This is awesome! I grew up listening to my dad's records of stuff like this. Now I'm nearly 31 and I still love it. Can you do Tony Banks' "Mama" drum pattern from the Genesis album?
Here the snare sounds extremely good! I've got a sample pack of the LM-1, but I will get a real one if i can. Now the question is: how do I get the snare to sound like this? If you listen to FR David's song "Music" that's the kind of snare I want! And I'm pretty sure he's using the LM-1 on that song! Somebody who can help me? The snare sounds a bit more.. well.. meaty?:p
Sorry for the mess I wrote, but I hope you get what I mean..
@skrikon this is obviously the work of a skilled programmer. :p seriously, the only tonal parameter the LM1 offers other than changing the sample (eprom chip) is pitch control.
As someone who owns both, I can say with certainty that the LM-1 and LM-2 sound quite different. The biggest advantage with the LM-1 is that ALL of the voices are tunable, while only some voices are tunable with the LM-1. To its credit, the LM-2 has the added crash and ride, which the LM-1 lacks. As for the drums that are tunable on both models, the snare in much "fatter" on the LM-1 and "splashy" on the LM-2 when tuned up. Huge difference in the toms, too. The toms on the LM-2 are "bouncy".
This machine sounds brilliant already but it is amazing how producers really transform the sounds produced machines like these. Check out the linn snare sounds on MJ's Thriller
@littler1uk well, we got one from vince clarke (depeche mode, yaz, erasure). we got one that supposedly belonged to the beach boys. we got one that belonged to a very well known 80s session musician that was all over 80s albums. i believe prince, peter gabriel and many others owned these. theres this hot new site called google, you should check it out! ;op
Prince was one of the masters of main stream dance music. I still adore some of his work above most other dance hits. I think Madonna is just as good. I love all the old late 80s dance hits from SNAP, Black Box, Technotronic. But Prince is one of the very best. Cool drum machine, BTW :)
@alainraes Prince's first usage, at least released was Private Joy from Controversy, which is roughly sometime in '81 that that was done before released, maybe earlier. I don't hear the LM-1 on early Numan records. Numan went LM-1 crazy with his Warriors album. Cars was acoustic with all kinds of analog synths and most likely influenced Prince's 1999 for that big dramatic awe-inspiring synth sound style.
@alainraes prince was also influnced by the song"funkytown" by lipps, inc...a minneapolis white group that gave him the kick in the pants 2 persue the music thing. at 1 time he was not so sure it was gonna work but when that song came out "funky town" it gave him inspiration that he can work too
@Dogboy73 Are you stupid? This video is for a promtional use, this video is a demo for an item to sell. When a seller wants to prevent its items from harm, using gloves are one of the best way to keep it clean.
@Dogboy73 I guess he didn't want to risk getting chemical stuff on the hands when desoldering those dried capacitors those old machines so often suffer from.
Id kill you for htose. Im going to kill you for those. K now get a transmitter aned some kick ass speekers. YOu will be bouncing around the room like a robot. You are the next president and all that shit!#
I've seen several people use gloves when working with vintage stuff. is that to protect the instrument?

WOW..just think about it...just about every track on the 1999 album has this sound and just about every song on Purple Rain as well. Unbelievable.

Gary Numan was cool...but Prince made it amazing. He by far made the best and notable drum RIFFS. and continues to do so
mig1188 2 years ago
prince copied the lm1 drumsound style from gary numan (numan used the lm1 before 1999 came out ) numan used the sounds tuned way down on
his 81 album dance, prince also admitted his 1981 single controversy being heavily inspired by Numans 1979 smash cars
