I first heard about this from somebody's Let's Play Series of the game. It really helps to save a screen shot of this and the help of save states. Mushrooms are the only items I don't collect; but the only way to exit the bonus game is by getting stuff wrong or get everything. So I sacrifice a fire power flower and 2 mushrooms. Too bad we only get to save up 28 items total until they start getting replaced.
My most treasured suits are the hammer brothers, frogs, and bear statue. mushroom==evil
This is like the MOST CONFUSING tip ever. I would rather have fun and GUESS, than use your crappy cheat. Who cares if you get them all, you can get any of those items during the game anyways.
Before and after you flip the second coin card, look at how many coins you have. Before and after you flip a 1UP card, look at how many remaining 1UPs you have. Before you enter the game, look at your inventory list (press "B" on the map screen, Up & Down to cycle between pages). Complete the game matching Fire Flowers, Magic Mushroms, and Starmen, then check again.
Kinda obvious, huh? Of course, this is coming from the guy who spent years playing through the game as a child and always wasted items to reach the second inventory page, even after completing the game! In all the years my twin brother and I played it we had no idea that you could press Up and Down to cycle between four inventory pages. We even knew exactly how many items you could hold before the last would be replaced even though we never kept track of it on paper! ;)
If, for example, you match only one pair of mushrooms then fail the rest of the game, you get a mushroom in your inventory. So clearing the entire board gets you many items, 1-ups and coins.
i'm of the mind - if you have a power up, use it. when i was a kid playing games, i always conserved every item or power up and wound up beating games not having used any of those special items. then one day i realised i'm supposed to be having fun and started wasting them all, which is how i must have been playing this time round on mario. because i didn't even notice all those extra items from the card game!
The whole point of this strategy is to found out what layout i have. And yes there is more than one strategy, this isnt the only one, so that may work too.
THANK YOOOOOU

@VC, yeah i know what you mean. Often I will end the game with three P wings and tons of cool stuff i was "saving" but never used.

this map also seems to work for the game boy advance version. Thanks, very helpful to win all the items in one go.

Good to know the new version uses the same layout.

If you get the 20-Coins why dont you flip up the first card in the second row?
That way you would have a 50% chance to get a match, plus you know what kind of layout you have.
