ive commented on his Pinky for years, I never seen another use his Pinky as a weapon on the guitar. watch it and it strikes without warning. How Why What da fck
I agree with some of the other comments here... maybe he's not the first guitar-player I listen to when I want to really enjoy music. But that doesn't mean I don't listen to the Awesomess that is Guthrie Govan!! =P Simply put... he's too good not to listen to...
he didnt rape the strings he Raped Joe and Joe has the means to put something like this out and why the greats dont I have no idea just grateful GG did it. A lot of my faves are GG just killing it
Hmm amazing speed, techinique, phrasing etc...but he just doesn't play anything that really sings to my soul (I'm agnostic but you know what i mean). I guess that's why he isn't recognized as one of the greats.
Your brain must have to be wired in a certain way to enjoy his work. He needs more of that "tell a story with your music" factor for me to enjoy it.
@Innercynic He actually plays great jazz, check out "Guthrie Govan playing to Larry Carlton style track". Speed is a bigger part of jazz than blues, and it really lets him play without feeling restrained. Though I totally agree with you that he doesn't sing to my soul, atleast while playing blues.
@Innercynic It's difficult to tell a story with such a simple background, and doing an improvisation for a lesson which is really not your style. Watching this series of videos by Guthrie is not the best thing you can watch from him.
@uur444 then I feel sorry for you my friend because you don't have ears, nor eyes. Guthrie Govan was as good as Zakk Wylde the FIRST DAY he played guitar.
@dzaijn well, what sounds good and what doesn't is subjective, now, more technical, less repetitive, more versatile, and has more knowledge about music in general (or at least shares more knowledge) yeah. you're right. but i wouldn't say any guitarist is "better" than other, since it's art you know...
Guthrie is GREAT! So is Joe. Joe is the most melodic player i've heard. I mean, his compositions, his phrasing! But Guthrie is Guthrie, and he can do anything. I like Guthrie very much but Satch stays my favorite.
this is really really good...but can he do this on a big stage? why didn't his parents give him a first name instead of a last name used like a first name? Just kidding...this guy smokes!
This is one player that is so good that you really aren't exaggerating when you say, "He's got more talent in his little finger than ...." Check out the bend @:40 and the blistering runs @:56!!!
Killer playing, killer player, and... while I love Satriani, it sounds much more like a Buddy Guy groove. Does it matter? No. All that matters is that THIS CAT CAN PLAY!!! Good Grief, I've been humbled, once again. Oh well, there's hardly anything more inspiring to me than getting my butt --- kicked! Guthrie's on the cover of the July 2011 Guitar Player, which should up his profile. Clapton needs to invite Satch and Guthrie (and Philip Sayce), to his next Crossroads gig.
@shadowofthenighthawk if he is attempting a satch sound and my ears dont decieve its a Vox Big Bad Wah, however his usual wah is a Guyatone Wah Rocker 3 =]
no guthrie improvises like god?no thats why is jezus, thats why hes been send back because they found his fast mindles lick too unbearable for heaven.satch isn't the best but still has some great albums and songs thats stand by due to the effectivnes and melody that speaks logic.
@oscarsstuff Yes he can. And he improvises great. Search for Joe Satriani - Made of tears. The long live version. Then you will see how good he is in improvising.
@CREWDOG289 because being able to emulate other players makes you a better player. for exmaple, i can almost emulate kirk hammett, but i dont play like him. i just use his ideas every now and then. tools for the toolbox my friend.
@hyperboogie Guthrie did not know that these were "blank Blank" style tracks when he recorded them. He simply went in there and they said "jam to this".
guthrie's incredible...but somehow for a slow blues like this...I'd rather hear stevie ray vaughn...or better yet, hendrix...guess I'm old school....that's my only criticism of govan.. his slow vibrato isn't quite what either of those guys had...but for spicy fast ones,...hard to beat gg...(not that my vibrato is even is the same league..)
This guy reminds a lot of Satrani....he's fast, tasty and plays witha ton of feeling. Some guys are quick and run some mean scales but they have no heart...this guy has it all.
i saw this man at a blues fest in italy, a very under rated guitarist, him and his band put on a great show, also got to see joe satriani that same night,it dont get any better than that.
Man i discovered you 2 days ago and i am watching your videos all day!I hear and see a perfect Balanced playing between melody, technics, speed and soul phrasing! you are my hero :)
I totally agree with uptoherewith, whilst Guthrie's technique is superb, i get tired of listening to guys like him very quickly. I much prefer listening to guys like Derek Trucks, Peter Green, Kossoff, Bonamassa etc. who have more space and what i consider soulful playing (im not saying guthrie or other shredders dont have soul). Again, just my 2 cents.
@vtwin1 that's funny because guthrie himself was wary of shredders because of their playing style. I don't think he's a shredder, he plays with more of a legato style but this video is him shredding.
I LOVE shredding! Yet , when it comes down to judging who's good and great the vote always goes to who can take ONE note and make your spine tingle.
I truly appreciate all of these technical prodigies but I always find myself empty on them. OMG I wish I could play like them!! Nonetheless the quest for guitar hero always leads to feeling as has been proven by the lesser technical heroes like Clapton, Gilmour, Vaughn, Trucks, Haynes, etc
Satch is great but his technique is always overrated and this is no comparison because Guthrie blows Satch away in every department. Even though you prefer Satch, which is fine, this is just a fact.
@LEOJ024 - Because I have every album he's ever made. Every G3 he's ever been on. Because I've seen him solo twice, and on the G3 tour once. Because I've listened to his music for the last 15 years. Because I can play a small percentage of his material. Because melodically, he is my favourite guitar player by a long shot.
I'm not dissing Satch in any way, how could I? But facts are facts, he knows what he's good at, and what he likes doing, and never strays from that path.
@Hardysamnin i gotta agree Hardysamnin - I think this makes my 14th year playing - Satch was in every way that counts, my "teacher" too but when Guthrie showed up there's just no denying it. Guthrie has the musicality to rival Satch and the technique to stand toe to toe with ANYONE....Vai, Batio, Yngwie, Lane, Becker...anyone.
I agree, this is SO unlike Satch, it's ridiculous! (The backing track, I mean) Talk about using the Lord's name in vain! Luckilly, Guthrie is worth listening to - takes any pain away!
hate to say it but this is nothing like satch. this is more of a vai or andy timmons style track. the only thing similar thing to satch that hes doing is using a wah. i understand the title says satch style "track" but if your gonna play on a satch "style" track then atleast phrase like him. dont get me wrong GG is insane and technically more advanced than almost every guitarist in the world but he lacks that satch/vai feel, atleast in this video he does
I love Satch's playing and admire his technique, and I'm flat-out terrified of G.G. I do have to ask: In what sense does this backing track have ANYTHING to do with Satch's style? It sounds more like Chicago blues to me, more like the kind of groove Gary Moore would be playing than anything Satch has ever done. That being said, this must be as well: Just DAMN.
@runescapeownyawe no its not......are you kidding me this videos playing is nothing close to satch. this video is more of a big band blues style track in which joe has no affiliation with
@runescapeownyawe ther is nothing satch about this besides the wah pedal. satch is more of an extended pentatonic guy and even in blue songs he would switch harmonic minor by the 2nd turn around and im telling if you listen to satch as much as any good satch fan does you would be able to see that this sounds nothing like him....
Look Guthrie is a great guitarist, so is Joe. but people forget its composition that makes someone a good musician. Look you might play guitar like a god, but if you can't make yourself a good composition than you are still nowhere.
Oh jeah and for people who think satch his technic is way worse then the guitarist of nowadays. Go check Joe Satriani crushing day live ;) anyway both two great guitarists
@1BigMeanMexican Im not really sure if your being nice, or a sarcastic dickhead, but either way, your right! =P i can see the merit in loving either guitarist more. both are gods =D who are we to really judge? especially me cause i suck =] haha oh well. take it easy man
yo guys, just read some comments regarding joe vs guthrie.guys pls i have been playing for the past 40 yrs and can tell u satch is superior in everyway, much more so the goavn, that said govan is amazing and clean as any,but to compare him with saint joe is just wrong.hey we all have our own opinions, but i still love guthrie.GREAT PLAYER.sorry fellas.
@cfv22 Dude, believe me, im a massive, massive Satch fan, he's one of my idols, but this guy's obviously better. no disrespect to Satch, cause he's obviously a god and few can even come close to even getting near close enough to touching him, but Guthrie is a fucking monster. anyways, peace man, and keep rockin the 6 string =]
here we go AGAIN forgetting that MUSIC IS ABOUT MUSIC why the heck are we comparing?? Guthrie is someone..Vai is someone else..satch is someone ELSE..music is expression..Vai has an amazing imagination that gurthie sites as one of his influence...satch was always the rockie boy that knows how to take you to space with his ideas..and guthrie..was always the fast pace blues/fusion monster that we all admire they are all great in their own right..remember that same applies to all musicians
even though this backing track wasn't supposed to be a shredding one, or for that matter loud and crazy at all. It was very nice. Messy, as soloing is inherent in, but still nice.
His fingers legit look like little spiders running around!!! So nasty!

@FreedomZealot thank you! somebody realizes it

Wow...it's not every day you find a guitarist with the level of skill who still has that much soul...

Go check Joe Satriani crushing day live ;) anyway both two great guitarists

yo guys, just read some comments regarding joe vs guthrie.guys pls i have been playing for the past 40 yrs and can tell u satch is superior in everyway, much more so the goavn, that said govan is amazing and clean as any,but to compare him with saint joe is just wrong.hey we all have our own opinions, but i still love guthrie.GREAT PLAYER.sorry fellas.
cfv22 1 year ago
@cfv22 you think he is superior technique wise?
Kingding6 1 year ago
@cfv22 Dude, believe me, im a massive, massive Satch fan, he's one of my idols, but this guy's obviously better. no disrespect to Satch, cause he's obviously a god and few can even come close to even getting near close enough to touching him, but Guthrie is a fucking monster. anyways, peace man, and keep rockin the 6 string =]
codeman11845 1 year ago
here we go AGAIN forgetting that MUSIC IS ABOUT MUSIC why the heck are we comparing?? Guthrie is someone..Vai is someone else..satch is someone ELSE..music is expression..Vai has an amazing imagination that gurthie sites as one of his influence...satch was always the rockie boy that knows how to take you to space with his ideas..and guthrie..was always the fast pace blues/fusion monster that we all admire they are all great in their own right..remember that same applies to all musicians

@danyjr - I'm sure if all you can say about him is he's an ugly nerd, he would take that as huge complement ;)
And you're right, that is about the only detrimental thing to say about him.

nice work but no real Satriani....just one....and technique

even though this backing track wasn't supposed to be a shredding one, or for that matter loud and crazy at all. It was very nice. Messy, as soloing is inherent in, but still nice.

I think I've just heard god. Does anyone know what guitar he is using?
