omg so your telling me you can use a file to sharpen an axe head - holy cow call the presses have them make this front page news! man people are helpless
Not trying to be mean, but it would had been very important had this been an ACTUALL video, not pictures...not sure why he'd waste the time this way.Now I need to find another video instead.
Ray Mears does a much better job demonstrating axe and knife sharpening. This slideshow is a waste of time and wholly inadequate. Look up Ray Mears axe sharpening.
Thanks for doing your part to pass down this knowledge. Sadly with more people being raised in urban areas, the skills of how to use and care for certain tools is being lost to history. I'm a firm believer in self-sufficiency. In order to keep the practice of self-sufficiency alive, these skills need to be passed down to the next generation and in many cases relearned or rediscovered.
@recurveninja An axe is used for cutting or chopping wood. There are different types of axes for different types of tasks. Felling, limbing, splitting etc are examples of types of axes. Many people live in rural or semi-rural areas and have homes heated by wood burning stoves or fireplaces. My in-laws still do. Many of these people chop or split their own firewood. To these people a splitting axe or utility axe is an essential tool that gets used frequently.
A very useful video on sharpening technique. I find it very difficult to find a file that you recommend (I live in Poland). I will follow your advice as I know my axe is not nearly as sharp as the one you use!
good video, but an actual video would have been a lot better, so that we could see everything, not just still photos presented with the ken burns effect.
ok question I have watched a few of these ax sharpening videos on yuo tube . but no one ever tells anyone to finish off the sharpening with a Strop (leather strap or a buffing wheel if they are in a shop. and to use a good cromium buffing compond wehn they do it. it shoud be done with any sharp tool. has no one heard of this?
Where online, do you know of good quality axes forsale, only place I have come across, is traditionalwoodworkingtools, but they seem to be a bit expensive. The axes in lowes, and from Northern Tool, are suppose to be not so good, plus I may need a good broad axe,and adze axe, any suggestions ?, thanks for the info
@ShannCole888 if you want a high value axe from the hardware store get a garant axe. they are high quality and unlike other hardware store junk they coome pretty sharp. but if you can find a really old one at a garage sale thats probably youre best bet.
why would you record audio of you sharpening an axe for a slide show? why didnt you just makea video?

How about actually showing how it's done instead of still photos? Didn't help me one bit.

Thank you. I appreciate the advice about gloves, the leather sheath, and how to carry the axe.
