One lesson from Iceland: the people are sovereign. Not the government, not the banks, not to the corporations, not to the stock market. A country belongs to its people. Let this seed spread into the rest of Europe. Let the REAL people rule. Those who make a living working honestly and supporting their families. If we don't turn against the power hungry, the unscrupled and the filthy rich, we're teaching our children a terrible lesson: be an arrogant bastard if you want to have a future.
@estroncioperez Indeed. Small and poor countries have nothing to gain out of EU whatsoever. The big countries just suck the marrow out of their bones. It is a neo liberal empire.
@Illvaettr it's not "the big countries", I think. It's the oligarchies. The same financial and political oligarchies that are sucking the marrow out of the bones of their fellow citizens. Minimize te government. Power to the citizens.
@Giacomo11258 Oligarchs exploiting their respective countries' people is something that you can see in every country; the capitalists are the same everywhere. The EU is a neo-liberal experiment, and it's arranged by the biggest economies of Europe, which it also favours the most (note: not the people). The "PIGS" countries have been heavily exploited by France and Germany in form of usury loans; THAT is why they are so eager so "save" "Greece's economy" (in fact, their own economies).
Hopefully, they will not succeed, and this empire will fall apart, just like Rome fell apart. The events like those in Greece are healthy reactions to the sickness of capitalism. Now that the fear of Italy's economy is growing stronger within the walls of power, I hope the Italians will put down their feet like the Greeks.
I agree with you except that I find it important that all the people in Europe start building their reaction to this mounstruosity on a strong foundation, on a common tenet: a country, any country belongs to its people, not to its government, not to its oligarchs. If we topple our regimes relying on a new fearless leader, we are bound to fail again. It's up to the people of Europe to build new systems in which the citizens delegate to their politicians the lesser share of their sovereignty.
knowing that they can revoke the power that they delegate or change the rules by which power is delegated to a government. There is a mountainous country at the heart of Europe that works like that, and eurocrats in Brussels and elsewhere are trying hard to destroy its reputation, its currency and its economy. Thus far they have failed miserably.
@Giacomo11258 That, which you say, I haven't opposed to. Any government will keep doing what governments always have done; protect the interests of the priviliged classes (everything from a communist party elite to scratching the back of managing directors and bankers). I agree that new systems are necessary, and that these should come from the roots. It would save much time and energy to define and revaluate "democracy". I'm thinking about the Arab revolutions and their potentials that have
Icelanders should not pay simply because the uk and the dutch governments should have had legislations and laws in place banning cowboy bankers.... of course I feel sad for the normal people in the uk and holland who lost money but solving this issue by implementing the uk terrorist law to me displays very clearly the abilities of the uk government.
Refusing to repay the debt is only further damaging Icelands economy because the IMF will not help them until there are sure they can be trusted. If people vote to refuse paying the debt then Iceland will be isolated, broken and helpless. wake up people and smell the coffee
Im afraid your wrong. The Icelandic government agreed with the bailout of icesave by the Uk government and so are now duty bound to repay the amount as agreed. Without the bailout many Icelandic investors and businesses would have lost everything. saying you dont owe shit is merely burying your head in the sand. Its interesting to note that before the bankruptcy of iceland they showed no interest in joining the EU. Now they are desperate to join for the economic benefits of membership.
it is unrealistic to expect a nation of 300 000 innocent people to pay sky high numbers for something that they didin't even do. People are loosing their homes, jobs and are not being able to buy food for their children. And now they are raising taxes, and the price of everything is going up. People need to be more understanding about what's going on in Iceland and what the president did was just following democracy laws which is allowing the people to make the decisions.

Iceland have permanantly damaged there international trustworthyness with there refusal to pay back the 2 billion they owe the UK and NL. The UK taxpayer had to foot the bill when there bank went tits up. Now its time the Icelandic taxpayer pay there dues. No one will lend Iceland anything till they restore there credit rating
@hermankatnip ...The Icelandic people don't owe the UK and NL shit. This was a private bank, British and Dutch depositors chose voluntarily to invest money in this bank, and did so at their own risk.
Do you really think that the UK will just foreget about this? Sooner or later the debt will have to be repaid. Im sorry your country is in the toilet but your government has no option but to pay back the debt. Its no good crawling to the EU for support. They wont touch you with a barge pole
@hermankatnip You sir... are an idiot who does not hold much information about the fall of the icelandic banks. Icelandic people are having a much harder time then the british and deutch. The Icelandic public should not have to pay for something that they did not even know existed. Very few knew that the gov. had given it`s promise to be accountable for a subsidary of an Icelandic bank in another country. No government should have the power to make such vast promises without the people knowi

But that is, perhaps, a different discussion. What we can see in Iceland is the work of their own political and financial elite.

Iceland is not saying no to keep money.
Iceland is being forced to say no because there is no money.
No thinking person knows what is going on and says Iceland should pay.
