I played kibler at gp chicago he doesnt do it to impress people his face emotion never changes curling in his lip acting like hes thinking hes trying to get in your head
I played a deck that ran up couple different searches and would end up shuffling every other turn or so and would always think of this song when I would.
One of the best players in the game showing off the manual dexterity to one of the best club bangers of the summer. AND I didn't have to hear Evan Erwin's voice? What more could I ask for?
So basically... he's shuffling because he's nervous during a match? Or is this deck building? Absolutely no reason at all for this type of behavior at all! Keep the cards stationary, he risks dropping one!
@Zizhou No, I'm telling my opponent to stop distracting me. I don't think Kibler does that to distract his opponent, he doesn't need to do that to win. You obviously do though.
@mtgsean Man, ad hominem attacks right off the bat? I'm just trying to explain why some people do that. At competitive levels, any small edge you can gain without going beyond the bounds of the rules is a fair tactic. I'm not saying that Kibler necessarily does that for that reason, but I am saying it why *some* people do. For the record, I'm fond of simply placing my hand on the table and picking it up as needed.
Shuffling hides which cards you think are important so that they can't discard it or anticipate what you will do. Very important after drawing since you can guess what's in their hand if they play their top card.
Gotcha - Whenever an opponent audibly flicks the cards in his or her hand, you may say "Gotcha!" If you do, return Stop That from your graveyard to your hand.
@Nukeaholic I could easily be wrong, it's just that I started playing in Alara Block and so I chose Alara and beyond cards. I saw a flash of gold, so I'm hoping it's Knight and not Gaddock Teeg or something. and I think I recognized the mostly black with a bit of red art of Tec Edge, but he only has one in his build, so that could also be completely wrong.
That's nothing. In the quarter final coverage of Pro-Tour Philidelphia we can watch Josh Utter-Leyton and Alessandro Portaro shuffle cut and mulligan from 32:00 on for an astounding 9 minutes 28 seconds of riveting shuffle and cut action. Since Alessandro had to mulligan to 4, most of that time was spent with one player idly shuffling for minutes on end while the other stares blankly into space, all for a mostly foregone conclusion that Josh would win up 3 cards and going first. Great coverage!
it has a lot less to do with actually suffling/rearanging his hand, and a lot more to do with just habit. Obviously this is an extreme example of it but the purpose is to just occupy your hands while your thinking
It is obnoxious, you can move cards around a little bit and plenty of other ways to prevent your opponent from knowing what you drew. I agree with other people, that is un-sportsman like behavior to do it like that.
It is very annoying when people sit and do it loudly, only douchebags do that where I am. It doesn't "mess up" the other person, and if it did, does that feel good to balls someone up by flicking plastic around in your hands???
@banihex I do it unconsciously when I'm thinking, and sometimes, flashing the cards where I can see them in rapid succession reminds me what I have and the interactions between each of them. Mostly, though, it's just habit. People don't do it purposely to be douchebags. If an opponent asks me to stop, I would stop.
@SilentViolins yes of course, not everyone is a douche, and I always assume people mean well first before I think they mean harm (in any situation). Playing MTG, I imagine you are a bit smart, educated, well rounded etc, friend, so I am sure you can quit the habit :)
If people can quit hard drugs, we can quit flicking plastic in our hands :)
btw while you're at it could you just stop blinking for a few minutes. You can blink whenever your eyes get dry sure, we don't want your eyes to start hurting, but you've been blinking way too often for that and it's starting to get annoying.
@banihex You're making fun of people's tics? When I hold a pen in my hand, I spin it w/o thinking. When a poker player sits at a table, he shuffles his chip stacks w/o thinking. This is the same thing, a lot of magic players shuffle their cards w/o thinking. When your mind is occupied with something, your subconscious processes take over for other parts of your body, and most of the time they do tedious repetitive things with them. It's really ignorant of you to call someone obnoxious for that.
@LastSasquatch I didn't make fun of anyone or their tics, come on friend dont be like that, and I just said most people aren't being douchey. But come on, we are humans, we can drive cars, talk on phone, fly to the moon. We can stop flicking cards in an obnoxious manner!
Yes, breathing is subconcious, blinking is subconcious, and so is digestion. But, shuffling your cards very loudly and in an obnoxious manner, like in the video, is uncalled for. Sorry you were offended.
Regardless of how awesome Kibler's shuffling is in this video, the music (and I use that term *very* loosely) makes me retch. "Party Rock Anthem" is pure auditory fecal matter from a group of talentless hacks that probably only got a record deal because they're related to someone in the business. (ToddInTheShadows did a video on this track. STFW and you'll find it)
It helps keep your opponent from knowing what you've drawn that turn. For instance, if you draw a land and then slam it into play, your opponent knows you didn't draw any action that turn.
It's also just a nervous tick people acquire after a while.
That would be retardedly annoying, as I have faced opponents like that. I dont fidget, I lay my cards face down if I already mentally made decisions, and stare at or banter with my opponents (depends on his demeanor). This kinda hand shuffling would make me want to punch him.
