TobyJackson....There ARE muscles in the fingers. The Lumbrical Muscles as well as the Dorsal Interossei...are two muscles...each from two different finger moving muscle systems. So maybe YOU failed Anatomy and Physiology class...as I firstly expected.

What does it have to do with this guy's technique anyway? Lumbricals don't go past the 1st knuckle, they're hand muscles. Palmar Interossei are hand muscles also. Dorsal Interossei are the same way. These are all muscles of the hands. The tendon that closes the fingers would be the Flexor Digitorum Profundus guided by huge muscles in the forearm. If you have muscles in your fingers, then you're a freak, and you're welcome to name them whatever latin, greek words you want.

I've been playing drums for over 30 years and my single stroke drumroll is excellent, thank you. You're boring me as I said...look on the internet if you know how...and just look at some medical diagrams and you'll come around...it only takes opening your eyes....you'll see the light...eventually.

wrists. wrists are where it all happens. Start slow with your wrists like you did with your forearms here, then fade into using your fingers. There are'nt muscles there, but if you train this way, your fingers can learn to vibrate the stick the way Mexicans roll thier R's, times two, because you have both hands
Tendons are not the only cause for finger movement...muscles control subtle movements also. Tendons mostly PULL back and help OPEN the fingers...when playing drums...fingers are mostly CLOSING to help with stick control.
The only muscles that move fingers are the ones that move the tendons which move the fingers and wrist in all different directions. Without tendons, how do you think you could even pick a drumstick up?!

ok. it goes like this... you are tense! dont be! there are many ways to do single stroke. personally, i use all of them depending on the sound i want. you will never play 32nd notes at 120 bpm beeing that tense.. just get some classes. you will be amazed about how complex (and how simple) a single stroke is..
the muscles in our fingers are smaller therefore able to move faster. relax everything except for your fingers. the drumhead tension, weight of the stick, gravity and nature will allow you humming-bird-like quckness in your fingers.

The best speed and control in single stroke rolls comes from your fingers, check out the wfd, those guys don't move their arms at all.
