Distributor seal leak.. my 99 coupe did it too.. Run your Vin on the honda Recall as well You may get you a New Ignition switch replaced for free recall(02-031) ... its not the problem but anything free is GOOD ..lol
Igniter? That's what I think is wrong with mine. $75 part. Does it ever not start back up? Like you have to sit a few minutes for something to cool? Checked your main relay?
Yes, I believe I may have finally found/fixed the issue. After having my entire distributor replaced in the Spring of 2011 after discovering that my car wouldn't start due to oil leaking into the distributor from a failing O-ring seal, I have not (so far) had any new issues even after moving to colder weather. According to the mechanic who replaced my distributor, this is a common issue with my particular year/model.
My chrysler cirrus did the same thing, it turned out to be some electrical cables that wear getting exposed to excesive temp, might be a sensor on yours or something, or something else electrical related. but IDK, just an idea.
Bro sounds like you have what we call a sugar tank somebody stuck s*** in your tank bro either a ping pong tht clogs but never stays clogged obviously when the pressure goes but deff bro yu have sugar tank
the same thing happened with my accord. it turned out that there was a defect in the radiator. the wire connecting from the radiotor to the transmission had fallen or cut off some how. so the transmission over heated and a leak appeared. after replacing the entire radiator, the car never had another problem again.
For my '95 Accord it was the ignition switch. $50 and an hour and a half later it's fine. There was a recall for '97 through 2000 or 2001. Call a Honda dealer and they should replace it for you.
mine the same but i check sparkplug it fill with engine oil all 4, so chang cover casket and sparkplug clean all oil, and chang all sparkplug wire and cab. run like new. the problem was cover casket it old worn out.
If it is any consolation have you tried the ignition switch or the fuse? (I don't know if the ignition switch is any different from the ICM but I read it on another website.) Just trying to help ^_^.
Someone in my family had a problem similar to this. It turned out to be the Ignition Control Module. The mechanics were all sure it was the fuel pump and i almost changed that until some dude on the street said his car was doing the very same thing and for him it was the ICM and man was he right. It runs like a clock now and has been for a long time.
I drove my car today and less than a mile later I make a right turn and it starts sputtering and it started losing power. I would push down on the gas but nothing it would just lag on trying to revive and just pulled over and all the power was dead. Not completely but ended up dying all the way.
1) I just removed aftermarket turbo
2)removed wiring from gauges that were all hacked up in fuse box
It's the MAIN RELAY (found under the dash on drivers side - the relay will say "Relay Ass'y, Main" and has a 8 pin socket)
The relay heats up and cuts off due to defective solders on the board.
The fix only requires you to remove it and to desolder and re-solder all the connections- it's really easy to do- You can find the fix for the relay here on YouTube
I did this fix on my Honda Accord 3years ago and have not had any more problems with the Main relay...
Hi , Have you found the problem ? My car does it too , Its a 98 dodge avenger. Like you it will stall within the first mile and wont do it for the rest of the day after. I havn't found the problem yet. The only difference is that instead of just stalling it will bog down really bad and eventually stall. Thanks.
I'm kinda having the same problem. Mine is also weather related. I watch a video here in the wellstech channel about how ignition modules work. you should check out. I think that could be my bad part, because the guy in the video says the ignition module controls the spark for only the first 15 min or so. then the ECU takes over. I have a 93 accord with a 2.2 engine. And when is cold outside, my car dies like in 5 minutes, then I have to wait about 3 minutes before it can start.it will onlycrack
I just change my ignition switch on my 96 Accord 4cyl and it was good for 2 days a started to die again. It's so dangerous while driving on the freeway.
Sounds like a bad ground somewhere causing either the computer, or fuel pump to lose power. Friend's car did this until he tightened the cables going to the negative cable on his battery.
I have a similar problem with my 99 accord. It's only cuts of on me when im driving and the weather is warm. When it's cool out the car doesn't cut off. Im call the recall center tomorrow.
@119droop:Did you read the description of his problem? Car dies within the 1st mile after seating overnight so it's not when it gets hot. As a mechanic, there's 3 things I've seen as the major causes of this problem. First, fuel pump dies intermitently, 2 camshaft position sensor (or wiring) and 3 crankshaft position sensor (or wiring).
Along with checking the ignition coil,, you can take your ignition module off and have it checked at any auto parts store. They will probably let you use the special tool to remove it, or do like i did, buy it , use it, and return it. Anyways , this is bouyt a $50 part , so make sure yours is bad before buying one. This will rule it out alone with coil if nothing else.
My van used to do that too.I was driving one day and my van stalled. It kept on dying until i got home.I went to my local repair shop and they said they could not find the problem.I kept going everywhere until one day i saw this repair shop and i went and told him about the problem.A few days later i got the news that the problems were caused by mice chewing some electrical wires.Maybe that could be the problem.
Hey I had the same problem. I have the exact same make and model as you, it turned out to be my car's ignition switch. To test if its your ignition switch try to turn your keys in the ignition back almost to the point where you are about to turn off the car and if the car dies you know you have a bad ignition system.
Well, I have more concrete evidence to report on my particular problem. It looks like it is weather (temperature specifically) related. I haven't had one single mysterious stall since April/May when the weather here in Florida warmed up (above 80 degrees). Yesterday morning, October 6, the thermometer said 71 degrees and after I started driving it down the road it stalled again. Two stalls within the first mile this morning. Anyone have any ideas?
@osuskates - Hey I had the same problem about a year ago, I have a 98 honda accord. It turned out that the distributor cap had a crack in it. If there is moisture in the air, than those beads of moisture is going to get into that cap, thus stalling the car or unable to start the car. good luck!
@osuskates I live in Florida too. And have a 1997 Honda Accord, this happened to me and I had to get the distributor replaced; cost me $300. But I noticed a different problem now, when idled or just started the engine shakes, why?
@osuskates I do believe the weather can cause some unusual stalls . Alot of people think it's all just mechanical but I have seen this . Like if it's too cold or too warm the car will behave differently in each different situation. Just always keep gas in the tank. And always make sure your battery is good.
check your Oxygen sensors, check the Crank shaft position sensor ---- that can be a problem when its worn down. Basically check all your sensors. Im pretty sure its not the Ignition coil but just in case check that also. also make sure you have no liquids leaking because that may throw off a sensor and cause it to malfunction and send the cars computer a false reading which may cause it to shut off also. just a few thoughts. comment on my channel if anything works
mine did this so i took it to honda cause there are recalls on it and its the ingnition switch and i havent had a problem since they fix it over a couple months ago
it's either not getting spark or not getting fuel. can u get it to die while its in park and someone revs it or something? u could check to see if any spark plug is working. if it is the plugs problem then all of them would go out not just one so it doesnt matter which one you pick. it could be your oxy sensor.. it could be telling your ecu that theres no oxygen. if you can make it die while its in park, you could diagnose it wayyy easier.
@tjcamby I have had zero issues with my car stalling unexpectedly since the weather warmed up. I am almost certain it is weather related, but have been unable to identify the exact cause. The stalling problems continued until late April when the weather began to warm up. I have had the ignition switched checked by the local honda dealership, and their test confirmed it is working properly. We'll see what happens as we enter the cold weather season again this fall.
@osuskated same issue with my 99 accord. I logged into honda owners link and it had a ignition switch recall. Make sure dealer replaces ignition switch for no charge. Just call american honda if dealer gives you a hard time. Its a safety recall so they will fix it again even if it was done before. Just talk to honda recall department. I had to use another dealer because original dealer was shady. NO replacement but they marked it fixed. After ignition switch no problems.
@osuskates I had this same problem on my car and my dad's (as we both have the CB7 accords) and it was the ignitor.
The ignitor lives inside the distibutor (second area of failure is the coil). I definitely do not believe its the main relay as it would not cause a stall and it would normally be a problem only on starting (not a running engine problem).
Changing your whole distributor (with qa working one from the junk yard) would be an option also.
I have a Honda Accord that is doing the EXACT same thing. We have had to replace the ignition module 3 times in the past three years. I would be curious to learn how you solved this problem. Thanks

It's the MAIN RELAY (found under the dash on drivers side - the relay will say "Relay Ass'y, Main" and has a 8 pin socket)
The relay heats up and cuts off due to defective solders on the board.
