Yes, in opened areas, but if you're smart enough to lure the attacking scout to a close space, you just shoot him at point blank and kill him.

Also Scatter gun scouts will run towards you trying to get close, if you run backwards and put him in the line of sandman, you just hit them and neutralize them.

you know that sandman? how it decreases your total health to 95? well, guess how much damage a point plank scatter gun does.

so in the end range doesn't matter, it's whoever hits the other guy first. and with 6 shots in rapid succession, the scatter gun is at a clear advantage.

I use the force-a-nature on certain maps that has something you can die from, e.g saws, trains, holes etc.

A tip is to use it on ctf_sawmill when you can triple jump (double jump + FAN) over a blocked place. I'm not that good at explaining but i can make a vid about it :p

Meh, it can't take out Ubers anymore, but it still should be banned from competitive play.

I think the scout update is the only one Valve really did wrong. The FaN sucks (Sucks even more after the recent update), Bonk is useless, and though you can double-jump with the Sandman now, I still don't find the loss of 30 health to be a sacrifice I don't want to make. That health is way more important than a ball.

But hey, if I don't like it, I can just play a non-"upgraded" scout. And I do.

FaN enables triple jump, which is useful in some scenarios, bonk is brilliant for getting by sentries, making it amazingly valuable in CTF servers, and the sandman brilliantly compliments the scouts lack of firepower but excess in speed and dodging. Not to mention it's fun for pissing off snipers with.

First of all to a scout who dies quickly, I'm sure 30 health is almost nothing. You can jump off a cliff if your running away and use the FaN's knockback to save yourself from killing yourself and run to a health pack.

The FaN is generally harder to use against good players and you don't have the ability to adapt to fighting groups as well as you do with the Scattergun...you actually need to strafe and dodge a lot more with the FaN, especially because it rarely kills strong classes in two hits unless they're completely point blank and you get lucky to hit the damage cap on both.

People only get mad at the FaN because it takes down weaker classes really fast. It's counterbalanced against tougher classes.

I think its a bit of a cheap gun overall, I mean people don't just use it to blast back the more powerful classes such as the pyro but it has a further range than the scattergun which I don't think is very fair. I guess the slow reload makes up for that.

you can't "catch" the ball. you get that achievement by either picking up an enemy scouts ball after he has thrown it, or throw yours, get hit by an enemy scouts ball, then hit him with it after the stun is gone

While I do admit, the sandman is pretty damn cheap, not everyone can do it multiple times. and the FaN, before it was buffed (which needs to be taken away), was a decent match for a scattergun scout. most of the time you needed to take out the pistol to finish the job, which should give you plenty of time to kill the fan scout.

The best ways to use Sandman is when your going for the intel, you can get away from enemy by stunning him. Its a great getaway tool, since Scout is not designed to kill everyone he meets! Its to get in do damage and get out.

it stuns players, leaving them 100% defenseless. sure, the -50% damage thing helps a bit, (and can actually make a heavy live through a taunt kill) but if you wait till the stun is just about to end, they still can't move, and the -50% goes away, and they are STILL powerless to do anything. I used to defend the sandman, but that was only because it was so much fun to use. It is a very OP weapon. not to mention it can stop ubers. a scout should not be able to stop an uber.
