Talking about Golf grips, When you pick up a golf club your hands are the only part of your body that touch the club. For many years the hands (grip) have often been referred to as the steering wheel of the golf swing. I don’t believe this could be more true. Gripping the golf club correctly makes playing this game a much better experience. w w w (dot) golferbreak80 (dot) c0m
YO Mogan......i am a Hogan nut.......i read the 5 lesson most nights .....its like my bible........i bought your book and i love it.....it answers many questions about 5 lessons......i really like the section about ringing the bell.......i used to try and swing like hogan but i ended up hooking the ball swinging flat like he did.....i realised i am a different build to him, i am tall and thin and i need to swing on a more upright plane.
Hey Sevam, so I have been playing with different grips after your comment a few days ago... to be honest the 1st time i tried the 5 lessons vardon grip i wasnt entirely comfortable, so i went back to my interlocking grip. but after your comments and watching your videos and hogan videos over and over again i forced myself to use it for a few days..... and the result is straighter shots than I have ever had before, with every club. it feels more natural to cup the left wrist now as well. thnx!
There is some magic in the Vardon grip. Having the left thumb and forefinger on the shaft does a number of positive things. Some are related to feel, but others are mechanical and relate to the true fulcrum point on the shaft which is between the hands under the left thumb. Moe told me to work everything through the left thumb. You can do this better (especially on the backswing) with the left forefinger on the shaft.
I need to buy a camcorder so i can upload my swing, i've never actually seen my own swing... would love to hear what you can help me with :) im sure there is alot im still doing wrong ;)
I have a question. Last year a hit the ball fairly low with all my clubs, especially the driver and it allowed for more distance and accuracy. This year I have been hitting all of my clubs extremely high, especially the driver. I have lost some distance with all my clubs since last and have been concerned since I feel like my swing is the same. Do you think it is a swing error or does it have something to do with my shafts or clubs? I play G5 irons with regular shafts. They are about 3yrs old.
Hard to know without seeing your swing. Could be ball position or grip related. Could also be grip pressure related. There are lots of variables. I wouldn't be tinkering with the clubs until you check some things in your swing. Ball position would be the first to check. If you have it creeping a little too far forward you may wind up scooping it a bit even if you have a good action.
Driver under the left armpit. The other clubs about an inch and a half back from that.
Grip pressure should be firm both hands and both hands are important but he left thumb and forefinger are particularly important and are usually ignored in modern instruction. The fulcrum point on the shaft is located there because that is the inside of the left wrist and the left wrist is the principle hinge.
I think ive got everything pretty much down and my swing is feeling great and i have alot of confidence in it except that I have a tendancy to flip through impact resulting in a huge 20yard hook, i have trouble keeping the blade square at through impact and not to flip it... maybe something old that i struggle to get rid of but its killing me on the course.
Any ideas? maybe my left hand (im right handed) is breaking down ?
I like old clubs. That is a 1961 Ben Hogan Power Thrust 5iron. In some of the video's I am using 1963 Ben Hogan IPT's. I also use an old MacGregor Jack Burke model in one of the vids I think. When I play which is about 5 times a year I use 1969 Hogan 1+ Bounce Soles. I just bought a set of 1967 Hogan Percussions on Ebay that I will be giving a spin this year also. I also have 1958 Hogan Starbursts and a set of 1957 Precisions. I have some modern sets which continue to collect dust.
That's interesting. What makes you use the old blade style clubs when today's market offers more forgiveness while still allowing for some workability? What advantages do you feel the old hogan irons have when compared to today's equipment?
Older clubs are balanced better to rotate. New clubs are balanced to close. Old blades are generally neutral in that regard and I prefer that. They are also often heavier and made of better forgings that are easier to bend and since I like my lies flat that is preferrable to me. I also don't like offset.
Actually, the video appears to have somehow been stretched vertically when it was edited it down. In reality I am still fat and swing flat with a fair bit of lateral movement.
It was like this in the editing room "Sevam1 looks like crap. Either stretch this thing or airbrush that stomach out" ;)
I guess this video at least gives us an idea of what my swing might look like if I was 6'2"190 instead of 5'9" 225..
Sorry for taking so long to post something new everyone.
at :53 seconds when the dog comes in and eats a ball its sooo funny its amazing. You didn't even flinch. AND your steep man !

Front foot flaring also helps balance!!! if you didnt have the front foot flared you would roll to the outside of ur left foot.

where would you recommend the ball should be placed in the stance with a PW, 7, 5 or driver? Where should pressure be placed in the grip?

Vardon Grip as Hogan describes in 5 Lessons. Apply pressure with left thumb and forefinger. You will not hook.

cool thanks i will try that, when i first started playing i used the interlocking grip and its really odd to feel comfortable with the vardon grip.
Thanks man!!

What kind of irons do you hit when you play or when you do these videos?

Welcome Back, sevam1. Personally, I like the "new" look. Ian
Poulter has that same outfit in his new clothing line. That one
would be from the John Deere collection!! Casey looks as fit
as ever as well. DTS

I like the new intro. BTW, your swing looks different, less lateral motion.
