You have Chomsky, a bit rough around the edges but pretty much a straight and intellectual gentlemen a man who believes in liberty and the principles of our nations founding fathers. Then you have Perle mastermind of the Iraq war and benificiary of 9/11 "the prince of darkness." A man who puts Israel before theUnited States, a man who was planning to destroy Saddam Hussein since the 90's. NOW TELL ME am I an anti-semite..
@hailtotheking324 I think Chomsky agrees with liberty because he's a libertarian socialist (a division of Anarchism), but I don't think he believes in the "principles of our founding fathers" as you chose to put it. Chomsky's personal studies and books regarding American power and history expose a different light (including comments from the Constitutional convention) of "the responsible class of men" you seem to admire. Your stretching it. Start reading.
Dr. Chomsky recently told Iranian TV that at the time the US invaded Afghanistan, they had no evidence that al Qaeda had done 9/11. See my video "Chomsky on Faith-Based Wars and 9/11".
Accompany any Chomsky binge reading with Machiavelli's 'The Prince' and Oscar Wilde's 'The Happy Prince and Other Tales'. You will see why once you read them. All else is bunk.
Nothing like the combined religious fanaticism of Chomskyites and bigoted Muslim hate-mongers. These videos are going to have lots of really well thought out comments I bet! "Chomsky is truth" "Chomsky is the way, the light" "I would suck Chomsky's ****".
the REAL libertarians are of the Frederick Bastiat kind. yes, the left were the true libertarians, but they were for Laissez-faire CAPITALISM and minimal to no government!
please read 'The Law'. it is only 52 pages long and written in 1850.
However, seeing as many are lazy, please read

if Bastiat were alive, he'd certainly be an Austrian economist
@jazzbo66zz --> You are right. What's scary about Perle is not his reasoning, but his moral depravity. Sadly, the kind of instinct that can SENSE this is NOT taken seriously in public discourse. And we know Perle is not the only person in our public discourse to bring this noxious personality into policy debates. There are too many like him with public clout.
You raise a good point. I do not believe Fascism can be accounted for by ideology alone. I have been dredging the literature of abnormal psychology for a number of years. Surprisingly enough the analysis of right wing ideology has been conducted in some depth but the personality that adheres to it remains difficult to explain. I think it was Hannah Arendt who observed that what makes an Adolf Eichman possible lies in the shadow of humanity and can only be comprehended by a madman.
@jazzbo66zz --> I think psychology already distinguishes between an ordinary madman and a moral madman, but I see what you are saying. I used to be a lawyer, and it surprised me how often you would find lawyers who really believed in a kind of defensive notion of the innocence of their clients. Loyalty and money would take away normal skepticism. Then I saw this kind of distorted loyalty in the business world, and you see it in religions. I began to think it's almost an exceptional person
@jazzbo66zz --> an exceptional person whose loyalty does not require that his "client" or "company" or "religion" be unimpeachable. Think about it. I may think I am capable of criticism of the USA, or criticism of the political parties, but are those MY clients, so to speak? I think each person has to identify his real clients, and THEN ask if he is capable of impeaching criticism. My hunch is that there are some people who are naturally more capable of critical thinking, but that these
@jazzbo66zz --> these people (more capable of critical thinking) are to some degree clientless. So even the ability to criticize or maintain skepticism could be seen as a lack of capacity for social loyalty. I think loyalty runs on a spectrum, and there are intensities of loyalty in people that essentially disallow meaningful critique. As soon as people abandon loyalty, I'm not sure if it can be recovered, so critique itself has a stronger effect, a dissident effect, than people realize.
@johnuio You are probably right about this as far as it goes. In the case of the usual suspects; let's say Perle Ashcroft Rove Rumsfeld & Pat Robertson, you are confronted with an assembly of elite sociopaths. These people might just as well be thought of as moral entrepraneurs. They advertise an ethic for interested parties to operate behind. To this extent the psycho-pathologies of power promote a bustling service industry in image management & public relations for socially pernicious ends.
Erich Fromm is pretty convincing on the subject of moral depravity assuming a critical role in the adjustment of individuals in adulthood to the dictates of Capitalism. In a manner of speaking the soul is traded away for a mess of pottage as the precondition for forming an isolated & false self capable of absurd acts of both self abasement & depravity. When the aspiration to love and be loved is displaced by the impulse to serve profit and acquire property we open Pandora's Box.
@jazzbo66zz --> First, this kind of attitude is almost cultural in business and professions. To me, the central instinct (beyond seeking profit/property) is an even purer notion of SUCCESS. But combined with some nostalgic ideas of "America" and "patriotism" and "LOYALTY," so I think it's more a Nationalistic Propaganda Idealism than a medical/mental illness. And the purest pundits of the bunch, like any really pure emulators of the "national personality," are just plain scary.
@johnuio This culture of corruption is a national malaise.I am aware of several streams of inquiry that converge here. One of the most interesting is that of Conway & Siegleman whose study of the connections between the psychopathology of religious cults and right wing political extremism in the US. Apparently the interpersonal communications upon which we depend are vulnerable to a contagion called an information disease that prompts us to stop thinking & adopt a set of precepts.
(cont.) This bizarre moral emptiness will blindly surrender itself to appeals made by suggestion & a technique of ideological vocabulary building capable of disabling the subjects judgement, adhering him or her to a set of precepts by induction. What takes place in these subcultures like business management is a kind of programming with symbols attaching to hightened emotional states that can be induced using prompts. This emulation as you call it is socially reinforced
@jazzbo66zz --> hehehhe... I think you're right. Interesting that connection between fundamentalist religion and the political right. They really are similar.
The term culture war originates in the literature of the Nazi Party. The propaganda appeared from nowhere after WWII aimed at elite groups infecting corporate religious and academic institutions. This programmatic material is insinuated subliminally, diseminated through elite institutions by way of technologies the Nazis could never have imagined. I am at a loss to explain why anyone in their right mind would want to replace a democracy with a dictatorship but these people are real.
@jazzbo66zz --> We all know there is such a thing as a world cultural elite. But I don't think it's conspiratorial, but rather an expression of a more cosmopolitan industrial social structure. We can criticize the preeminence of competition and try to suppress it, but is that really a solution? I say let the culture express itself as it will, for better or for worse, and we learn as we see who we really are. Humans are classist and humans are selfish, especially if this is encouraged.
@jazzbo66zz --> A true CORRECTION can only take place when really everyone can see the unworkability, either by insight or by calamity. Otherwise we just get superficial revolutions. As history works itself awkwardly, hopefully voices like Chomsky's (and others) will influence the mainstream conscience. Anything else to me will involve too much of an indictment of humankind, and I just don't think a general insight can arise from a mass indictment. People are not open to that.
Torture is seldom if ever directed at any logical purpose. The US deploys torture as a prerogative of empire. Kate Millet wrote a really great study of torture that few people seem to have read; The Politics of Cruelty. Another study of this topic in less specific terms but greater depth is Erich Fromm's; The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness. Naomi Klien's; The Shock Doctrine accurately pins the reinstitution of torture on the US with some justification.
I love Chomsky. I'd love to see him today, even at 82, call up and have a debate with someone like Rush Limbaugh or Mark Levin. Listen to him peel the skin off of neo-con liars of their breed. Well done Chomsky....hope you never die.
Capitalism is the wage slavery of immense humanity in a politically corrupt, manipulated MARKET SYSTEM OF ARTIFICIAL SCARCITY ,a tyrannical, destructive system to perpetuate poverty and exploitation in the interest of the ruling class. Capitalism from its mercantile plundering and enslavement of African natives to its Millitaristic rise of European Powers to World wars and Financial serfdom of the world has been a DISASTEROUS imposition .
"Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will do that . . . I want to tell you something very clear: Don't worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the Americans know it." - Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, October 3, 2001
Any facts to support this? Because if you known Chomsky--which apparently you do, better than anyone else in fact--you must know that he is a tireless historical empiricist.
@theloksh Chomsky's logic is bullet proof. I'm not a socialist or a libertarian really, I just know a sound argument when I see/read one. Seriously, read some of his stuff and try to find holes in his arguments.
Osama Bin Laden: In an audio tape in which he blames the West for climate change Bin Laden "praises the political analysis of Noam Chomsky."
Quote:
"Noam Chomsky was correct when he compared the US policies to those of the Mafia. They are the true terrorists and therefore we should refrain from dealing in the US dollar and should try to get rid of this currency as early as possible"...
What in the hell? This video is SERIOUSLY mislabelled. It should be "Introduction to Perle-Chomsky debate". Neither Perle nor Chomsky utter a SINGLE WORD IN THIS VIDEO. Be warned viewers--this is a six-minute long introduction by one random long-winded student or something, and then the moderator. AWFUL.
He's good, but I know someone who can cream him. In fact, I'm planning to set up a debate in the area. If it happens, I'll prolly film it and put it up.
Ok I am part Irish and Native american indian. So then I get by that right alone to bulldoze american homes and bulldoze all british londoners who live in Ireland down DOWN DOWN! get the hel out of Ireland you non Irish! I thank his books are great man. I personally don't have a problem with torture; I'm not offended by it in the least. I'd rather somebody be tortured and You and I die!
What a fucking idiot you are! People who are tortured will eventually admit to any crimes in which they did not commit simply because they do not want to be tortured anymore!
Torture is nothing more than a tool to get a testimonial from an innocent person to use to falsely convict the selected prisoner to use him/her as an example on the media to brainwash the general public!
@jappud you torture anyone properly and they will confess to anything, regardless of how strong they are. People break down physically and psychologically over time, and when you have them tucked away in a secret prison, you have all the time in the world.
@UFOCop Unfortunately, torture sometimes does work. Thats why its a moral dilemma. If it never worked it would never be used and there would be nothing to recommend it. Do you run the risk of getting bad info? Yes. But thats a concern with any method of interrogation and often times there are ways of checking info gleaned under duress with what you know to be true and see if it squares w/ reality. Your position has its virtues just dont console yourself with fantasies of torture's non-utility.
@rollotwomassey I do agree with you ,but I would say that the instances in which torture works are extremely rare.what most pro torture people cant see is the longterm resentment of the torturer. The mind that imposes a non torture mentality doesnt really understand why torture doesnt work and is likely to use torture when the enemy is at the gate, whereas an intelligent mind will see an easier subtler and more accurate way of extracting information without being clouded by vengance or beliefs

Professor Dershowitz killed Chomsky in the debate they had. Also, Dershowitz is a better scholar. I've got 4 of his books. They're great and he destroys Chomsky in many chapters.
you're not serious are you? well maybe you are, because you sound like the usual loser zionist who tries to flip the truth and make it seem like you guys are the good ones...nice try though, maybe you should read and listen to debates more closely, only then will you be able to make more appropriate comments other than the silly one you post here
Dershowitz is a well known fraud and a supporter of torture. I have read three of his books where he defends the use of torture against Palestinians, as well as his rabid watchdog tactics for AIPAC. He is basically the trigger for AIPAC when a politician criticizes Israel. His smear tactics are legendary. I haven't seen that debate but I am sure Chomsky did not get killed.
So true, ODDMANtheone, and BTW in the Dershowitz-Chomsky debate, as one can well imagine, Dershowitz was completely owned by Chomsky. It is hilarious and I highly recommend viewing it, it's right here on You Tube. Shows what a fraud and liar Dershowitz is. A must-see.
LOL!!! Anyone can go to the Chomsky-Dershowitz debate, ZDWmiamicane, and see how Dershowitz lied, obfuscated, and could cite no scholarly sources for any of his claims. He cites a conversation he had with Bill Clinton. Chomsky cites endless scholarly sources and original documents, telling us where to find them. Then Dershowitz tells the audience that Chomsky is citing sources he "knows they can't read," thereby insulting the audience. He also suggests putting the wall on wheels. Libel=Dersh.
ZDW, Finkelstein "destroys" all of Dershowitz's destruction in his book, Beyond Chutzpah. The fraud and plagiarist Dershowitz is completely exposed in Finkelstein's book, which debunks Dersh's The Case for Israel, and Dersh's claims that Israel has a lovely human rights record. His books are hardly scholarly endeavors, merely Zionist propaganda; whereas Chomsky and Finkelstein have scholarship which is beyond reproach, hence Dershowitz's desperate attempt to defame them both.
I've seen their debate, changing the numbers of refugees from 200,000 to 2000 in parts of Palestine, and blaming it on a "typographical error" is insane, he owes Finkelstein $10,000 as far as I'm conserned. He'll probably give him $10 and blame it on a speech error.
????????but that change went against his point!!!!!! why would he change it purposefully if it was evidence against his point?!?!?! its clear it was a mistake jesus christ people use your brains
It didn't go against his point at all. He said the number of refugees from that part of Palestine was 2,000, when it was really 200,000 gives strength to his argument above Finklesteins, but he got called on it. That's the only reason it would go against his argument.
@justgivemethetruth , spoken like a true hasbara soldier. Good for you, enjoy your delusion. The entire rest of the world, save you and your sick demented "friends" knows what happenen during Cast Lead. Dersh is a joke and u are a sick one to defend anything that comes out of his putrid, lying mouth.
WTF is wrong with you morons ... anytime anyone posts anything positive about Israel the morons attack and insult them.
Explain to me is you have a single brain cell in your head, why Hamas is firing rockets in Israel? After that, whatever they get they deserve. There is no need for it. Israel should just sit back and watch the fireworks right.
Call me sick, but who would defend a legal or moral code like that but the Muslim nations to justify another Muslim nation?
@justgivemethetruth No, you were not simply "posting something positive" about Israel. I have no qualms with that. You were pointedly denying Israel's atrocious human rights record, and defending Israel's governments' and military actions against the Palestinians. I know the Hasbara has a tough job cut out for them. But if you and your ilk (i.e. unthinking, uncritical, so-called "supporters" of Israel) actually cared at all about the CHARACTER of Israel, you would be questioning their crimes.

@justgivemethetruth the rockets are hardly a real weapon. They have an accuracy rate of below 1 percent. The rockets are on par with throwing stones at tanks. Hamas has a legitimate reason to fire the rockets becaues the Palestinian people are illegally occupied, denied basic human rights and access to water, food, economy, etc. Their land is systematically stolen, they are brutally tortured and intimidated. If you want the truth as your name implies turn off fox news and pick up a book.
God I love it when your ignorant morons say stuff like this ... do you know how fucking stupid it makes you sound?
Maybe as stupid as Hamas for throwing stones at tanks instead of making peace, or firing rockets for no point other than trying to get Israel to react. How stupid. Defend it all you want.
Yeah, comparing those Qasim bottle-rockets to the high-tech U.S.-made weapons that Israel uses to illegally occupy the occupied territories is very smart. The reason why Cast-Lead was even fought was because of the treaty which Israel broke in November, 2008.
@SweetDissident I am astounded that Dershowitz's and his propagandist, hostile and distorted outlook upon the world is actually a professor at Harvard. He was also the youngest professor ever at harvard. What does that say for the institution. This man is a fraud and a liar but the media and others will not stand up to him because he just yells louder. It is funny how almost all of the right wing propagandists just yell to get their point across because they have nothing to say.
This is an amazing "debate". Has there ever been such a complete outclassing of an opponent in any public discussion? I don't know of it. Perle starts out getting applause with every line, and by the end the audience is just laughing at his attempts to respond.
"In 1970 while working for Jackson (A Democrat!) Perle was charged with two heinous acts, spying for the state of Israel and leaking information about the CIA in regards to its nuclear deterrent program, to Russia"
Democracy Now of NPR has a great Chomsky set that they sell in their fund-raisers. It's a huge set with materials spanning over 20 years of Chomsky in audio, video and I think some writings as well. It's the most extensive Chomsky compilation I've seen yet, although further details are beyond my knowledge. Good luck :)
Wtf hitler's brown shirts burnt down parliament. Hitler then called a state of emergency and took power. Then declared himself fuher. He was only a chancellor beforehand. So why dont you go educate yourself.
You might do well to learn history. Hitler was never elected; he was appointed! And there is absolutely no way he would have ever been voted into power. Now why is it you believe something that is completely false? You have the world wide web at your fingertips and you choose to remain woefully ignorant. Please educate yourself.
one...i don't need the world wide web....two..i am a political science major and a history minor at my university...i've been studying this for a while now so I know what i'm talking about....u on the other hand don't know jack....ur probably some hippie that doesn't know any facts and finds little info from random websites...so believe me...i am educating myself
Way to skirt around the issue. Since you're so well educated why don't you astound us all and tell us what election Hitler was elected in. Who was he running against? What was the vote count? And what sources are you using? It would be easier to admit you're an ignorant fool, but by all means go ahead and give me a good laugh.
Oh by all means inform us of the date of the election and what the outcome was. Who was Hitler running against? What was his margin of victory? What's that? No such election? Hitler was appointed to his position and then usurped power? Oh, so you just made that part up about him being elected? When one of you idiots who think Hitler was elected can provide some facts to back up this basless claim I'll be impressed. Until then shut up.
Thank you, I was pretty much forced to look it up (:)). I have to point out that 40% of voters actually supported Hitler, even though he lost the election.
I dont care what Roy said, he is both heroic & brilliant & he clearly has won all debates on moral issues, his moral superiority surpasses most intellectuals.
Someone should do the math but I reckon Chomsky utters about 4 times as many words as Perle in this 'debate' as if he hasn't enough time to say all the things he wants to say in the time he has while Perle's 'world view' is stretched thinly across the minutes in a pathetic attempt to keep up with the sheer brilliance of Chomsky's mind and argument. A pure hero of our time, a Plato, a Newton, a Ghandi, a Beethoven, a Socrates of our time. If there is genius alive today this is it...
Allende helped his nation greatly, of course if you use the opinions of the corporations he kicked out of Chile as the sole source for your opinion he will seem like a devil.
Perles' resume follows him all the way home and as we know most famously includes his astonishingly naive and blinkered promotion of the grotesque misadventure in Iraq, which has dramatically enhanced Iranian influence and dramatically undermined western influence. One wonders just what it takes to be entirely discredited as a foreign policy analyst these days.
I've listened to all 18 videos. The sound quality on some of them is quite bad. So, Bovall, you might like to refer viewers, in the video description box, to the transcript of this debate at chomsky[dot]net.
Thanks for uploading this. In spite of the poor sound quality, this debate is well worth listening to! (Perle is publicly humiliated.)
the use of the cliche "cold, hard facts" shows you to be a robot incapable of original thought. Someone's ability to state a fact does not legitimize his ideology and does not validate his position if his position is based on a deliberate manipulation of the facts in support of an agenda which is immoral, unethical and hypocritical.
if you really think that, you have no idea what these men are actually saying to each other. It's interesting that you remark pearle as giving cold hard facts, when he is the one using emotionally potent, simplified statements to lead astray ones attention from the actual facts and their greater implications.
tharnax... you are rather dumb I must say. In all of your rants you have yet to make an actual argument. This would make you by definition, a propagandist. If you have ever followed Chomsky's references (vast) in much of his writings, you would see that he merely contains himself to facts and their conclusion following extremely simple logic and reasoning. Constraints that nearly every human being today would agree with (he talks about this quite a bit).
Though not a debate channel, C-SPAN2 on the weekends (BookNotes) has plenty of discussion, debate, viewpoints, and reviews. Pretty good, something for everyone, and good for getting in-depth points of view from varied vantage points.
Go sigh yourself, fool. Chomsky gives both sides of an argument "equal" consideration. He presents the truth from the point of view of what is best for mankind, not one segment of it. You lack COURAGE. Good day.
You've obviously never read Chomsky. His writings are thick with citations. Anyone - using his works as a guide - could find the references for themselves. His reference lists are exhaustive.
And with what references does Perle provide Chomsky? Perle conducts himself as if everything HE says is beyond reproach. What a presumptuous, fatuous, unctuous horror he is.
I agree, Chomsky is. Ok, just kidding. I don't know a lot about him but don't like the things I've heard him utter. But I understand if you don't like Perle although I don't necessarily agree with you.

You're wasting your time arguing with these idiots.
Chomskyites are complete zombies. They follow the writings and propaganda of their Cult leader as if he were a Messiah. They reject any facts that do not support his warped leftist-anarchist views (which means about 75% of history is rejected). Then they reach the age of reason (typically, about 45) and actually start to hear both sides of an argument. After which they slowly back away from this embarrassing 'academic'.
i think there's a bit of projection going on. chomsky like everyone who walks the earth has human failings, his determination to tackle mainstream thinking is what should be praised. oh and, is history not subjective?

Fair Statement. History is just like any other series of events, there are at least 3 sides to every story. Chomsky just happens to suspiciously take the side that is the most anti-American as possible. It's pessimistic and does a great injustice to our history; smears the USA out-of-context. A balanced view should always prevail.
cam't say i agree fella. i get the inmpression that chomsky drive is bourne more out of a comtempt for the pervertion of base american ideals and and ability to see the clear deceit of it's founding morality in the name of political pragmatism.
Not sure to exactly what you're reponding but ok. I guess he's not much of a debater if he can't prove his points in the time allotted. Perhaps he simply mispoke...

I read Chomsky for 6 years. He is a rank propagandist who is rightly ignored by the mainstream media. Except Al-Jazeera, they love his hatred for America, which is well-documented and routinely ignored.
Richard Perle is not used to dealing with propagandists like Chomsky who filibusters for hours. He realized about 20 min. into this that he made a colossal mistake: The moderator is an idiot that allows Chomsky to prattle on ad infinitum. This is not a debate in any meaningful sense.
you didn't answer my question. i know chomsky can be perceived as anti-american, -one of the 12 signs, you know, the branding of dissidents as "anti"- but perle is historically full of shit.
i'm asking you: can you defend perle and not come off as a douchebag?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Can you defend Chomsky and come off as unbiased and fair? No you can't, because you have bought into shameful propaganda. I know full well Chomsky is smearing his own country again, ignoring the context of events completely. Therefore, nothing constructive can come from a conversation between you and I. If you want me to refute Chomsky, simply read all of my comments on this series of videos. I am not (unlike Noam) going to repeat myself over and over.
Chomsky's left hand has forgotten more about langauge and culture than you could understand in three lifetimes. Maybe you should try learning about something other than your singular worldview and you could appreciate his persepctive.
I would love to see people that make these claims get into specifics, providing the context that negates what Chomsky is saying. For a while I was a bit skeptical of him, until I found that in 40 years the best anyone has come up with was he quoted a paraphrase of a quote by Truman ONCE instead of the actual quote, which he subsequently corrected. Maybe you would like to humor us tharnax and do what his critics fail to do...
"(Chomsky) his paycheck from a university which receives some of the largest payments from the Military Industrial Compex."
He has written/talked quite a bit about MIT and its funding/purpose with respect to the MIC. He's an open critic of his home institution. To state otherwise is to betray ignorance of his work.
"You've got to admire Noam Chomsky for the verbal speed with which he comes out from his corner: He hits you with five facts before you have had time to digest the first. Chomsky is an intellectual bruiser. Bang, bang, bang, he goes, and all that is left for slower-witted mortals is to hang on, 'rope-a-dope', like Muhammad Ali and try to survive until the round is over."

Start reading.

jazzbo66zz 1 year ago 2
@jazzbo66zz --> You are right. What's scary about Perle is not his reasoning, but his moral depravity. Sadly, the kind of instinct that can SENSE this is NOT taken seriously in public discourse. And we know Perle is not the only person in our public discourse to bring this noxious personality into policy debates. There are too many like him with public clout.
johnuio 1 year ago
@johnuio
I think it was Hannah Arendt who observed that what makes an Adolf Eichman possible lies in the shadow of humanity and can only be comprehended by a madman.
jazzbo66zz 1 year ago
@jazzbo66zz --> I think psychology already distinguishes between an ordinary madman and a moral madman, but I see what you are saying. I used to be a lawyer, and it surprised me how often you would find lawyers who really believed in a kind of defensive notion of the innocence of their clients. Loyalty and money would take away normal skepticism. Then I saw this kind of distorted loyalty in the business world, and you see it in religions. I began to think it's almost an exceptional person
johnuio 1 year ago
@jazzbo66zz --> an exceptional person whose loyalty does not require that his "client" or "company" or "religion" be unimpeachable. Think about it. I may think I am capable of criticism of the USA, or criticism of the political parties, but are those MY clients, so to speak? I think each person has to identify his real clients, and THEN ask if he is capable of impeaching criticism. My hunch is that there are some people who are naturally more capable of critical thinking, but that these
johnuio 1 year ago
@jazzbo66zz --> these people (more capable of critical thinking) are to some degree clientless. So even the ability to criticize or maintain skepticism could be seen as a lack of capacity for social loyalty. I think loyalty runs on a spectrum, and there are intensities of loyalty in people that essentially disallow meaningful critique. As soon as people abandon loyalty, I'm not sure if it can be recovered, so critique itself has a stronger effect, a dissident effect, than people realize.
johnuio 1 year ago
@johnuio You are probably right about this as far as it goes. In the case of the usual suspects; let's say Perle Ashcroft Rove Rumsfeld & Pat Robertson, you are confronted with an assembly of elite sociopaths. These people might just as well be thought of as moral entrepraneurs. They advertise an ethic for interested parties to operate behind. To this extent the psycho-pathologies of power promote a bustling service industry in image management & public relations for socially pernicious ends.
jazzbo66zz 1 year ago
@jazzbo66zz
When the aspiration to love and be loved is displaced by the impulse to serve profit and acquire property we open Pandora's Box.
jazzbo66zz 1 year ago
@jazzbo66zz --> First, this kind of attitude is almost cultural in business and professions. To me, the central instinct (beyond seeking profit/property) is an even purer notion of SUCCESS. But combined with some nostalgic ideas of "America" and "patriotism" and "LOYALTY," so I think it's more a Nationalistic Propaganda Idealism than a medical/mental illness. And the purest pundits of the bunch, like any really pure emulators of the "national personality," are just plain scary.
johnuio 1 year ago
@johnuio This culture of corruption is a national malaise.I am aware of several streams of inquiry that converge here. One of the most interesting is that of Conway & Siegleman whose study of the connections between the psychopathology of religious cults and right wing political extremism in the US. Apparently the interpersonal communications upon which we depend are vulnerable to a contagion called an information disease that prompts us to stop thinking & adopt a set of precepts.
jazzbo66zz 1 year ago
@jazzbo66zz
This emulation as you call it is socially reinforced
jazzbo66zz 1 year ago
@jazzbo66zz --> hehehhe... I think you're right. Interesting that connection between fundamentalist religion and the political right. They really are similar.
johnuio 1 year ago
@johnuio
I am at a loss to explain why anyone in their right mind would want to replace a democracy with a dictatorship but these people are real.
jazzbo66zz 1 year ago
@jazzbo66zz --> We all know there is such a thing as a world cultural elite. But I don't think it's conspiratorial, but rather an expression of a more cosmopolitan industrial social structure. We can criticize the preeminence of competition and try to suppress it, but is that really a solution? I say let the culture express itself as it will, for better or for worse, and we learn as we see who we really are. Humans are classist and humans are selfish, especially if this is encouraged.
johnuio 1 year ago
@jazzbo66zz --> A true CORRECTION can only take place when really everyone can see the unworkability, either by insight or by calamity. Otherwise we just get superficial revolutions. As history works itself awkwardly, hopefully voices like Chomsky's (and others) will influence the mainstream conscience. Anything else to me will involve too much of an indictment of humankind, and I just don't think a general insight can arise from a mass indictment. People are not open to that.
johnuio 1 year ago
Torture is seldom if ever directed at any logical purpose. The US deploys torture as a prerogative of empire. Kate Millet wrote a really great study of torture that few people seem to have read; The Politics of Cruelty. Another study of this topic in less specific terms but greater depth is Erich Fromm's; The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness. Naomi Klien's; The Shock Doctrine accurately pins the reinstitution of torture on the US with some justification.

It's well documented in psychological journals of a state that the human mind reaches during extreme conditions, such as torture.
The parts of the brain that focus on staying alive - increase in importance. Those of intelligence and commonsense - go down.
Torture someone, and they will reach a stage where they cannot think straight.

ODDMANtheone 2 years ago 4
So true, ODDMANtheone, and BTW in the Dershowitz-Chomsky debate, as one can well imagine, Dershowitz was completely owned by Chomsky. It is hilarious and I highly recommend viewing it, it's right here on You Tube. Shows what a fraud and liar Dershowitz is. A must-see.
SweetDissident 2 years ago 4
SweetDissident 2 years ago 8
ZDW, Finkelstein "destroys" all of Dershowitz's destruction in his book, Beyond Chutzpah. The fraud and plagiarist Dershowitz is completely exposed in Finkelstein's book, which debunks Dersh's The Case for Israel, and Dersh's claims that Israel has a lovely human rights record. His books are hardly scholarly endeavors, merely Zionist propaganda; whereas Chomsky and Finkelstein have scholarship which is beyond reproach, hence Dershowitz's desperate attempt to defame them both.
SweetDissident 2 years ago 77
I've seen their debate, changing the numbers of refugees from 200,000 to 2000 in parts of Palestine, and blaming it on a "typographical error" is insane, he owes Finkelstein $10,000 as far as I'm conserned. He'll probably give him $10 and blame it on a speech error.

If you want the truth as your name implies turn off fox news and pick up a book.

tharnax... you are rather dumb I must say.
You? Rhetorical bashing. *sigh*...

Though not a debate channel, C-SPAN2 on the weekends (BookNotes) has plenty of discussion, debate, viewpoints, and reviews. Pretty good, something for everyone, and good for getting in-depth points of view from varied vantage points.

Chomskyites. Some People...(sigh)
tharnax 3 years ago
Go sigh yourself, fool. Chomsky gives both sides of an argument "equal" consideration. He presents the truth from the point of view of what is best for mankind, not one segment of it. You lack COURAGE. Good day.
bapyou 3 years ago
Except the truth about the mysterious recently declassified govt papers that he references. He's never able to produce them.
Darling137 3 years ago
You've obviously never read Chomsky. His writings are thick with citations. Anyone - using his works as a guide - could find the references for themselves. His reference lists are exhaustive.
bapyou 3 years ago
No I haven't but I don't believe he provides Perle with anything to reference during the debate, which is what I stated in my comment.
Darling137 3 years ago
And with what references does Perle provide Chomsky? Perle conducts himself as if everything HE says is beyond reproach. What a presumptuous, fatuous, unctuous horror he is.
bapyou 3 years ago
I agree, Chomsky is. Ok, just kidding. I don't know a lot about him but don't like the things I've heard him utter. But I understand if you don't like Perle although I don't necessarily agree with you.
Darling137 3 years ago
Me? Dislike Perle? That's an understatement.

Context matters !

cam't say i agree fella. i get the inmpression that chomsky drive is bourne more out of a comtempt for the pervertion of base american ideals and and ability to see the clear deceit of it's founding morality in the name of political pragmatism.

This is not a debate in any meaningful sense.
tharnax 3 years ago
you didn't answer my question. i know chomsky can be perceived as anti-american, -one of the 12 signs, you know, the branding of dissidents as "anti"- but perle is historically full of shit.
i'm asking you: can you defend perle and not come off as a douchebag?
CheeezMaster 3 years ago

Can you defend Chomsky and come off as unbiased and fair? No you can't, because you have bought into shameful propaganda. I know full well Chomsky is smearing his own country again, ignoring the context of events completely. Therefore, nothing constructive can come from a conversation between you and I. If you want me to refute Chomsky, simply read all of my comments on this series of videos. I am not (unlike Noam) going to repeat myself over and over.
tharnax 3 years ago
you refuted noam chomsky... even if you didn't succeed, which clearly you did, i commend your vigor in undertaking such a daunting task.
ps - i don't "buy into shameful propaganda". i'm not some fucking monkey like the lion share of my peers.
CheeezMaster 3 years ago

Spectator778: You wrote...
