Joe Locke is honored to have played with the greatest vibes-marimba player ever. Hutch comes from Bags' groove and ventured into the avante-garde jazz in the 60's with Dolphy, etc. He is the Herbie Hancock of that instrument. I've seen this master play his ass off many times in NYC and the SF Bay Area. What a sound!
Yes, "the Herbie Hancock of the vibes" (ignaciomoran) -- that's the perfect characterization of BH's "place" in the canon, and I can't think of much higher praise.
Though Bobby and Joe's styles do differ they certainly compliment each other. And it is also clear they respect each other musicianship. Bobby's fluid resonance versus Joe's staccato rhythms offset each other nicely.
Totally amazing. It shows the contrast of the two styles. Locke is a flurry of notes, genius, and mastery beyond comprehension. Yet with just a few notes, Bobby Hutcherson is able to MELT the stage. His each note is like a fluid, emotional ballad of incredible depth. In my opinion, Hutcherson is able to touch the soul while Locke appeals more to the brain.
I'd agree on your analyse... up to the word "brain". When listening to Joe Locke, it is not really the part of me that is most touched/appealed. And I think for this particular vid, less than the technical approach I'd give more importance to the human one, the emotion generated by both vibists. Eg. watch that vid with Red Norvo & Gary Burton playing on the same vibes... Another great moment in vibes' history. I'm not sure you'd feel that emotion... (my 2 cents!)
vibes looks simple to play is not easy to master it!

Great stuff! Beautiful notes by both...BH's simplicity and quiet tone (my favourite) and JL vibrancy. Thanks for the posting!
