Merckx was great alright but, if he'd had to race against Lance Armstrong when Armstrong was at his best Merckx would have had to back off on all the additional racing he did in order to have a chance against Lance. The two can't be compared by their palmares because of how the game changed. In today's world Merckx could not have raced every race and still come out on top. Just my opinion and it could be wrong.
The question is, how would they have fared on each other's "turf"? How would Lance compare if you took him back to 1971, made him resort to primitive training methods and race all season long? And how would Merckx compare if you brought him forward to 2001, make him concentrate on one race a year, and gave him the benefits of modern scientific training? I'm not sure Merckx would climb as deftly as Armstrong, but I also don't think that Armstrong would ever master the cobbled classics.

It's hard to say who was the best. It's important to remember that Coppi was still for 5/6 years during the second world war, in the best moment of his career...
But Coppi had a weakness compare to Merckx: He was like many italians (Pantani, Basso) a great climber, and unlike for italians a great time trialist, but he was never a great sprinter.
Merckx had simply the best total package in cycling history. He was one of the best time trialists (like Armstrong, Hinault, Indurain, Anquetil), one of the best sprinters (Zabel, Petachi, Cipollini) and in the mountains strong enough to match the best climbers (Pantani, Bahamontes, Van Impe).
The bikes they would have ridden weighed a ton and had virtualy no stiffness in the bottom bracket - plus there was very little in the way of diet and training advice therefore, you've GOT to agree that Merckx was the best ever given the amount of races he won

@walter4092 : in 69 werd hij vrijgesproken (het was overduidelijk dat de Italianen Merckx zo uit de race wilden zetten), in 1974 testte hij positief door een hoestdrank (waarvan je eerder trager dan sneller gaat rijden) en in 1977 testte hij positief op een nieuw product (pemoline) dan net op de dopinglijst stond (in de Tour van 76 testte zoetemelk ook positief op pemoline en mocht gewoon uitrijden). Merckx is nooit betrapt op het gebruik van bloeddoping of amfetamines.

When I watch a video of Merckx riding I'm filled with energy and want to go out and charge down the road on my racing bicycle which happens to be the eddy merckx super competition 102 by Falcon Bikes 1972. I look down at his picture on the headtube and automatically gain 2mph.

Merckx was great alright but, if he'd had to race against Lance Armstrong when Armstrong was at his best Merckx would have had to back off on all the additional racing he did in order to have a chance against Lance. The two can't be compared by their palmares because of how the game changed. In today's world Merckx could not have raced every race and still come out on top. Just my opinion and it could be wrong.

The question is, how would they have fared on each other's "turf"? How would Lance compare if you took him back to 1971, made him resort to primitive training methods and race all season long? And how would Merckx compare if you brought him forward to 2001, make him concentrate on one race a year, and gave him the benefits of modern scientific training? I'm not sure Merckx would climb as deftly as Armstrong, but I also don't think that Armstrong would ever master the cobbled classics.

as you say it is completely impossible to compare the two cyclist as its the same with any sport its about the period there were involved in. if merckx did ride when lance did his training would be completely different and he'd be a completely different cyclist. also merckx didn't just race the tour de france he rode loads of other races to win, as well as breaking the hour record.

The bikes they would have ridden weighed a ton and had virtualy no stiffness in the bottom bracket - plus there was very little in the way of diet and training advice therefore, you've GOT to agree that Merckx was the best ever given the amount of races he won

He won several Times the Tour of flanders, Parix Roubaix, Liège bastogne Liège, and 5 Milan San Remo...

As huge a fan of Lance that I am, I recognize that Merckx was THE greatest of ALL time.
Lance himself would tell you that!
I followed his races back in the 70s when I was a teenager.

You cannot compare Merckx times and Armstrong times. It's harder to do what the "Cannibal" did nowadays. But, anyway, I think Merckx is the greatest ever, then comes Indurain and Armstrong is third overall.
But I give more credit to Armstrong victories.

Merckx IS the greatest hands down. The Tour requested him NOT to ride in one year since because he was so dominant. That is unheard of today. BTW, he won every race possible and many multiple times.

Eddy Merckx was one of the Greatest bikers of all time!! That's a given. But as we all know Lance does have 7 tour de France wins! So to say Lance is no where good as Merckx is just ignorant! Can't we just say they were both AMAZING!!!!!

Lance is nowhere near as good a cyclist as Merckx was. Merckx would literaly almost kill himself from riding so hard to win.
