No "we" did not have a GPS system, the US had it and could degrade or negate the signal any time they wanted (not that they probably would, the US and Europe are allies) China and Russia also have their own GPS type systems up and running or being built.
But GPS systems are too vital and strategically important not to control your own.
The UK has it's own nuclear deterrent, GPS sytems are no less valuable nowadays.

This is fantastic news.
It's good for the public (think of the uses, think about the jobs that this project has created), and also good for the EU as an independent global player.

mmh yes but if im right that GPS is from the US, but this will make us have our own GPS system.
