I just watched this movie and I really enjoyed it. Supposedly it's based on Dostoyevsky's short story White Nights but I kinda thought it was more of a modern version of The Age of innocence. Gwyneth is the Countess Olenska character(which was played by Michelle Pfeiffer), Joaquin is the Newland Archer character(Daniel Day Lewis), and Vinessa Shaw is the May Welland character(played by Gwyneth's secret BFF Winona Ryder). Great movie altogether, bravo performances.

I really like this, but its upsetting to see Paltrow play a woman who hurts someone by making a bad decision. Just like in Great Expectations, if a girl I was in love with left me and ran off with someone else I would not look back. Thats why I did not believe the ending of Great Expectations, I would forgive but not forget. Which is why I am glad Vinessa Shaw is so great in this, Joanquin Belongs with her in this movie.

Hard to explain but any scene with his family just got me, where they're trying to show him they're proud of him by boasting at the dinner table scene despite his obviously being ashamed of his situation, having to reassure his parents constantly, his social awkwardness and his thinking he's improving then crashing. Being heavily leaned upon. Being a hopeless pushover is genderless I guess hehe, ah well. Hope that helped :}

I should mention that the depression is clinical but I agree, I've always been against sympathy because it just makes us feel more different, like victims. MDD doesn't get sympathy anyway because it's perceived an easily fixable problem despite the death rate. Exercise definitely helps with chemical imbalance in the brain caused by major depressive disorder, (not the cause of unfortunately). Helps keep you motivated, so helps in general! <3 Mos Def :}

Great Movie. I can't stop thinking about Joaqins cry at the end of the movie when the girl sais she won't run off with him. I really thought he was going to kill himself but then he does something totally shocking!! The brunette is a total desperate loser in this film. It's so obvious he's not into her! @freedomland11 Well, his depression, (plays small violin). Hard to explain but any scene with his family just got me, where they're trying to show him they're proud of him by boasting at the dinner table scene despite his obviously being ashamed of his situation, having to reassure his parents constantly, his social awkwardness and his thinking he's improving then crashing. Being heavily leaned upon. Being a hopeless pushover is genderless I guess hehe, ah well. Hope that helped :}

I have one leg and let me tell ya, I don't let ppl feel sorry for me(only until I feel sorry for myself) and that will never happen =))... There is this lovely movie "My Left Foot" you should watch it..

I should mention that the depression is clinical but I agree, I've always been against sympathy because it just makes us feel more different, like victims. MDD doesn't get sympathy anyway because it's perceived an easily fixable problem despite the death rate. Exercise definitely helps with chemical imbalance in the brain caused by major depressive disorder, (not the cause of unfortunately). Helps keep you motivated, so helps in general! <3 Mos Def :}

Great Movie. I can't stop thinking about Joaqins cry at the end of the movie when the girl sais she won't run off with him. I really thought he was going to kill himself but then he does something totally shocking!! The brunette is a total desperate loser in this film. It's so obvious he's not into her! It's pathetic how some women are. So desperate to be with a man, even one who doens't love you.

But I have to disagree with you, the Brunette is a loser because it's obvious he's not in love with her either but she just continues to be with Joaqin. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO upset with the ending man!!!!!!!!!! Joaquin Phoenix's character Leonard SETTLED for Vinessa Shaw's character Sandra. Although Sandra was sooooo nice, beautiful and stable, Leonard was IN LOVE with Michelle... and to make it all worse, he gave Sandra the ring he was going to propose Michelle WITH!!!!! WRONG!!!!!!! i'm sad... poor guy wanted to get away far with michelle, but now he HAS to live a life he wanted to ESCAPE.. dont get me wrong, I love Sandra..
