@SeanAxela The wire doesn't need to get warm; it's the spark that causes ignition. Have you tried sanding the ends of the wires? Many are coated with an insulator in order to prevent shorts. Also, if the wire IS getting warm that means you are shorting it, which will waste the batteries, and if you let it run long enough maybe blow up the batteries.
I have a question, you said a thin enough wire? Isnt that we want as much power to be deliveried to the ignition material using thicker wire? Btw, you can even use a smalller battery as long as it can output enough energy or discharge to the load( match) in your case. Shorter and thicker wire is better for imporving the frequency response by lowering transmission parallel capacitance and series resistance.
People using car battery for much larger energy discharge, and the load isnt a match.
@SniperPIKACHU No. the point is to conduct a fairly large amount of electricity through a wire that can't handle it, which is the purpose of the small wire, so it will catch fire and ignite the rocket.
@SniperPIKACHU yes, but the match head is what actually creates the flame. so the spark/heat from the wire ignites the match so the rocket engine is sure to ignite.
@SniperPIKACHU imporving the frequency response... lol what a putz. What are you sugesting... getting radio transmisions from his ignitor? Yeah... like imporving the frequency response by lowering transmission parallel capacitance and series resistance will light his match any better. His little battery won't lite his match using larger wire. You must like to impress yourself using big words.
@randy12368 Please check all the way back to the comments I've left... let's see... 6 months ago? I wanst talking about this ignitor. I was talking about how other people do ignitor in general for larger rockets. Wires is important because some people ignite the target material with pulses with a frequency. (different freqency means different time delay... to pulse power to the driving circuit)In this case, cable-cap may fuck things up. Btw, frequency response is nothing big.
just use a 9v HURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
@VicToRMrOwKa I know this is an old question, but I'll respond anyway. The reason it doesn't work with the longer wire is because the longer the wire length, the more energy is lost. This is because the wire is not 100% efficient at conducting electricity. There is always some energy loss.
oh yeah and i ment ti tell you what to use for the hot wire get some steel wool the course number 3 don't use fine it wont work, use this for the hot fuse wire soilder it to the two strans soild core 24 gage intercom wire, then dip in in the liquid pyrodex paste, let dry a little over a hour about two hours, i gust tested three last night thay all fired great, so i made ten more, i was up very late so please forgive my bad spelling today, read below how to make the pyro paste
i have found that if you put a little bit of water on pyrodex pellets the powder that's use in mussle louders, not black powder pyrodex pellets there 50 grain, anyways put a small amount of water on it it will desolve, a little crunking is required on the chunks make a thick paste out of it then dip your fuse in that let dry tell very hard, this will work better then matces or black powder, it has a sticking compound in it makes it stick and get hard, i used a letter bit of rubbing alchol too!
And.. actually, I failed ignite two sucrose rocket booster with 6V Lantern batteries..
I required two booster starts simultaneously, but it require more current to ignite.
p.s. I recommend to use thin Ni-Cr wire or steel wool as ignition coil. When I tried with thin copper wire, it fails very often because of coating on copper wire. Removing coating from copper wire is extremely hard for me.
@tanoloke You can salvage some really thin copper wire from scrap stranded hookup wire you have lying about. Just pull a strand from the bundle that is long enough for the application and cut it.
@edster210 you yould connect it to the fuse of the rocket OR you just put some BP on the wire (that you can find in ANY ordinary electric cable just open them and you will find a bunch of them)
i'm going to be making a rocket laucher soon and i''m looking for an ignition system to use and it looks liek yours is going to be it.
i'm probably going to make one of these little units for each missile and and hot glue it in with the ends of the copper wire attached to slightly larger pieces of metal on either side of the base
the alligator clamp the power source to those pieces to attach them to the button switch "trigger"
Great vid! a piece of visco works in place of the match head and its a bit easier to secure in place.
The 4.5v works for short distances but if you 20 meters away there will be too much resistance in the wire and you will need a bigger battery! just my 2 cents :]
best ignition on youtube!!!!! dude this is an awesome idea and im going to use it in my firework ignitions! i had some shitty braised wire that was too small to work in any of my circuits cuz anything over 4 volts would burn the insulation so i stripped them and inside the wire was super super thin. thinner then hair. im usin that. i havent tried matches yet but im sure i will. ill maybe around holidays post a video of me and my electric ignited fireworks!
hey how did you connect the wires because it took me like 30 min and the wire broke after it worked so it was a waist of time is there a fatser way to connect them
thin... lol. most small gauge braided wire will be small enough that if you strip the wire and take the small strands out u will get like 15-20 ignition strands. hope this helps
Copper will NOT work with an electric ignition braided steel is the best choice or just regulat steel wire like 50cents a foot at lows or home depot hopefully this helps!
thanks, im making a halo rocket launcher, and i waas trying to invent my own igniter, but know ill use yourse, and i may put you in credits if i make vid.

I Have the same problem!!!
and i found the solution!
these 9v batterys have a really low number of amperes...
use 3x1.5 or a celphone/camara battary end it wil work!

@VicToRMrOwKa
this might not work if youre using long lengths of wire between you and the rocket due to lack of current.
get more batteries in parallel, or just use bigger battery
