I actually liked this change to the ending, but I thought the follow through after this scene was weak. It needed a heavy impact than the tone the remainder of the film had. Not saying this out of comic purity issues, but just as a film itself.

Shortly before the explosion (or maybe a few pages before rather than panels, but either way in the last chapter of the book), they have a conversation about how the young man is always at his stand reading comics, but that they have never really talked. They then find out they have the same first name and begin to bond.

@ScottishWookiee I am not one of those snobs that puts their nose up to this movie just because it isn't an exact carbon copy of the book, because it was damn near closer than how it would have been had Zach Snyder not taken the director job for it (he saved the film from being set during the gulf war, among other dubious choices.) Still, it would have been nice if they could have shoehorned that in.

Holy shit, a moment in the movie where something actually happens? I wouldn't know because I left 2 hours in when the film failed to captivate me. So I missed NY getting blown up. Oh woe is me. This movie was so bad it made me angry.

In the graphic novel it's supposed to be a creature that gets teleported to NY, but the teleportation process causes a big explosion. Crazy way to end the Cold War, but if you read the novel, it's genius.
