nobody is going to wear a GI in a street fight..this is why the GI is stupid and a dying tradition..I applaud the ufc(and new jiu jitsu schools like 10th planet..) for banning the GI
i do kyokushin and i personally like that more because i think it is a bit more agressive. But i think in like a streetfights this is more usefull because u also learn to handle urself on the ground, and we don't do that in kyokushin.
@roboto70 Jujutsu is the ultimate (and original) MMA. These guys just haven't practiced their strikes very well, apparently. A Jujutsu master strikes to shatter bones (and crush groins, lol)
@kenjutsukata1o1 a jujitsu master doesnt even spar fo gods sake.Jap jujitsu does and always did very little sparring and cetainly never used full contact in training strikes.Bone breaking strikes are largely fantasy that rarely occur in reality.
exiting? Like the guy that runs like a bitch at 4:32? (Like Jose Canseco debut in MMA) This sport is going to be exiting as soon as it has world class figthers, seems they are well-rounded, but they are not good at anything in particular. What makes MMA interesting is the fact that guys come from different disciplines and they combine them to create different stiles... here I just see a bunch of amateurs,
@roboto70 Guys in MMA have to practice every single part of the game a lot. The MMA where some people are ju jitsu and some are karate etc. is gone. You will fail if you only know one dicipline.
1) When I say "translation" I am talking of english spelling (as opposed to kanji, hiragana, and katakana characters).
2) Obviously different styles exist - and obviously they have chosen different spelling preferences - but the diferences in english spelling were ORIGINALY there because of translator discrepancies.
similar techniques, different training methods and lineages. japanese jujitsu, judo and brazilian jiu jitsu all split off from each other early last century.
exactly... they are too similar (seriously too similar) judo better in throws, brazilian in ground and japanese balanced... any of the three are EXCELENT
@toastyzone Jap style jujitsu very commonly have poor throws, poor groundwork and piss weak striking even though it includes all ranges for the simple reason that they rarely if ever spar .Im talking classical jujitsu, not hybrid styles some of which have a sporting format.
@billysue2 not true. My teacher has trained deeply in each style of the traditional jujutsu, not like others. He fight and win in tournaments of Judo, Bjj and "Luta Livre", as olympic wrestling. The TRUE jujutsu has no weakness in fornt of other styles, cause they use the SAME techniques :P... some teachers just learn the basics... you must STUDY to say you are a jujutsu practicioner
@billysue2 Jap style jujutsu usually have asskicking throws. Striking isn't used in traditional jujutsu, 'cuz its a retarded idea to punch someone wearing armor (samurai). The japanese are all for throwing their opponents. BJJ suck balls at throwing, but generally come out on top on the ground.
@veshkeat if youre talking classical jujitsu, they dont even spar so cant throw resisting opponents very well unlike say judo. Some modern styles are very like judo and spar plenty so will be effective enough.Striking has always been used extensively in jujitsu even the battlefield styles at points where there was no armour, and is still used in virtually every modern style, its generally what seperates it from jujitsu.
@billysue2 Traditionl jujutsu had no ADVANCED striking. They knew how to attack, but their art was grappling/throwing. A good jujutsuka should know how to throw ppl. Sparring or no, they practice throwing ppl who are resisting.
@veshkeat they cant strike for shit because they dont spar and cant throw for shit for the same reason. If youre not sparring ,that isnt resistance.Ive seen dan grades in jap jujitsu who cant throw strong novice wrestlers and judoka due to lack of timing from no sparring.
@dannykeat Another keat? :o thats not true. It's just spelling. Already BEFORE BJJ jujutsu was spelled jujutsu, jijitsu, jiujitsu and jiujutsu. Since it was originally written not even in katakana but in kanji, there is no right or wrong way of spelling it in the latin alphabet. Assuming maeda, who brought judo to brazil, pronounced it with a slight i sound in it, so the brazillians spell it jiujitsu, while kano pronounced it more like jiujutsu. The different styles are ofc taught differently.
@dannykeat You saying that there is a difference in techniques and training in jjujutsu, jiujutsu and jiujitsu. There isn't. The differences depend on the teacher, not the way it's spelled. The spelling doesn't indicate a different martial art as you said in you comment.
@veshkeat "brazilian jiu jitsu" is certainly different in it's training methods to most other schools. it's commonly spelled this way in brazil. if you walk into a school which calls itself "jujitsu", then you're probably not going to get BJJ.
most schools i've seen don't spell it the brazilian way, so it does make a difference.
but you're correct that there are many schools which use the different spellings interchangeably (apart from the brazilian way).
Ju-jitsu; Ju-jutsu; Jiu-jitsu; etc... are just variations in language translation that have all been previously applied to exactly the same art...
Yet there are certain schools that TODAY give a clear preference to certain spellings to distinguish themselves from others - but this spelling discrepancy all started from different interpreters, NOT from different styles.
Your right my dojo says jiu-jitsu but in japan its ju jutsu or ju jitsu, and BJJ is actually Brasilian Judo but the name jiu jitsu stayed there because of the japanese there
a lot of people dont know that all punches and kicks etc from muay thai have allways been a part of jiu jitsu too, and judo is taken straight from jiu jitsu.
the same goes for aikido.
somehow most people only give it credit as a component of mma, even though it has all the same techniques, plus 1000 more.
nothing missing to be filled with another martial art.
Someone's said this elsewhere, but it's a good point to remember none the less...
'pretty is not a requirement for any MA, effectiveness is.'
When you start to consider how much of the MA world seem to focus on nice looking forms and patterns, it is a refreshing change to see a video showing something more robust and direct with it's testing of methods.... good stuff.
I have to say being fairly new to Jujitsu (1 month+)... it's one of the few MA's I've done that I really want to stick with.
Ha this is in no way Jujitsu! lol a bunch of dirty fighting and no respect. Jujitsu is art and not a brute fight. Pride is making this art a bunch of non coordinated moves and desperation moves. Sorry guys I say two thumbs down.
This is a perfect example how jujitsu would look like in a real fight situation, which is what jujitsu was made for in first place (samurai's used it to kill/control/injure enemies in unarmed combat). I am pretty sure JJ was never meant to look nice, just effective.
@Threron But it looks nice ;) Of course not capoeira-like-nice. But it's very quick and dynamic, includes fast punches and kicks, throws and submissions. Never trained jujitsu, but always loved to watch it. It's as close to real situation fighting as possible. Respect for those fighters.
@Threron .... These guys aren't fighting to kill each other you can tell. IF they were with crappy windmill punching like that they'd get dropped. Good takedowns but piss poor stand up.
Actually it is MMA with the focus on Jujitsu. Since Jujitsu doesn't prescribes one form of technique concerning punching and kicking, you see a variety of martial arts (kickboxing) mixed with the Jujitsu basics. In addition, I'm not an expert regarding the rules of the Jujitsu tournaments, but it looks like that the Jujitsu rules are applied for this tournament. Anyway, very pleasant to watch! Well skilled fighters with great techniques!
Jujitsu has evolved over many centuries. Initially jujitsu was simply just that brutal, the point being survival, so yes it is as valid as any other form of jujitusu combat. Bad MMA maybe but without it MMA would not exist. Though admittedly it looks like a scrappy combination of basic judo and karate. Generally I would echo Threron's sentiments.
what you mean is it doesnt look like what you practise. How can respect be judged through this video. They are doing what would be effective in self defense.
I think the main reason you dont spar in traditional Ju Jitsu is because a lot of the strikes are taught as debiletating or seriously injuring moves... Such as the Head stamp on a lot of the arm locks from throws... and a lot of throat strikes. As far as Ju jitsu not teaching stikes as some have commented.. well I wish you would tell my Sensei because he has me kicking body pads till im ready to collapse! For me I learn my throws and chokes/locks etc from Ju jitsu and I spar at a pure mma club.
