Most stereos today come with a set of mdf / plastic hybrid boxes that sound like $h!t. The only way to get good that you really want is to custom build the speaker boxes yourself. or spend a ton of money of on a pair of over priced fancy boxes at some rip off chain retailer.
@danrichards23 It may sound silly, but at lest their rating was real, now stereos and home theater systems show specs of more than 500w when in reality they aren't more than 200 w.
@danrichards23 you dont really need more than 35 watts a channel for even loud music with the right speakers. This was back when speakers were actually loud and had BASS!
This was JCPenney's answer to the market Radio Shack was selling to. The person who wanted true components and true high fidelity sound, but didn't know a woofer from a phono cartridge. Initially their models were crap, but they really improved when Technics became their main vendor. Some MCS versions were nicer than their Technics branded near-twins!
I had this back in the early eighties. This system was awesome. Receiver was only 35 watts with a pair of 12" 3 way speakers. Only 35 watts, very loud and the bass from this thing would shake the whole house. They don't make home systems like these anymore. Today's home systems can't shake the whole house with out a subwoofer. I now have a Sony 65 watts home theatre system. The Sony can't touch the MCS. It may have been 35 watts but it sounded like 100,
funny that I see this ad. I was in the local Goodwill and they had the receiver and turntable up for sale. No speakers though. The components were made exclusively for JC Penney by Panasonic. The receiver I saw included an 8-track recorder and was missing some knobs off the front. I passed on em both. The Turntable was nice except it is belt driven so that was not a selling point for me.
That MCS line was decent gear. Can't remember who made it for them. They ended making a big 120WPC or bigger receiver too.
35 watts then is way different than 35 watts now too. Big heavy 35 watts will surprise you. Big transformers matter compared to an opamp.

JC Penney is mostly clothing nowadays. Back then it sold electronics and other merchandise manufactured for it under license.
Anyone remember "El Tigre" mini-bikes?
