This move is called the Swing cut, and your grip, while useable, can be changed. Your last three fingers do not have to be curled up, and can be hanging down. In the way I do it, I actually have my ring finger on the deck also, next to the middle finger that is holdng the deck, and the ring finger is moved over a little bit to make room for it.
