled. Mitch
You know, I was just watching the start again. His first race on grass, it's as if he was feeling it out, notice how he seems to lunge a little, then again.... and then he lunges forward again and kicks out and goes for it. Also read, I think, that Turcotte was saying "easy boy... easy..."
It is amazing how he just kept running away from Tentam (who to his credit made multiple runs at Sec) Who was a champion turf horse. If a horse ran against Sec too many times it would most likely destroy their confidence, and believe me horses can most certainly lose their confidence if they continually get beaten badly. Trainers drop horses down for an easy race all the time to boost their confidence. It is what we as trainers, and or owners always fear, especially with young horses.
I have primary source material of Tentam's trainer saying A) SECRETARIAT was by far the greatest horse he'd ever seen or faced and B) that he'd never let Tentam face him again. It's amazing to listen to the awe in his voice.
Interesting points: The great Man OWar also was retired at 3, unlike most all other great horses (Phar Lap, Seabiscuit, etc.). Secretariat could have carried staggering weights as older horses, like their close ancestor Discovery, the great weight carrier. All three are direct descendants of Fair Play. I believe Secretariat was the greatest horse ever. I dont take any points from the original Big Red or other greats. Though, Secretariat was just perfect in every way.
This is amazing how Secretariat toys with the little game Tentam... it is amazing how Secretariat just plays all the way home. He just changes gears in the stretch and I'm sure he was only using 2 of his 5 gears. AMAZING! Ron always said secretariat was great on the dirt, but even greater on the turf. Sure looks it here!!
what an amazing stride he had!! wow!! could you imagine sec, dr fager and spectacular bid at there best in the same race. all carring 126 pounds. fager carried 130, 134 and 135 and i think he ran 1:59 3 times with 134. thats almost impossible.
I love a story that Ron Turcotte told how Sham once brushed slightly against Secretariat during a race. He said that Secretariat responded immediatedly as if saying "Don't get near me...I'm done with you" and shot way ahead of Sham and left him way behind him for the remainder of the race..Ron said that Secretariat made his own rules in every race and seem to toy with the other horses...and then showed his power by starting in last position and then overpowering them in a few seconds.
Unbelievable horse and still my favorite of all time!! BTW, they did an autopsy on him after he passed away trying to figure out why he could outrun every horse at such great speed...His heart was enlarged by double the normal size. He could pump more oxygen than any other horse which gave him the ability to outrun them. He also had the most perfect stride ever recorded. He was such a beautiful horse...and absolutely fascinating to watch him race!
Look at his size and power in this race- all that muscle. A horse like that shouldn't have had that kind of stamina - too hard to keep that body going like that for long.
Did you know that in 1999, 10 yrs after we lost him, the Maryland Racing Commission finally gave Secretariat his 1:53 2/5 record. I don't understand why it wasn't more publicized, I've seen subsequent references that still talk about the malfunctioning clock and Pimlico settling on the 1:54+
bon...thanks for your comment about Sec at the Marlboro Cup. I had no idea, until you pointed it out, what his time was at 1 1/4 miles. I looked up the record for the 1 1/8 mile distance. 1:45 flat...a FOUR year old carrying 117 pounds.
Another great race and time for Sec. Thanks, again.
Thanks for that info. I can't believe they never let him have it from the beginning. He was so fast, it was unbelievable and they couldn't admit it.... and then came the Belmont stakes. He showed 'em!
Tentam was a good four year old, and gave the Big Guy a pretty good run for a bit before succumbing in the stretch. That year, Tentam won 3 grade 1's, and placed in 3 others.
I've often wondered what Secretariat might have done as a 4YO, as he was beating them pretty good as a three! Of course, how much weight would he have been asked to carry? I wasn't a racing fan until '77, but I read once that this was a main reason he was not raced after his 3yo season. Can someone confirm/deny this?
My understanding is that the syndication deal entered into before Secretariat's 3 yr. old year precluded him from running as a 4 year old. Its a shame because he was related to Discovery, one of the great handicap racers of all time. As a 3 yr. old, he had already beaten older horses like Riva Ridge (racing Hall of Fame), Cougur II (racing HOF), Key to the Mint (horse of the year) and Kennedy Road, not to mention Tentam.
Yes, Secretariat was syndicated as a 2yo. The terms included he would retire at the end of his 3yo season. However, I agree he would have been beyond phenomenal as a 4yo. If he were to race at 4, he would have been considerably heavier with a big appetite and would continue to develop stallion weight. He was a very large and mature colt, seemingly older than he was at 2 and 3.
As with horses like Discovery, and more recently, Forego, it was possible that Secretariat would have been assigned outrageously high weights too. Nevertheless, just imagine: If he was as good as the greatest 4yo at the age of 3, what could he have done in his prime at age 4? He did it all at age 2 and 3, which is more than most any horse can do in many years of racing.
the best thing about this horse is he was bred off of Hay, Oats and Water; not some pill or extreme protein diet. He was quick and durable more then any of these horses today can say.
The boy with the Checkered head gear simply played with them, and then destroyed them in the far stretch. He broke a lot of hearts since his was two times bigger than any other. He was having fun. What a thrill to watch!
gfn02 you are so correct, Tentam was a champion turf horse and to his credit he tried to get Secretariat multiple times in this race. Lauren told his owner that he thought Secretariat was even better on turf than grass! I can't disagree with him on that one bit.
I understand how you feel, but the beauty of racing is the chance of a GREAT ONE coming along. For all we know he or she may have born this spring. Remember people said the same thing about Man O' War. I don't think Secretariat has tarnished Man O' War's rep at all. The GREAT ONES will always be just that,no more no less!
Wow,awesome and vintage!!!Where did you get this video ? It is wonderful!!!Thanks for sharing this beautiful creature with us:)God bless you!Love,Peggie
That horse was POWER on four legs. He made it look easy. Tentam made a game effort, but Sec was just playing with him. Once he moved to the front, it was HIS.
Yep, this was his very first race EVER on grass, while Tentam was a 4 yr old grass champion, and he was never seriously threatened, and he drew away to win by 5 in the last furlong, all while not being asked for anything.
Lucien Lauren said that Secretariat was a better horse on the turf. That is a sobering thought,he set a set a record in this race. He beat Tentam, who was a Turf Champion!! Lauren may have been right!
I agree with you, great horses all. I have videos of those fine horses, save John Henry (I have a couple videos of him to come) and Nijinsky (admittedly, I've got to bone up on his great career). Secretariat's racing career and life just happens to be my favourite, just as yours might be Kingston Town, for example.
You make a fair point. Others have their favourite(s).
What about Kingston Rule, he was a son of Secretariat. an aussie and you didn't mention the great 17.2 hands, beautiful chestnut Phar Lap? He's right up there. Is Kingston Town related to Kingston Rule?
This was, both, a stakes and course record. Secretariat beat the existing stakes record by 2 1/5th seconds with Ten Tam also beating the existing stakes record. The hold on Sec was much tighter than at the Belmont Stakes. He ran the second half of this race faster than the second half of the Belmont AND, as always, he looks like is just having fun.

GO SECRETARIATE! XD
julie246ify 1 year ago
Secretariat was in a gallop here not the big stride he had in the Belmont. Watch both videos and you can tell he was not given much head here. He also looked bigger and Charles Hatton said he had a coughing virus looking terribly ill. Still he ran it in track record of 2:24 4/5 that still stands today.
rscarbro100 1 year ago
Secretariet had one extra gear that he could use for all of his races. In the Belmont Ronnie Turcot let him loose to show the world just how good he really was. The one thing that is sad is that we will never see another horse like this in our lifetimes. If you were alive to see Big Red you will have memories of a horse that will be mentioned 100 years from now. God Bless Big Red thanks for memories and RIP.
stephen39217 1 year ago
@stephen39217 well i do agree with you for the most part, the world will always remember Secretariat but who knows there might come a day when a faster horse arises and beats his record, most likely not, but still who knows.... could happen
starfire2727 1 year ago
@starfire2727 I'm sure there are some people who feel the way you do, but I seriously doubt his Belmont time will even be approached - within a second - at least in my lifetime. The big thing about a horse coming close to his time is whether or not he is untouched by the whip. Secretariat's feat is all the more amazing in the fact he was merely hand-ridden in the last 70 yards because Turcotte saw a chance at a record time. If a horse can do anything like that, only then would it comparable.
cf1970 1 year ago
@starfire2727 As the fractions are not what they were, I would bet money the Belmont is reduced to 1 3/8 th's miles before any horse breaks 2:26 let alone come anywhere near Secretariat's 2:24. For those that do not understand, it juts does not happen. Read this : Sec's Belmont time DOES NOT HAPPEN in horse racing.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge In other words, it is just impossible at that distance for a horse to run each quarter-mild fraction fast than the previous. That is why Sham folded. It just can't be done ... only Secretariat could do it. His heart ... bigger than a lion's.
phddddd 1 year ago
@phddddd I think you may be confusing the KD with the Belmont. In the KD, Sec ran each successive quarter faster than the previous. With respect to his time in the Belmont, the fraction required to even match his time are imposssible. Yes...impossible.
bbmtge 10 months ago
@bbmtge Secretariat's splits for the KD were: 25 1/5, 24, 23 4/5, 23 2/5, and 23. Each 1/4 was indeed faster.
Source; Trivia for Secretariat!

STU676 1 year ago
That was just cruel how Secretariat let Ten Tam just get close enough to feel some hope, then draws away farther, lets Ten Tam get close again, then puts him away. Don't ever tell me that Red didn't deliberately toy with his opponents. That was part of the fun of the race for him (besides trying to achieve his ultimate ambition of flying off the track and into the sky).

Tim Tam was a premier turf horse of any era and Secretariat just absolutely toyed with him...unbelievable!!!

BellaDonna55 1 year ago
@BellaDonna55 Totally agree with everything you said. Makes one wonder just what he would have been capable of if asked for everything. I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 2:22 3/5. Then again, seeing him run this great time so easily just adds to his legendary status.
Thank you for the comments. Have a good week!
cf1970 1 year ago
@cf1970 Tim Tam??? challenged Secretariat throughout this race? Tim Tam?? Tim Tam won the K.D. in 1958 over Kennedy Road and Silky Sullivan, among others. What's he doin' running as a what, 18 yr. old in this race?
Gantonish 1 year ago
@Gantonish Are you referring to Dave Johnson's pronunciation of Tentam's name (it can sound very similar to "Tim Tam") , or the previous comments made with the name "Tim Tam"? If it's the latter, I simply don't have time to correct every minor inconsistency posted on here. In that vein, Kennedy Road didn't race until 1970, not in the '50's, and he didn't even run in the Derby. Perhaps you meant Lincoln Road, who finished second in 1958.
Anyway, Happy New Year to you.
cf1970 1 year ago
@cf1970
Oops, so sorry. I don't hear well enuff anymore to distinguish names that sound so similar. I stand corrected, on BOTH counts. I shouldn't have reacted so hysterically. Again, please accept my humble apology....
Gantonish 1 year ago
@Gantonish Not a big deal. I admit that I was puzzled at the hysterics, but I can understand your incredulity at the possibility of a horse from the '50's being called in the '70's. Hearing loss is a sad thing, and I wish you well with that. I appreciate your humble reply very much.
Have a good week.

Why is the man O'war run on the carpet?
TheDenisSugrue 1 year ago
@TheDenisSugrue Good point. You would think that they would create or rename a dirt race for the horse who was arguably the greatest of all time. Secretariat has a race named after him on the turf as well, at Arlington Park, but he did run on the grass, unlike Man o' War. Peculiar, to say the least.
Take care.

Don't know if many knows it but Big Red ran the last half of this race "ONE" second faster than he did in his Belmont win.
Might be one of the reasons Turcotte said he believe he could run faster on turf.
rscarbro100 2 years ago
What I love about this race, the MC and the Canadien is that, in my humble opinion, we were getting a glimpse of the continued maturation of Sec and some insight as to what he would have benn capable of at 4YO. I simply cannot get enough of this champion.
bbmtge 1 year ago
Big Red ran this race a full second faster than the Belmont from the 3/4 mile post to the finish line.
He was clocked at the 3/4 mile in 1:11 3/5 here to 1:09 4/5 in the Belmont.. 1 & 4/5 seconds behind at this point but finished only 4/5 of a second behind his Belmont time. Truly amazing folks.
rscarbro100 2 years ago
What an amazing race! Tentam tried so hard, but Secretariat was no mach for him. It almost seemed as if Secretariat was teasing Tentam. Tentam would try to draw near and Secretariat would let him get to 3/4 of a length on him then shoot away. I wonder what goes on in his mind when he runs. It is obvious that he loves it though! Amazing horse for the ages!
dhanimals1028 2 years ago
@dhanimals1028 Turcotte said he was playing cat & mouse with Tentam. He could have pulled away easily if wanted too. This turf track was faster than the dirt track he won at the Belmont race. If Ron turned him loose here like he did in the Belmont he would have ran it in less than 2:24 flat.
rscarbro100 1 year ago
What I find most amazing is that a horse of his size and moving so fast at the top of the stretch turn always managed to hug the rail when he had the lead. Maybe give Turcotte credit . He was like a truck engine with a 50 gallon tank but great fuel efficiency.

the power of the chestnut and his reserves and extra gears is awe inspiring!

Many times great horses succumb in longer races to willing challengers But the power and the reserves of this magnificent chestnust were awe inspiring!
lpvcrcd 2 years ago
Great race.. one of the most entertaining longer races for Secretariat..The user's comment here was right on about the very game and all out effort from Tin Tam.. Came at Big Red a few times Probably would have run down a lot of past very good//great horses. But Secretariat lets them come and then moves away. Even in these longer races Big Red seems to toy with even the most gallant of place finishers finishers.Secretariat and those incredible gears! Never see another like him!!!
lpvcrcd 2 years ago
The ironic thing here is that he was syndicated for a then record 6M and Penny was just trying to do right by the horse physically when she wanted him to race on the grass whilst also not denying the racing public. 2 grass races, 2 victories and Champion Grass Horse as well that year. mitch, you're right as well. That horse chasing him was a champ in his own right and took aim but still couldn't catch him. I think Big Red was the impetus for the automobile invention of cruise control.
joefederico 2 years ago
This race came after his loss to Prove Out in the Woodward. Afterward, Ron Turcotte said that Secretariat was just tired, but they had already turned their focus to running on the grass at the Man o' War. Three days prior to the race on Saturday, Secretariat worked 5/8ths in 56 flat - only 4/5ths off the world record! Ron siad that Secretariat was so eager to run the race that he could barely hold him back. Three runs at him by the four year old grass horse champion Tentam were to no avail.
mitchblack 2 years ago
They put S in Wdwrd bec of rain, Riva didn't like mud. Sec was gently training for the Man O'War in 2 wks, wasn't prepared. And don't forget for Marlboro Cup LL had pumped 4 strenuous wkouts into S coming off virus which caused Whitney loss. It took 2-3 wks to sweat out and come back . A virus goes thru whole system. Nack said another horse wld've been ruined. He improved w/each wkout. Then Woodward debacle, bad judgment. Yet S had great time which noone mentions.

You are right. Quotes from Turcotte rebutting the writers who did not choose sec for Horse of the Century:
" In that race I was only playing cat and mouse with Tentam. I could have pulled away anytime I wanted to . . . He was lighter on his feet and just seem to float on that grass. At the time I estimated, and I sincerely believe to this day that as great as he was on the dirt, he was 10 to 15 lengths better on the grass."
imagine the records if he'd been a turf horse. amazing
fourtwentysevensohc 2 years ago
who was chosen as horse of the Century? I can't believe Secretariat wasn't chosen.
007InMiami 2 years ago
Man O' War was chosen as horse of the century by a panel of racing experts but it was later revealed that the reason Secretariat placed second was that one voter maliciously voted Secretariat as only the 14th best horse of the 20th century. Secretariat actually had many more first place votes than Man O' War though.
hotlilbabes 2 years ago
Nack talked about that, he said if he had known that some so called expert put secretariat in 14th he would of done the same to man o war just to even out the voting. man o war was a great horse but he had zero competition. the so called 100 lenght win he had was against a stable pony.

Yes indeed. Secretariat was astounding and perfect and the greatest horse ever!
starzinliberty 3 years ago
Secretariat was the greatest horse to step foot on the track. He was the finest of physical specimens - almost without flaw. He never put a lame step down and retired just as sound as the day he started racing. L Laurens conditioning brought him to his sharpest at the Belmont. Coming off an illness to set a world record 145 2/5 at the Marlboro, toying with Tentam in the Man'oWar, stakes race times for morning workouts. Never a bandage on him. His accomplishments may never be equaled. Mitch

Great posts from all. I read a description of Sec on turf. It stated that he used the grass "like a springboard". Well put.
bbmtge 3 years ago
You know, I was just watching the start again. His first race on grass, it's as if he was feeling it out, notice how he seems to lunge a little, then again.... and then he lunges forward again and kicks out and goes for it. Also read, I think, that Turcotte was saying "easy boy... easy..."
bon1042 2 years ago
It is amazing how he just kept running away from Tentam (who to his credit made multiple runs at Sec) Who was a champion turf horse. If a horse ran against Sec too many times it would most likely destroy their confidence, and believe me horses can most certainly lose their confidence if they continually get beaten badly. Trainers drop horses down for an easy race all the time to boost their confidence. It is what we as trainers, and or owners always fear, especially with young horses.
BE109 3 years ago
I have primary source material of Tentam's trainer saying A) SECRETARIAT was by far the greatest horse he'd ever seen or faced and B) that he'd never let Tentam face him again. It's amazing to listen to the awe in his voice.
gfn02 3 years ago
Interesting points: The great Man OWar also was retired at 3, unlike most all other great horses (Phar Lap, Seabiscuit, etc.). Secretariat could have carried staggering weights as older horses, like their close ancestor Discovery, the great weight carrier. All three are direct descendants of Fair Play. I believe Secretariat was the greatest horse ever. I dont take any points from the original Big Red or other greats. Though, Secretariat was just perfect in every way.
starzinliberty 3 years ago
This is amazing how Secretariat toys with the little game Tentam... it is amazing how Secretariat just plays all the way home. He just changes gears in the stretch and I'm sure he was only using 2 of his 5 gears. AMAZING! Ron always said secretariat was great on the dirt, but even greater on the turf. Sure looks it here!!
starzinliberty 3 years ago

Can someone confirm/deny this?
all66books 3 years ago
My understanding is that the syndication deal entered into before Secretariat's 3 yr. old year precluded him from running as a 4 year old. Its a shame because he was related to Discovery, one of the great handicap racers of all time. As a 3 yr. old, he had already beaten older horses like Riva Ridge (racing Hall of Fame), Cougur II (racing HOF), Key to the Mint (horse of the year) and Kennedy Road, not to mention Tentam.
ihasch 3 years ago
Yes, Secretariat was syndicated as a 2yo. The terms included he would retire at the end of his 3yo season. However, I agree he would have been beyond phenomenal as a 4yo. If he were to race at 4, he would have been considerably heavier with a big appetite and would continue to develop stallion weight. He was a very large and mature colt, seemingly older than he was at 2 and 3.
starzinliberty 3 years ago
As with horses like Discovery, and more recently, Forego, it was possible that Secretariat would have been assigned outrageously high weights too. Nevertheless, just imagine: If he was as good as the greatest 4yo at the age of 3, what could he have done in his prime at age 4? He did it all at age 2 and 3, which is more than most any horse can do in many years of racing.
