Do you experience any sort of lag when switching between patches? And can you have the delay spill over to the next patch or does the delay have to cut off, right when you change from say a clean to to destorted.
@SteeleInd A matter a fact it does! H&K Coreblade! Download presets and load them onto the amp with flash drive. Also make my own presets and store them on flash drive.
Does anyboby know of a another good processor thats a liitle cheaper than the axe fx...that sounds some what like it??the axe is way out of my price range.
Do you have to have a power amp for this thing to work? I just want to use it for studio and I don't have a PA, can I plug it straight into my cab and will it be reasonably loud?
@shadows08: Minus the tubes... I'm really drawn on this. I'm working on building a studio. I want some seriously good clean death metal tone, but not sure if this is necessary. I love the effects though...
@bkrumme That's not true. My triple rec was $2 200, and I'm pretty sure axe fx are around 2500? But it's still worth it since there are so many amp models and effects on the axe fx. I really wish I knew about these before I bought the mesa.
@Tb0neZ5 Direct from Fractal prices here: Axe-Fx Standard - $1500, Axe-Fx Ultra - $2000, Axe-Fx II - $2600 buying one right now, $2200 if you get on the waiting list.
BTW, I love my Ultra. Sold a Mark V and bunch of rack gear to get it.
@bkrumme I would sell my triple rec to get one of these any day, but I probably wouldn't get 2 grand for it, and I would need to buy a power amp. Don't have the money for that at the moment.
What's the most cost effective way to play with the axe-fx live?
I know you're not supposed to use a regular guitar amp as it will "color" the tone too much. Is the best way to get a power-amp and hook up straight to the PA?
I'll stick with my Digitech GSP-2101 when it comes to all-in-one unit. Cause the axe-fx sounds just as digital as the digitech. I'd rather buy a real Fender Bassman ( which I did), and buy a really good tube amp from Suhr. (which I also did). Pedals into the front, and analog preamps into the effectsloop return... via looping system. No digital stuff. Much much cleaner better and much more real.
@thelogheart I listen to alot of stuff, especially instrumental guitar music. (Satriani, vai, Andy timmons), but also melodic rock, melodic blues. Even some modern country (Rascall Flatts, Keith Urban, I like the guitar tone on their music). I like effects (rack effects), and pedal effects
@AlembicPools jeebus...give me your address so i can come steal the beautiful piece of equipment. i grabbed myself a bugera 1960 tube amp running through a marshall cab and it sounds WAY better than my friends' marshall mg102fx. i recently discovered how much better it sounds when you crank it up to around 7 or 8 and let those tubes really do their job. but it gets dangerously loud haha. bugera gets a lot of flak but i really can't complain--half the price of the mars. stack i almost got.
@AlembicPools ...but with that being said i guess it depends on the type of live setting you're at--for me its generally metal shows with a loud crowd and usually the acoustics in the venue aren't the greatest.
@AlembicPools yeah, i like a the sonic quality of a lot of john frusciante's stuff because he tends to use older analog equipment for the recording process. i think the axe-fx is most useful in a live setting...it limits the amount of gear you have to lug around, and a good portion of the people there won't be able to tell the difference in the sound. and this unit is also a lot cheaper than buying all the individual stomp boxes and tube amps. but yeah recording is best with analog equipment.
@AlembicPools alright, when you put it that way i agree. but you can't deny the usefulness of the unit. its very portable and would be great for the song writing process. you can always use analog stuff when you go to record.
@AlembicPools its far too versatile of a unit to be degraded as you have done. you can get amazing tones on it and they're constantly updating patches. pair this with a solid poweramp and you're going to have an amazing system--like come on, dude, its not like line 6 made this; otherwise, id agree.
@AlembicPools ...Dweezil Zappa???..huh huh..i know what you're sayin but the Axes are pretty 'efffin great regardless, and i expect the new one to get so close as to be practically as good...keep in mind using the axe as a preamp running into a tube poweramp will ALWAYS be superior to running them direct into recorder, at least for hi gain and bluesy type sounds...so in that sense it is as 'real' as any other preamp section of any actual amp
lol all the axe fx standards and axe fx ultra losers are gonna cry since the new Axe FX II is coming out and they stop making the standard and ultra lol
@AlembicPools I've turned up for gigs with a guitar case and a Pod for 9 years. The fact is, I can tell the difference but the punters can't. They don't even ask where my amp is! The difference to me is that I can get the bus or tube to the venue.
@AlembicPools I always used to say that as well, until one day I upgraded my BOSS GT-8 to the new GT-10 and was blown away by the new preamp models. I was able to finally take my valve preamp out of my setup and model what I needed on the GT-10. I still put it all through a Boogie Power amp & Palmer Speaker Simulators as the power amp modelling isn't there yet but when I find a unit that does that well enough, that heavy Boogie is gone. A real musician with a hernia is no use to anyone :))
OK so does anyone know how usable it is in a live rig. Specifically, is there any delay when changing presets/patches? I ask because just months before the Axe FX Ultra came out, I bought an Eventide Eclipse, which I love, but is completely unusable in a live rig because of the load time of 1-2 seconds between patches. Ultimately, I'm thinking about selling my Eclipse and putting that money towards an Axe-FX Ultra. Any helpful thoughts/ words of advice?
@entr0py1 many bands these days use it live (periphery, animals as leaders, chris broderick from megadeth...), so I think it should be a pretty solid unit
@entr0py1 yes it is actually very useable straight to PA. (trivium is using the axe fx live, Animals as Leaders uses just theirs straight to P.A. John Petruccii just uses it for effects live, Dwzil Zappa uses one live, Periphery uses them straight to P.A. , the list goes on.)
Sorry if this is a stupid question: does axe-fx ultra work if i simply plug it into my ENGL Gig Master 15 head's FX Loop or does it still require a power amp to work? I'm really noob with these things so that's why i'm asking. A great video btw!
The more I watch axe fx videos the more I want one but its hard to know if this is a hype and some other company release a much cheaper replica in a few years
Worst review, ever. You spent the whole first half of the video dicking around making stupid sounds instead of demoing what everyone wants to hear. Stopped watching after I realized you were going to act like an 8 year old and talk like a fag for the entire video.
wow the commercial at the beggining gots to be european. I could care less about msot the effects on this bad daddy, but the distortion tone is killer. Now I know there are many factors on the outcome of your sound...... Bulb from periphery uses axe fx, a very defined sound............., Id buy it, tho if i didint like metal... I would deffinantly not. People can say there are other pedals for distortion, but not like axe fx.. I could mimic it. Every guitar sounds the same through axe fx distort
@Hielkenator for the demo, not really the sound, so you don't just have to read about it. If you really want to know how it sounds, check out some of the material from the artists using it from their site ;)
@Hielkenator Well I live in Australia, so some of the amp models it can replicate to 80 or 90% are worth $4000, and adding the effects and axe-edit program, along with handy direct in recording, for me, the huge $2500 price tag is still well worth it, I have a POD, but alot of guys from bands I've talked to need almost no EQ on their guitar tracks when using the axe, it's just so well sitting, and it sounds like it too.
Anyone that buys or denies an amp, guitar, speaker cab, fx processor, etc., based on what they hear on their laptop speakers or Mackie HR824's for that matter, needs to pull firmly on the base of their skulls until they hear it pop straight out of their arse. Signal chain and recording technique matter immensely. Youtube demo's are hardly sonically accurate.
IMHO, the Axe FX is a great unit. Well worth the money - especially if you end up selling $1000 worth of gear!
@DownhillingGuitarist LOL, those are the exact speaks I am using, Mackie HR824's, they're my Dad's studio speakers. But I have to agree with you completely. Especially after watching this video, my answer has solidified, I must sell all my current equipment, and buy an Axe-FX Ultra!
idk maybe i'm biased, or maybe its because i know its solid state, but it just sounds like a solid state amp to me. don't get me wrong, Tosin Abasi makes this thing sounds amazing, so maybe its just the presets, but it doesn't seem to me that this thing can 100% replace a tube amp. Thoughts?
All I can say is that I LOVE my Axe-FX ULTRA and it's the one piece of gear (along with my Friedman Marsha Amp) that I will take to the grave with me!
It has MANY effects but each one sound more rinky dinky than the last one. ı was thinking of purchasing this unit. Even sent info to the company. They never answered me. Boy am I glad I didnt buy one of these units. Sounds very armature.. software based preamps sound like software based preamps..
I'll pass....
But I do want to say that this Demo is done very well and the presenter should get HEAD from fractal for his efforts.
I am no longer posting because I dont want to sound like a kill joy, or rain on the parade. As to your comment , its what one listens for, I dont want to sound negative so I'll just say that I am not deaf and this unit dosnt sound bad but it dosnt cut it for me. I think maybe sticking a quality tube preamp somewhere along that chain could change everything maybe something fractal should look into. Best of both worlds etc. as it stands now not bad but "no cigar". this is my last post.
What I want to know is.. Is the Ultra worth the extra $500? The only think I would use is intelligent pitch shifting / harmonizing.. and MAYBE the synth stuff. Does the "vanilla" axe FX have a "whammy pedal" effect?
This is the best review that I've seen out there!! Great work. Hopefully I can end my GAS soon. Every time I start up my current amp: Fender Cyber Twin SE, (which is the same idea, just not done nearly as well), I think about axe fx and become sad. :(
I love his "Hi"

@prydogga Yes, I know. I own a AX-FX. In this video it just sucks.
Offtopic: The only bad thing I can think of is the pricetag.
You could buy a nice secondhand car for the money it cost me.
Compared to other brands it was'nt worth it probably.
I can do the things I WANT with My zoomg9.2tt and POD + amp.
But it sounds SWEET. Just not on this vid.
Hielkenator 1 year ago
@Hielkenator Well I live in Australia, so some of the amp models it can replicate to 80 or 90% are worth $4000, and adding the effects and axe-edit program, along with handy direct in recording, for me, the huge $2500 price tag is still well worth it, I have a POD, but alot of guys from bands I've talked to need almost no EQ on their guitar tracks when using the axe, it's just so well sitting, and it sounds like it too.

so what if i want to use the amp models but want to use my own drive pedals, is that possible?
chasingtheyeti13 1 year ago
@chasingtheyeti13 you find better drives than any pedals in axe fx

Okay...Eleven Rack or Axe Fx Ultra?

Anyone that buys or denies an amp, guitar, speaker cab, fx processor, etc., based on what they hear on their laptop speakers or Mackie HR824's for that matter, needs to pull firmly on the base of their skulls until they hear it pop straight out of their arse. Signal chain and recording technique matter immensely. Youtube demo's are hardly sonically accurate.
IMHO, the Axe FX is a great unit. Well worth the money - especially if you end up selling $1000 worth of gear!

@DownhillingGuitarist ok get your point, but what's wrong with the Mackie's? cheap laptop speakers sure, but monitors too??
HiredGoonage 1 year ago
@DownhillingGuitarist LOL, those are the exact speaks I am using, Mackie HR824's, they're my Dad's studio speakers. But I have to agree with you completely. Especially after watching this video, my answer has solidified, I must sell all my current equipment, and buy an Axe-FX Ultra!

@vicwiley I second that. How about a tutorial on how to take care of your hair?

idk maybe i'm biased, or maybe its because i know its solid state, but it just sounds like a solid state amp to me. don't get me wrong, Tosin Abasi makes this thing sounds amazing, so maybe its just the presets, but it doesn't seem to me that this thing can 100% replace a tube amp. Thoughts?

All I can say is that I LOVE my Axe-FX ULTRA and it's the one piece of gear (along with my Friedman Marsha Amp) that I will take to the grave with me!

Awesome review of product man! and by a fellow Brit.
I've got one problem though, I've got to convince my wife I need it.
As you you said I've got serious G.A.S but I'd empty my rack to get this!.

@tehsimo

@awesomejohnnet to be fair the clips in this video are some of the worst I've heard. But i was talking about the axe generally.

So you can just plug the axe fx directly into a cabinet and you're good? Or do you need a head as well?

what's the dnb song in the background? remind's me a lot of a pendulum & bulletproof song called Mind's Eye. sick tune imo

What I want to know is.. Is the Ultra worth the extra $500? The only think I would use is intelligent pitch shifting / harmonizing.. and MAYBE the synth stuff. Does the "vanilla" axe FX have a "whammy pedal" effect?
brandon9271 1 year ago
Is it easy to run just the effects, and use no cabinet simulation, no eqs or anything. Just the effects?

What amplifier do you use for live performance? A keyboard amp? thanks
madgrass16 1 year ago
This is the best review that I've seen out there!! Great work. Hopefully I can end my GAS soon. Every time I start up my current amp: Fender Cyber Twin SE, (which is the same idea, just not done nearly as well), I think about axe fx and become sad. :(
