@salman125 i know. We never armed the Taliban. The West finances the mujahideens and the training was done by Pakistan's military. Yes there are some member from that group joined the Taliban(who formed in 1994) but The Taliban as the former government of AF and the current insurgents did not exist as such in the 80s. The West who armed the mujahideen goes under the name "northern alliance" and they are fighting with NATO. I suggest read Steve toll ghost wars and you get the better picture.

This area at the border to afghanistan is one of the taliban's savehavens today. you're right, America supported the mujahideen fighting the russians but like you said in your comment the radical ones of them were future taliban. so in someway the US supported both, their future allies (northern alliance) and their future enemies.

@AgrivatedKillah but the fact remains both had to get go in with over 100,000 soldiers, ill give you some stats. there are 132,203 Nato soldiers in afghainstan, in vietnam by 1965 there were 125,000 soldiers a comparabale number. there have been so far 4071 (including contractors) nato deaths in afghanistan meaning 1/32 have been a casualty so far, in vietnam the death toll by the end of 1965 was 2264 a kill rate of 1/55..if obama gives full commitment hes lbj with the mother of all quagmires =)

Yes there are some member from that group joined the Taliban(who formed in 1994) but The Taliban as the former government of AF and the current insurgents did not exist as such in the 80s. The West who armed the mujahideen goes under the name "northern alliance" and they are fighting with NATO. I suggest read Steve toll ghost wars and you get the better picture.

The USSR knew real evil when it saw it, and it's a tragedy that it wasn't fully able to bring about the positive changes in Afghan society, such as the liberalisation of women, and the attempt to reduce the influence of religion. Alas, the Americans, then critical, are trying to do the same now! Maybe they should have let the Soviets deal with it - they were doing a better job.

Taliban was formed by CIA (under a different name) in the 80s to fight soviets. They are paying Taliban from american taxes to destabilize the region and install their own regime.
Banning their religion was the first step to bringing them out of medieval lifestyle into Communism. Sharia law is even now seen as too harsh and barbaric.

@Arobein no, the taliban was not formed by the CIA. the CIA funded everyone defending their country against the soviets. it was pakistan who deliberately funded the nutjobs because they wanted a fundamentalist regime

Terrorists don't come from a single country like Afghanistan or Iraq. And killing thousands of innocent civilians doesn't remove the threat of terrorism. They won't even burn the poppy field that are used to make drugs that supposedly sponsor Taliban. What are you going to say about that?

@Arobein they wont burn the poppy fields mate because if they did they would be destroying he income of thousands of farmers and their families and would create such a massive hatred from them that the taliban would have a recruiting bonanza. terrorists may not come from a single place but they do seem to like to live in areas with fundamentalist regimes that support them.

@Arobein mate obviously people with more knowledge about the situation have analysed it and know that the benefits of burning the crops are massively outweighed by the hatred that it would create amongst the local people. the only way they are going to win the war is if they are going to win the support of people, and they're not exactly likely to be able to do that if they go driving thousands of farmers and their families into their arms

@AussiePolitics In addition to my previous comments - Communism doesn't make "the lives of the ELITE better", that's what Capitalism does. Communism is trying to make the gap between rich and poor as small as possible. Communism would've brought free education, medicine and modernized agriculture to Afghanistan, but instead they are still staying in the dirt.

@Arobein actually yes, communism in china, the soviet union etc has not made the lives of the ordinary people better. tens of millions starved in china and the soviet union as collectivist policies were proven again and again to be too incredibly inefficient to provide for a nation's needs. all communism has created is barbarity and repression. capitalism is the ONLY system that has brought millions of people out of poverty. care to name a SINGLE communist nation that was FREE and PROSPEROUS?

Free? Only recently did they make black people equal to the whites, but native americans are still being repressed. And they were Capitalist from the beginning. @Arobein the only nations that have been able to lift millions of ORDINARY people out of the dirt have been capitalist nations. they are the ONLY ones where people were free to express their opinions and elect their leaders. obviously all countries have things they are deeply ashamed of, however you compare the millions of people repressed and starved in the soviet union and other such examples of attempted communism and its no comparison to the capitalist nations
