Well, I remember this, done shortly before Burrough's death, and Morrison was definitely a fan. Burroughs also did a series of appearances, etc. with Laurie Anderson, and wish they were on youtube.
Yeh, I'm in. After seeing "Howl," I'm revisiting Burroughs on You Tube, continuing to feed my jones for him and the Beats and always find ing more footage. This video was perfect to throw into the mix I was chipping on. Never been a Doors fan, but Burroughs' voice here is perfect. Reminds me of his awesome reading of "The Junky's Christmas." And, hey, just noticed it was made into a film.
Lots of nasty comments. I like cover albums like "Stoned immaculate" because I became sick of the original Doors recordings from FM radio overplay. These sorts of projects are refreshing and interesting, and breath new life into old tired favorites.
Poetry like all art is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
bill's later "sell-out" stuff - from the narcissistic treacle of sonic youth to the calcified totems of gus van sant- was foisted on him by nervous-giggle hipster-media brats disguising themselves desperately. the fact that he went along with it all is a testament to his true, gentle gentleman demeanor.
Eh. When he got old, Burroughs may have gone along with some ideas for projects that he really ought to have declined. He did seem to enjoy the status he held among younger people. Possibly he needed money, I don't know. That's OK, though. We forgive him. Who would hold it against him if he liked being seen as a kind of elderly rock star? Doesn't mean he liked the Doors or Jim Morrison though, although perhaps he did.
This is really stupid. Morrison was such a pedestrian poet. Burroughs did this because he was a very open guy, not out of any love or respect necessarily for Morrison as an artist. Burroughs did a lot of corny things like this in his later years. Just look at that cheesy thing he did with Bono! And that Nike commercial! Luckily Burrough's literary reputation is great enough that when he sank this low, it's still really hard to call him a sellout (even when he sorta was sometimes.)
@bugmusk6 So you think me, one who studies and devours the work of Rimbaud, Mallarme, Baudelaire, Lautreamont, Jarry, Apollonaire like some sort of religious mad man, someone who "knows nothing of real poetry", eh? Just because I don't care for this, that I disagree with you, doesn't mean I'm a "fucking moron". Rock singers are seldom very good poets when their words are removed from their songs. There are a few exceptions: Dylan, maybe...Leonard Cohen, Edward Ka-Spel...a few others.
@sydferret asshole or not!! Burroughs one of the greatest writer of the XX century covered him!!!!and he did not for Syd ahahahah Barrett!!!ma vaffanculo coglione!!
Burroughs's major contribution is in literary and artistic collage - he doesn't care who does the material. When he respects the orginal it tends to get less cut up. Like his stuff with Tom Waits on the Black Rider. V cool.
I don't think Uncle Bill would have minded his voice being remixed like this any more than he minded reading Jim Morrison's lyrics instead of his own.
Kerou's pop art/ cartoons are the only thing approaching intellectual sasafras these strange and snakEy days. Burroughs , HS Thompson, Dylan were chasing the same divine groove in different ways.
Hell I did. What I did mean is that everybody over 15 was laughing at Morrison's poetry by the early seventies. Around that time lot of bands asked Burroughs to collaborate on something, but I don't think he ever really took them seriously.
For me this means that Burroughs accepted Morrison as a real poet. Morrison always wanted to be accepted as a poet. This would have made him proud. After all, he was into the Beat Generation.
@jbrenard If you are saying Jim Morrison lacks Intelligence, then all I have to say is your ignorance astounds me. WSB along with the other three beats that pioneered the Beatnik generation are no doubt genius and to be respected. Jim wasn't just a "rocker" before he even started writing songs he was writing poetry, and his poetry is very good I'd say. He loved poetry and if you would read a book on him you could learn he wasn't just some "decerebrated rocker"
As a matter of fact, I happend to have read a few books on the Doors, which is a band I like a lot. But *please* do not tell me that Morrison wrote good poetry, especially if you're into the likes of the Beat generation, or I will start and wonder if you actually read poetry.
@jbrenard, yeah man, as a matter of fact Morrison just wrote great (fantastic) songs and was an fascinating performer and singer.. And can you writ poetry like his? But you're the 'real' expert here..
@jbrenard um I looks as though you are the one that hasn't read any of the Beat generation poets or any of Jim's stuff. Or maybe just too stupid to get it. I find that most people that don't think Jim was a great poet either have room temperature I.Q's or havn't taken the time to really read his stuff.
I am interested in anything about revolt, disorder, chaos-especially activity that seems to have no meaning. It seems to me to be the road toward freedom... Rather than starting inside, I start outside and reach the mental through the physical.

Morrison and Burroughs were both "influenced"....this is obvious. This is what makes
their lyrics beautiful. Few of us have the nerve to reach that peak. I do agree, however, that it can be a cop out.
But............rock on............
