I always disliked people saying certain rendition is better or worse than the original. Ray Charles is great BUT this is simply fantastic. How I miss good melodies, lyrics and singers.... I guess I'm getting old, hahaha
*Richard Manuel hanging (suicide); 1986. He was 42. Manuel was the keyboardist and vocalist for The Band (with bassist Rick Danko, see 1999), who began their career as Bob Dylan's back-up band. The group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. "Up On Cripple Creek," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "This Wheel's On Fire"
@IzzyIsou - sadly, music became just another means to the almighty dollar. Soul and music have been divorced for many years, sad to say, and were it not for YT we'd really be up the creek. If we only had taken a stance and voiced our opinions to the proper people (morons in ivory towers who think they know better). Thanks for posting and enjoy whatever is left available to us. Who knows how much longer this will last.
@IzzyIsou People always say this shit, it's just a stupid thing to say, very arrogant. Even if the only "popular" music yknwo of is from magazines and tv then your haven't been looking good enough, just last night on Conan he had on Dr.Dog. And Rolling Stone has done a bunch of stories on Dawes. There's a lot of sincere music out there, don't be so DUMMMMB
@MusicWriter1965 - Bingo !!!! ...... 8?). Indeed, back when SNL was worth watching and PC did not exists. People had common sense and, most, could tell the difference between insults and humor on the edge, like Richard Pryor, Belushi, Animal House, Blazing Saddles, History of the World - Part I. The good old days !
@Lazairus - I do !!!!!! Same for Joe Cocker's appearance. Hard to believe it went by so fast. Today's shows censors would have suffered sudden heart attacks hearing what back then was perfectly acceptable fun. But returning to the tune one arm up in the air here !!!!! :?)
@brockhickman111 - most like an a low ranking, ordinary specimen of the two legged homo sapient species, one we commonly refer to as an "idiot", "moron", "twit:", "dumb ass", "numb nuts", etc etc ... just a wild guess on my part ... ;-).
fuck off robbie you whore, just leave out your flashy shit for one song. richard should have lead the last waltz, instead of being shoved off in the shadows
@PCFDD - electro was referring to the Last Waltz farewell concert (on DVD) - I think it took place @ the now defunct Fillmore West in San Francisco. They broke-up as Robbie was looking to greener pastures (producing/directing for the most part which is what he did go on to do). During that concert, the spotlight was kinda hogged by Robbie. Even Levon kinda got less time (but them I did not time how much face-time each member got). FWIW. Peace.
@PCFDD - My pleasure .... 8?). My initial reaction was identical as yours, but after re-reading it, I recalled the concert vid at which point he made sense, especially for The Band's diehards as his departure effectively broke up the band, just as R&R was gaining momentum (the Brits feeding off our blues, soul & some country - The Band already reflecting some of that meld/progression - then in turn we fed off the Brits, leading to the irreplaceable R&R created between late 60s to mid 70's. PEACE
thank you so much for the comments....Uncle Richard came to my house for Christmas when I was young (I was only 10 when he died) and sang to me & his other nieces and nephews. I am Richard Manuel's niece & we love him & appreciate all the great comments about his awesomeness because he was unbelievable - thank you for remembering him.
@MrKersey101 - perhaps it may sound a bit dimwitted to, personally & on behalf of his fan-base, reply by thanking you & yours as Richard's family, for the pleasure & comfort his music has offered us over the years, as well as for having served as inspiration to later generations of musicians, thus passing on the baton. Also, my thanks to you for taking the time to share memories of family & personal experiences !!! Future listeners: please thumb-up this post so it can remain #1 & seen by others
richard was such a sweet man ... and he sang so beautifully ...
i met him several times when i was a teenager and the band backed up ronnie hawkins ...beak was unfailingly polite and genuine and always made me feel like
he was interested in what i had to say ... i think that somehow the world always let down this gentle man ...
i saw these guys often in my teens ... when they were ronnie hawkin's band around 1959 or 60 ... usually at the saturday matinees at the concorde tavern on bloor street near christie pits in toronto, or club pavalon in orillia ... although i was just a kid, richard always had time to talk ... a genuinely nice man without pretense or conceit, with a fantastic voice ... we miss you, beak ...
@ecatt333 - i declared my Channel an "idiot & troll free zone" and so far so good... 8?). No flame-ups either! Polite posts to boot, also a rarity. A corner of sanity ..... Thanks for visiting & posting. Now I must retreat behind a big rock w/ my club, waiting for trolls .... :?).
@ecatt333 - sorry to write. On June 2nd, 2011, the wind blew along some cretin who felt compelled to show-off his/her ignorance, and thumb down this treasure. Ohhh well ..... t'was good enough for good ol' Ray Charles to personally call and congratulate Richard, but not for some @#$%^& ordinary Shmo ..... ..... deep sigh
@Gnomitolindo - thank you kindly !!! It would have been more but the idiots keep nuking a bunch, some even with my very own landscape photos. In one instance I uploaded one, and in less than 30 minutes I had a + comment, only to have the vid nuked 12 hours later. .... [deep sigh]..... It was a little known band.
I'm having trouble sending and responding to my YouTube messages. So just wanted to say thanks for sending me Sands of Time again - I heard it a few times before it was taken down, and I tried to respond to your msg. but I don't think it went through. Anyway, it was good while it lasted!
@Soli - Pleasure was all mine. What a shame what those crooks are doing, while failing to recognize the value of free advertising & exposure to whole new generations of potential buyers. The sad irony is that we had zero recourse back when the whores in ivory towers were shafting us w/sub par products due to horrible contracts whereby they were virtually forcing the artists to "mass produce" products just not produced on 9-5 schedules. Often the albums had 1-2 good tunes, rest crap.

He is such a great singer, can't understand why he doesn't get more recognition. Robbie
really screwed his bandmates. Considering Robbie hasn't had a decent record since northern lights tells u something.
