  • I find it interesting how many Australians comment on this accent as being typical of a certain time period - has Australian speech changed that much, and so noticeably, in recent decades?

General American speech really couldn't be analyzed that way...although, certainly, vocabularies change, and slang especially becomes dated.

  • @hebneh Streep sounded Kiwi if anything. Aussies from the cities have a more well spoken accent but people from the bush have the broader sound. Hugh Jackman has the typical Aussie accent , he doesn't put a plum in his mouth like Nicky Kidman does when she's in the U.S

  • Meryl Streep's an amazing actress.

  • Judge for youself, the accent is accurate:

Youtube search: "Lindy Chamberlian - Interview part 2"

  • Meryl Streep is demonstrating a really sloppy Steve Irwin accent, if you like. Some Australians do sound like that, although the majority don't. I wish Americans would just get that right.

  • @cheeseno1 - Lindy Chamberlain was from New Zealand...that's why!

  • @MissAspka Yep...you're right, but she moved over here when she was about 1 year old. She never lived in NZ long enough for the kiwi accent to rub off properly. The only reason you'd find that Meryl Streep's accent sounds more kiwi is because the vowels in a kiwi accent are still hooked a little bit - like an American accent but different. I'll say that she did a good job with it though, and that it wouldn't be easy to get it exactly right if you spoke American english from the start.

  • This is a pretty spot on "older generation" accent. I was really surprised.

  • I'm going to have a baby (hopefully dingo proof) and move all the way to Australia so that she/he can have that accent :D

  • oh man. Her accent is a little NZ but being Australian, it's pretty damn good :)

  • I'm Australian and I can't even pull off an Aussie accent that well myself! Meryl is phenomenal.

  • @picturesqueish

Agreed. Meryl is definitely a phenomenon in the film industry!

  • Meryl Streep Is Amazing In This Scene, Best Actress Ever

  • I most certainley don't sound like this.

  • @Farchbargen Are you Lindy Chamberlain?

  • As an Australian, her accent's not THAT good. It's OK, and the Australian accent is hard to fake, but really... the accent she does isn't as good as everyone says it is.

  • @karenshoney have you actually watched tapes of the real Lindy Chamberlain? It's exactly the same accent! I'm also Australian and Meryl's accent is perfect given the time period, socio- economic status of her character and region of Australia where she is from.

  • the actress.

  • I don't think she does a very good Aussie accent.

  • @xXMadameButterflyXx It depends on where in australia you come from. My accent is closer to an english accent to this type of aussie accent.

  • I watched the movie when I was a child and after that thought there were clear evidence that a dingo had taken her, but after reading about the case I found out there were really no evidence at all. A piece of garment without even animal teeth marks is no evidence of the mother´s innocense. The coroner has not ruled out the possibility of homicide and the case is officially unsolved. The woman is most likely guilty and gets all the sympathies. And the poor child will never get justice.

  • And it was not like there was no evidence when she was charged. It is just that there was no definitive evidence. Fluid was found in their car which is likely although not definitively from the baby´s blood. Also there were marks on the child´s clothing found at the campsite that her throat had been slashed. She probably buried her in a shallow grave somewhere and the animals might have spread her bones later and that´s why she was never found.

  • Lindy Chamberlain was not there when the dingo supposedly snatched her baby. Right away after going to the tent she started yelling that a dingo took it. How the hell could she have known what had taken the baby. An innocent mother in that situation would be concerned that the child is missing and not immediately yell "a dingo took my baby" in a situation when she had not seen what happened. She is not innocent, you people have been fooled.

  • She is incomparable! Viva Streep!

  • She is phenomenal. The accent is actually pitch perfect. People who make comparisons between the Australian accent and the new Zealand accent are wasting their time because they are very similar. I'm Australian, and I recognise this.

Watching this, even this short little clip, I forgot that I was watching Meryl Streep. I was watching Lindy Chamberlain.

  • @gustavmarkovic31 So right

  • @gustavmarkovic31 cunt.

  • Oh my goodness that accent is amazing! I knew she was supposed to be a master at the accent work but its hard to tell until she does your own. The 'incredible' at the beginning is perfect.

  • I didn't even realise it was Streep when I watched this film the first time around. Insanely good job on the accent. You only have to listen to Julia Gillard or Pauline Hanson speak and you can somewhat tie this together.

  • I love it when she says "Aiden...............is still hungry" That makes me laugh the way she says that.

  • Wow. Great Aussie accent.

  • She is amazing! That accent would have been very common in the 70's and early 80s!! There are parts of her accent that are still relevant today! She has done a great job!

  • Remember Linda was a Kiwi folks. Stop judging her as an aussie. If you see the Lindy Chamberlain interview you would see Meryl was brilliant at playing her and more than that accent aside, her acting was perfect. I really like the way she had to play this very stern, unapologetic, charmless woman who was restrained emotionally.

  • She does an aussie accent real good.

    amazing actress she is

  • meryl streep is fabulous. i'm an american, so i really have no room to say "her accent is dead on" but in comparison to a lot of u.s. actors, pretty convincing

  • This Aussie reckons Meryl is a genius!!!

Our accent is very unique and difficult to master, but she does it.

  • as an aussie, i think meryl is pretty good... of coz it doesnt sound like the typical modern city accent you hear nowadays

  • her accent is so dodgy. lol

  • no its not..aussie accent is one of the hardest to pull off and she did a great job.

  • @jewelrox I'm Aussie , the same age as The Murdering Bitch and my son was the same age as Azaria, I watched the murderer on T.V from start to end and Streep did a hideous job at an Aussie accent!

  • @bbschef1 the fact that you have issues is not my problem so try not to share them with me. ok?!

  • @jewelrox Issues.lol..I'm an Aussie, watched the drama unfold,.and have an opinion as to Chamberlain's guilt ,based on the size of her baby as compared to mine who was the same age at the time, and the lack of capacity of a dingo to carry the head in its mouth as SHE claimed. The point is that Streep's portrayal, make up, wig, mostly accent was almost insulting to Australians, almost a parody! I love Streep's work, but this was her worst. It's odd the U.S folk think it sounds good !

  • @jewelrox But for an Aussie to think it a convincing accent is bewildering to me, How old are you, and from which part of Oz do u actually hail? I'm not having a go, I am truly interested.

  • i dont think she sounds New Zealander

  • i watching this movie at school...its sad. I feel sorry for her having all that put on her.

  • Is the bloke she's taking to Lewis FitzGerald?

  • I THINK SHES DONE

    AN ICREDIBLE JOB!

  • Im JUst wondering

do us aussies sound like that?

    :p

    Great work Meryl

  • No, we don't sound like that -God forbid. She did OK, but to me, she's still Meryl Streep, acting. I couldn't believe that she was Lindy- over-exposure to the latter, I guess. I do wish a local girl could have been given the role. Miranda Otto did it very well.

  • She sounds like a New Zealander. But her acting is good. Americans trying to sound Australian always sound like New Zealanders. Like in Lost. *shudders*

  • Well, Lindy IS a Kiwi, so no problems there.

  • Really? Interesting. They should get more Americans to play Kiwis.

  • Haii Prob Meryl is the only 1 can do it xD

Cause she is soo Talented n i dnt think

    she really sounds Kiwi!

  • Poor Azaria, RIP, little sweetheart.

  • She's amazing, and can still do that accent today! wow

  • really good job on the accent though sometimes its overdone - love meryl

  • Awesome accent! I'm an Aussie also.

  • Actually I'm very surprised! Meryl Streeps Aussie accent in this clip is very good. It's when she says "The dingo's got my baby" that sounds wrong (too cockney).

  • But It's the 'Broad Accent', only a minority speak this way...like Steve Irwin.

  • Minority?? The vast majority mate, where do you live?

  • Most Aussies don't speak like Steve Irwin pal, Steve spoke with the 'Broad Accent' which was popular in the 50's but now it's in minority. Most Aussies speak the 'General Accent'. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman are good well known examples, where do you live?

  • Lindy and Steves accents are still the main predominant accents, maybe in the more upper middle class urban areas of Sydney and Melbourne do people speak like Nicole, Hugh and Cate, but they are certainly not indicative of most Australians! Open your eyes and ears mate LOL

  • Well I live near Brisbane, and most people sound NOTHING like Steven Irwin! It's a joke to suggest that "the main predominant accents" are like Irwin's! Maybe in country or rural areas that's true, but since MOST Australian live in or near cities, MOST Australians don't talk like that.

  • Really? Most people in fact 'All' people I've ever met from Brisbane sound as rough as guts!! Sure most people don't say 'struth' and things like that anymore, but that harsh nasal 'Aussie sounding' accent is still the norm, even in the cities and especially in Queensland!!

  • Well then all I can say is that the type of people who you gravitate towards must be the "rough-as-guts" sort. No offence intended, but maybe it's because you're of that kind also? I very occasionally encounter such people, but even so, they sound NOTHING like Steve Irwin.

  • You "very occassionally encounter such people"?? What? Have you turned into Hyacinth Bucket now? LOL

  • No, but perhaps you've turned into Sir Les Paterson or Mr Yobbo of the Century. I kind of think your name supports this -- "Big Deano" immediately conjures up images of the yobbo culture in my mind. Just because you may encounter yobbo-like individuals in your everyday life, isn't to say that most Australians do. In no way am I anything like Hyacinth Bucket -- in fact I have a casual job in a working-class environment and I'm a student. And NO ONE there talks like bloody Steven Irwin!!!

  • vardamir, Steve Irwin bunged it on, big time. He did it so often that I think he forgot that he came from a Melbourne suburb :)

  • Actually, I seriously doubt Irwin ever "bunged it on". The people who knew him ever since he was young will tell you that that's how he ALWAYS spoke. People like you are so quick to judge someone just because they don't conform to how they "ought" to be.

  • I bet he only behaved like a super ocker when the cameras were rolling. he was a suburban boy, not a bushy.:)

  • Wrong! Talk to ANYONE who knew him for a considerable length of time, and they'll tell you that "What you saw on TV is what you got in person". I have heard this over and over again from so many different sources that it's hard to discount. Unless of course you have some bias against him, as you certainly seem to.

  • Steve Irwin was from Melbourne? Well, I'm from Melbourne and I know plenty of people with extreme ocker accents.

  • I'm also from Melbourne, and I don't know anyone who screeches "Croikey!" every 3 seconds.

  • lmao! (but feels really bad coz he died)

  • yay Lindy! You rock!

    Go Sevvies!

  • She doesn't sound at all like Lindy- Lindy has an unfortunate "whine",and she doesn't speak this quickly.

  • Acting should have to be about a precise impersonation than it becomes empty. And I bet if Streep had made her voice whinier you can bet people would have given her hell and made fun of her accent even more than they already do sometimes.

  • Meryl IS the BEST actress of our time. That accent is amazing. She does sound like a blend of Aussie and New Zealand

  • She's a genius. Enough said.

  • omg meryl is there anything you can't do?

    lol.

  • dead on

  • Meryl Streep is brilliant.

  • Wow, she got the bogan accent just right. (not paying out Aussies, I live in Brisbane).

  • Have to go buy this movie!!! Like everyone else has said, AUSTRALIAN???? Stunning, as usual.

  • It's kind of an Australian accent. Lindy Chamberlain was born in New Zealand and lived in Australia. She had kind of a mix . . . but she sounded just like that. It's amazing.

  • Wow. That just makes Meryl even more amazing. Sorry for not having the right information. =/

  • oh my gosh her accent! meryl with an australian accent?! this is amazing!

  • OMG wowness accent! She is so amazing!

  • Fab!
